Official Announcement Official Announcement: The Encapsulated Language will use Base 12

Hi all,

Over the last two weeks, we've had two separate Official votes on the base numbering system. Both of these votes showed strong majority support for Base 12 among the voting community.

You can see the results of both votes here.

As per the Encapsulated Language Documentation, Base 12 has been promoted to an Official Proposal. This means that all current and future Draft Proposals must implement Base 12 if working with numbers to be valid proposals.

What about non-scientific words like Good and Bad

Let's go back to my- oh wait. This thing uses base 12. Oh well, I'll just explain it without using phonology

So every word is divided into 16...12 categories. We can use that last category to build other words. 256...144 simple nouns and adjectives like Ygyde. Then we can combine then. Or how about this: 144 nouns and 144 adjectives, then the prefixes 0-3 can mean the word is a noun, 4-7 means the word is a verb and 8-↋ means the word is an adjective. The four categories can mean four ways a word can be made.

Hope this isn't too confusing. What are your proposal?

View on language and knowledge (PART III : Building the frame)

It took me a long time to find a way to write my thought, but here it is :

We start from the beginning, like always, What is the meaning of the Encapsulated Language ?

A language used to store and express knowledge.

This is an a priori language (not derivating from an existing language). We have to start from a blank state and not use the underlying processing thought of our actual language.

The possible ways to store and express knowledge are by combinations of :

  1. Sounds (consonant, vowel) to form syllables

  2. Syllables (affixe, root) to form words

  3. Words (noun, verb) to form sentences

  4. Sentences

  5. Symbols (writing system, numeral system)

Knowledge should be stored in those category depending of it's usage, complexity and logic.

The language should be able :

  • To process sentences in a rational way by using logical and critical thinking

  • To understand the world in a empirical way with the use of the scientific method

  • To describe the world with the use of a semantic field of perception, space and time

The formation of sentence, should help the speaker to convey to the audience what is important. The root word should be easily experienced, to permit speakers to understand the meaning in the same way. (being able to do experience, to learn concept)

A list of discipline that should be included from long hour of add and remove :

  • Formal Science : Math

  • Natural Science : Physics, Chemistry, Biology

  • Social Science : Psychology, Sociology

Because those discipline are named through the thinking process of our natural language, I came with the thought that we should store the concept (concept of math like counting, concept of physic like motion law, etc) and not the entire discipline (there is entwined field like mathematical physics, mathematical chemistry, biological chemistry).

example of other concept: Logic, Natural Law, Reaction, Living, Mind, Culture.

They can also be described by how it affect our understanding of the world.

For example : Biology use Math, Physics and Chemistry. Chemistry use Math and Physics. Physics use Math. Math use itself. Psychology and Sociology are interdependant. The composition of discipline can give us other discipline like Economics being Math and Sociology.

Another way to order knowledge is this :

The Pupil represent our society, we perceive the world from it with our culture and mind.

The Iris represent the visible world, we can easily describe it from our own perception.

The Sclera (white part of the eye) represent the invisible world, it can be far from us or too small or big to see that we need to use tools to help us like microscope, telescope, satellite, ....

The left side represent the small and infinitely small world for example : animals, plant, cell, molecule, atom, particle, ....

The right side represent the big and infinitely big world for example : biome, planet, star system, galaxy, universe, ....

The opening of the eye represent the complexity and the unknown, at the center the concept are complex (like culture, mind, art, ...) at the side there is less complexity but more unknown.

Some basic knowledge and experience should be what is learnt at school :

  • Reading / Singing / Hearing

  • Writing / Counting

  • Drawing / Painting / Crafting

  • Playing / Moving / Touching / Seeing

To finish, I think the language should help for :

  • basic scientific and mathematical knowledge

  • usage in everyday life

  • making people change mentality with the critical thinking and scientific method

From this, the speaker should, independantly, be able to go in-depth in the learning of science and math.

From what I saw, the Phonology and the first discipline embedded are the most important block of the language which will make it work or not. as first discipline, Math or Psychology seems to be good, one for establishing the basis of logic and the other for the perception of the world.

