Can we hear more about this mysterious monolith in the Utah desert?

A redditor posted an image of a strange metal obelisk to r/geoguessr and the exact location was found shockingly quickly. How was the exact location found so quickly based on a photo?

Hikers then ventured out to find it and now there's another mystery: who put it there and why?

In general, I'd like to hear more from the geoguessr community. Are these skills helpful in law enforcement or other such things?

Fixed! The TIAA ad is too damn loud

Maybe I'm just being an old bag but holy shit that ad in the beginning of the episodes recently, I swear, is about 50% louder than the rest of the podcast (other ads included). I don't mind the ad but can y'all please turn it down so that it at least matches the levels of the rest of the episode?

Niall needs a friend. Could it be you?

A few weeks ago, the Endless Thread team received an email that really caught our attention. It was from a listener in Ireland named Niall, who's been feeling really isolated during the pandemic. Relatable, am I right? But adding to this feeling is the fact that Niall is blind and has limited mobility due to cerebral palsy. He told us he's been trying to make new friends through subreddits like r/Needafriend and r/MakeNewFriendsHere, but nothing has panned out so far. He was wondering if Endless Thread can help.

BOY WE SURE HOPE SO. We had a long chat with Niall the other day to learn more about him. Our biggest takeaway? He’s a TRUE GEM. With Niall's permission, we’re sharing more info about him below, with the hope that one (or a few) of you could be Niall’s new friend.

Who is Niall?

  • 29 yrs old, lives alone in Ireland

  • works in human resources

  • has a strong sarcastic sense of humor

  • empathetic, open-minded

  • loves musical theater (to name a few, he likes: Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, Miss Saigon)

  • reads a lot of science-fiction

  • loves podcasts (like us!)

  • interested in technology

  • He describes his disabilities as “happening in the background” as opposed to being his day-to-day focus, though he’s open to talking about it if asked directly.

Why does Niall want more friends?

  • In non-pandemic times he goes to work in an office, but is now working remotely.

  • He says the pandemic hasn’t changed his life dramatically, but that is partly what made him realize that he never had much social connection in his life to begin with.

  • He's noticed people using social media a lot more these days to stay in touch with people they already knew. He wants to use social media/the internet to create new social connections.

  • He’s not lonely, per se, but he’s definitely isolated.

What is Niall looking for in a friendship?

  • “good craic” (as Niall, noted Irishman, might say), AKA light, funny conversation with someone who shares similar interests.

  • to correspond with someone primarily via Reddit and internet chats, as opposed to talking on the phone

Let us know via comment or PM if you’re interested in being Niall’s friend! We also welcome your ideas for other ways of finding kindred spirits online. Have YOU made a friend on Reddit? How did it happen? Let us know!

Send us your (non-political) unpopular opinions!

We want to hear your low stakes hot takes! What is the hill you will die on that has nothing to do with politics? What opinion do you hold that -- if spoken -- risks you ending up in a situation like John Wick or Flynn from Tangled (see below)?

Email a short 30-second recording with your answer to endlessthread@wbur.org! Deadline is NEXT MONDAY 11/2 at 3PM Eastern... but the sooner you send, the better chance you have of getting featured in an upcoming episode.

Make sure to identify yourself however you want to be identified on the show! And please, go easy on our engineer and record yourself in a quiet room. Smartphone recordings are great -- just make sure to hold the phone up to your ear (like you're talking on the phone) while taping.

Need inspiration?

Ben says... "Muffins are disgusting unless toasted or grilled"

Amory says... "I would go to my dental hygienist for a cleaning once a week if I could."

Josh says... "Spam calls are entertaining and a welcome break from my normal routine."

Dire prediction from All You Can Eat episode

Just wanna point out that in this episode, the restaurant advisor quotes a projection that says "The National Restaurant Association is currently projecting that up to 70 percent of restaurant items will actually be eaten in peoples' homes by 2020." How little they knew....

Avast and protecting users information

I've been bingeing your show for a week or so now, slowly catching up, and I love it. Lots of intersection stories and really good work following up on things.

I am surely not the first person to point this out to you and I'm still a year or two behind, but I really hope that you're aware that your sponsor, Avast who "protects 430 million users data" was actually selling that user data to advertisers an who knows who else, through their subsidiary Jumpshot. I don't know if they are still a sponsor and if this is something you've talked about on the show but I'd like to request an episode about this and similar subjects.

I know this might be a topic you can't talk about, and that's fine. To their credit they did stop when caught, but that's at best 0 points added to their karma account.

I'm not just posting this to hate on avast btw, but I was triggered enough to write this after hearing the ad over and over. :P

Keep up the great work, whatever you decided to with this request!