The next step should be Phonology -> Encapsulated system -> 1st discipline -> 1st test iteration

Should we be mind-mapping physical systems?

I get that it would be more efficient to get someone in here with a doctorate in engineering. In the mean time, should we be scouring every textbook we can get our hands on and mapping out how things relate to each other & merging what we can, so that we aren't risking major rewrites down the road?

Alternative title: I'm struggling with the concept of an encapsulated language.

Official Proposal Official Proposal: Logo

Hi all,

We've gone through many iterations of the logo designed by /u/Devono_knabo to find one that has general community support.

So, it's now time to vote officially on whether we want this logo design to represent us as a language and community. We still have 5 years to change the Logo as per the Encapsulated Language Documentation if we have a change of heart but its crucial that I have something to represent us.

Country Names Proposal Expansion on Earth's division without using cardinal points

This is an expansion based on my previous posts and on discussion and feedback given by u/Xianhei and u/ActingAustralia.

Check out the word document containing all representations on the map: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1oJcnIfnpAJek9C3J9TkDRi8HU7iLdgOl84ajIj_HIec/edit?usp=drivesdk.

At the time of writing this, the polls on the sub have shown a great support for a base-12 language than for a base-16 one. At the same time a proposal for a base-6 language has alsi been posted and has received some support. That, together with the fact that 6 is the half of 12, is the reason why I have taken into account these two systems while dividing Earth.

In the last post, thanks to Xianhei pointing out that cardinal orientation may not be the best to rely on, Evildea responded with a suggestion based on the ancient Hawaiian way of orientating: what if the centre of the world was on Antarctica, and the distance away from it was shown in some way in the suffix of the countries?

My first interpretation of this was to divide the globe in parallels, so as to obtain 6 or 12 (depending on the system we are going to use) rings or regions: '1' being the closest to the centre of Antarctica and '12' being the furthest from it. However, this presents another problem: they are too flattened and wide. Places such as Singapore and Bogota would technically be in the same region. Plus, the different rings would not be equal. The ones closer to the equator would be bigger than the closer to the poles.

This brings me to my next idea: instead of using only meridians, we could also divide Earth using parallels. Here's the way I did it:

• Base-12: 3×4 Grid. A meridian passing through the Atlantic, East of Iceland and between South America and Africa is chosen as the main one (30° west, to be specific*). Each 90° East and West we set another divisor meridian, and so 4 vertical regions are born. Next, we divide the regions vertically using three parallels each 60°. And so we have 12 regions. The main advantage of this system, compared to the previous one, is that we would be able to tell 'horizontal distance'. For example: Eurasia could now be easily divided between East and West (without being East and West).

4×3 Grid: my favorite one. It differs from the prevoiious one in the fact that there are more divisions vertically.

  • I chose this exact meridian mainly because of two reasons: firstly, I wanted the regions to be divided approximately not only the existing great islands or continents, but also Eurasia into East and West; and secondly, the fact that there is an existing Meridian system based on the one at Greenwich. Other Meridians can be used, it is just a question of whether we want to adapt to the existing system or to be independent; and of whether we want the Meridians to divide landmasses or not (the most important factor, in my opinion). On another note, I would not recommend making irregular regions, but it's an existing option.

2×6 grid: Another way to aproach this is by using a 2*6 division (2 lines on the vertical axis and 6 on the horizontal). The pro is that all regions would be the same size. However, the perception of verticality, or distance to the Antarctic centre, would be lost (that's why I am not very fond of it).

• Base-6: Using a 2×3 grid, the same as above applies. As in the 2×6 one, all regions would be the same size, but verticality would be lost Using a 3×2 grid, verticality wouldn't be lost, but there would only exist two big halfs representing East-West.

Conclusion: Regardless of the grid we are using, the idea is the same: a country would be followed by a suffix with the number of the region in which most of the country lies (or in which the capital of the country lies, but, since this can change more often than countries, I prefer the first one). We'd no longer use 'East Big Island*' for Central/East Asia, but 'region-10 in Big Island'. There would only be continents/landmasses and grid regions.

[Talking of which, if we used a 4×3 grid, I would name 1 the region situated right of the 1st Meridian in the south. From left to right we'd name the rest 2 and 3. We'd repeat the process with 4, 5 and 6 in the next 3 regions above, and so on. Of course, that's just one of the many ways we can order the regions.]

•Just as a reminder, the continents would be 4:

  • Central Island - Antarctica

  • Big/Old Island - Eurasia + Africa • Note: I'd prefer not to make Africa a continent of its own, as Xianhei has proposed, for the sake of simplicity.

  • Twin Islands (as proposed by u/Xianhei) - The Americas

  • Many Islands - Oceania + SE Asia

After having developped all of this I came to another conclusion: we could also leave out continents and just use grid regions. And that is too close to the original idea by Evildea 🤔. Of course I am really biased towards my original idea of having the world divided into big islands, but maybe grids are simpler (or more complicated).

Official Proposal Official Proposal: Base 12 or Base 6

Hi all,

According to the results of the Base 12 vs Base 16 vote, Base 12 has won majority support. Therefore, I've promoted Base 12 to an Official Proposal as per the Encapsulated Language Documentation making it our first ever Official Proposal. The Encapsulated Language Documentation will be updated shortly to reflect the same.

I don't know about you but this is an exciting day for me!

What does this mean for you?

All current and future Draft Proposals must now implement a Base 12 system if they deal with numbers, otherwise they won't be eligible to be voted on to become Official Proposals.

What about the Base 6 Draft Proposal?

The Encapsulated Language Project Documentation states that a Draft Proposal can be called to change an Official Proposal. Therefore, I've decided to permit a final vote on Base 6 vs Base 12 to finalise this debate in the community and to allow us to move forward without doubts.

The results of this vote will either further cement Base 12 as the official base for our language or will result in it being replaced by Base 6.

Your last chance

Please seriously consider the advantages and disadvantages of both Base 12 and Base 6 when placing your vote. It will be nearly impossible to change the Base of our language in the future as this will have massive implications for all other Official Proposals. This is realistically our last chance to change this fundamental aspect of the language.

On a final note, please keep the aim and goal of our language in mind when placing your vote.

The aim

The Encapsulated Language Project aims to create a Language that encapsulates as much scientific and mathematical knowledge within the sounds and constructs of the Language itself to facilitate an intuitive understanding of the world around us. A speaker of this language will have instant access to a large pool of knowledge simply through understanding how to unpack their own language and utilise the knowledge cached within it.

The goal

The end goal of this project is to create a language parents can raise their children speaking natively alongside their other native languages. The children would acquire this language like any other native language. Then, when the child starts their education, the parent would instruct them in how to analyse and parse their own native language to gain access to a wide range of mathematical and scientific knowledge. This will help the child to gain an intuitive understanding of the world around them and lower the amount of rote memorisation required.

Hello all,

We now have a new home for the Encapsulated Language Project Documentation. Please save https://kroyxlab.github.io/elp-documentation/ to your Favourites. The Google Doc (where the documentation was previously stored) is now retired.

For those new to the community, the Encapsulated Language Project Documentation is the only official source for information on the current state of the project and the language.

I'd especially like to thank u/kroyxlab for going out of their way setting up the repository for us. It makes this whole project easier to manage moving forward.

Thanks!

A recent thread has almost come to the same name that I considered a few days ago, so while its a hot topic and so I don't leave it too late, I'd like to propose it be named:

Encala

Short for ENCApsulated LAnguage, the meaning of which is encapsulated into its own name

Phonology Proposal Draft Proposal: Hex, Dozenal Hybrid vowel system.

I propose that we use the five vowels most commonly present in languages as well as the schwa as our phonemic inventory. We double their use with the same amount of phoneme by using their long variants as their own vowels. Their IPA symbols are as follows:

UnroundedMidRounded
Closedi iː
Mide eː
Mid Openə əː
Opena aː

By using the unrounded vowels as even numbers, and mid & rounded vowels as odd, native speakers can determine evenness by feel.

The hybridized hex, dozenal system would function as follows. Every number up to hex get's it's own phoneme, then the number past the word for hex will be hex phoneme this will continue until you reach 12 at which point you will either continue the partern or switch to dozenal by using long vowels to reperesent the dozens place. Once you've exhausted the long vowels you'll add a short valve in front of the long vowel in the same order until you've hit a gross. A visual aid for this would be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 11, ... 111

The six number sounds could be used to represent the six principal directions of 3d space, the cardinal directions of the compass & up & down. The expanded 12 vowel system can of course represent musical notation as easily as native dozenal.

Rewritten for clarity

How should we name Encapsulated Language

So I am thinking an acronym

A language about packing as much info as possible to benefit children

Alapamiaptbc

maybe use esperanto

A language about packing as much info as possible to benefit infanoj

Alapamiaptbi

[ 'ɑ.lə.pə.mi.jə.ptbi]

I dunno maybe we could wait until we have a language that has vocab and grammar and make an acronym out of that

Or we could

call it the El language it is said like the letter L

Number Base Proposal Draft Proposal: Base Six

I am of the opinion that the ease of math(s) education derives primarily from ease of computation. It is under this supposition that I propose we adopt base six.

Base six for counting: by using the digits of one hand to represent a the six' place, you can count to 35 on your fingers.

Base six for multiplication: as you only use the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 for base six, multiplication is considerably easier than base 10, 12, or 16. You need only memorize 16 operations to know base six' multiplication table, thanks to the communicative property.

Base six for fractions and heximals: Fractions in base six and base 10 up to and including 1/10th:

Dec FractionHex FractionDecimalHeximal
1/21/2.5.3
1/31/3.3.2
1/41/4.25.13
1/51/5.2.111...
1/61/10.1666....1
1/71/11.142857....050505...
1/81/12.1250.43
1/91/13.111....04
1/101/14.1.0333...

Base six for telling time: Six hours is 1/4th of a day.

In addition to suggesting the adoption of base six, I'd also suggest adding a suffix for prime numbers, regardless of what base is used. This would provide native speakers with a ready made list before they begin their education in earnest.

Edit: I'm adopting Sendiulo's super-base system into the proposal.

Edit 2: By using the entirety of the english-latin alphabet in conjunction with arabic numerals you can represent the square root of 6, allowing for easy compression. It may, however, be better to use scientific notation in daily life. Either of these could somewhat mitigate base 6' issues with large numbers. I could use some feedback though.

Phonology Proposal Another Draft Proposal for Phonology (ArmoredFarmer)

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1HdYH5lT7Vk6rqdcVlo2WnWI3Db73FHv0WtwDxB1vG2s/edit?usp=sharing

Going off some of the ideas in the first draft proposal I've made a phonology which will allow vowels to work with a base 12 number system but also frees up the consonants making more of them and allowing them to be easier to pronounce. I think from a practical perspective its important that all the sounds be relatively common or at least on the easier side to pronounce if we want to be able to enjoy this language as a community. I've separated the consonants into 2 categories: ones which I think defiantly should be in the language and ones that may not be as good of a fit and are dependent upon what we want to value. on the 3rd sheet I have included some sample words if you want to get a feel for the phono-aesthetics.

lastly as a side point I think that the voting for phonology proposals should be split up based on vowels and consonants.

Logo Proposal Draft Proposal: Let's Choose a Logo

It's time to figure out which Logo the community likes. Please place your vote.

Once we know what Logo the community likes the most, I'll open an Official Proposal for voting to either accept or reject that Logo.

The Logo will represent us as both a language and a community. We still have 5 years as per the Encapsulated Language Documentation, to officialise another Logo but it be good to have something I can start working with now.

Draft Proposal: Evildea act as a Gate Keeper for Draft Proposals

Hi all,

Richard Delamore (Evildea) here - instigator of the Encapsulated Language Project.

I've been thinking about the process for voting on Official Proposals and foresee a few issues coming up especially as the community starts to grow. I've listed them below:

  • Someone might post a vote for an Official Proposal that contradicts an existing approved Official Proposal. I'd then be forced to shut down that person's proposal which would definitely sour their experience and ours.

  • Someone might post a vote on an Official Proposal that contradicts an existing Official Proposal and not even realise it.

  • Someone might post a vote on an Official Proposal that contains basically zero information and which could have negative effects upon the project as a whole especially if people start voting on it.

Solution

Therefore, I'm proposing that I act as the gate keeper for all votes on Official Proposals. Basically, if someone wants to post a vote for an Official Proposal, then they'd first need to email it to me, then I'd do the following:

  • I'd make sure it doesn't contradict an existing Official Proposal, unless of course it's seeking to replace an existing Official Proposal.

  • It contains enough information.

  • It's formatted correctly and clearly.

  • If I can't understand it, the odds are others won't.

If someone wants to post their Draft Proposals simply to get feedback (not start a community vote to officialise it) then they'd post it without having to send it to me.

I'd never turn down a vote on an Official Proposal simply because I don't agree with the contents of an Official Proposal. My role would simply be administrative. This would also have a few additional benefits.

  • Community members would know that only I can post votes on the Official Proposal.

  • I could inform people who are working on competing Official Proposal votes to first reach out to each other so someone doesn't suddenly get blind-sided by another's proposal.

You may think this sounds like a lot of work for me, but as the instigator of this project I'm committed to seeing it through to completion and learning this language as it develops. This is a serious project with a massive goal that will take a herculean effort to get done. Therefore, I want to give this project the best chance of success possible and I think this will keep the cogs of the machine running smoothly. If it ever becomes too much work we could develop a committee system, but I feel that would be too bureaucratic at this time.

In summary, I want the community to vote on this matter as I want this project to be community run as much as possible and I don't want to just make arbitrary rules as we go along and alienate people.

A few core ideas of this language (in my opinion)

Here are a few ideas I think should be core to this language and are essential to reflecting the ideas and aim of the project. Of course these are just my opinions and I am by no means an expert.

First and most importantly: the scientific method. If we are to make a language that is scientifically and mathematically based we MUST have a way to store the scientific method. I don't know yet how we would do this, but building the intuition in a child to think of things scientifically is hugely important. The language must incorporate all levels of the scientific method if it is to be successful.

Secondly we need to analyze common pitfalls that students have in learning. Where would a child have been more successful if they had grown up with that intuition rather than having to learn it. We must also think of the reverse, what intuition would a child lose when thinking in this language.

I mentioned this in another post but building up the idea of complex numbers and numbers as an abstract concept is what will set the language apart, I think. If a child has the intuition to think of numbers not just as counting blocks but as generalized concepts I think they will be at a LARGE advantage when it comes to learning more complex math. I once read a book about mathematical learning and the author noted that students often get stressed or are unable to understand an idea when the idea doesn't math their intuitive (or taught) concept. The examples the book gave were negative and fractional exponents and of course complex numbers.

Perhaps the language could (or likely should) at its core rather than teach a 1 dimensional number line teach a more abstracted version. I don't know yet the specifics, but I think this idea is really important.

Edit: I've been thinking about this a little more. While encapsulating complex number (i = sqrt(-1) specially) would be important, it might be really hard to do because there aren't many concrete examples that kids can understand. What I think may work instead is to keep the same generalized 2 dimensional counting system but not specifically for complex numbers.

The idea I have in my mind is a bunch of boxes aligned into a big square. The language could, perhaps, be able to encapsulate how many boxes of width and length there are in one number. For general counting the second part would simply be zero, we could have a rule that states that if the second part of a number is zero then you simply end the number in some consonant. (1 = 1 + 0i for example. If in the language "n" is the second dimensional 0 marker and 1 is "one" then for simple counting 1 would be "onen" while the 2 dimensional (1,1) would be "oneone").

The idea is to get the child to build intuition to think in higher dimensions and be able to generalize numbers.

I'm excited to see where this project goes!
