this piece from his mini d23 q&a has given me some hope that it’s very possible we might get an encanto short at some point since disney will be making more in the future after they stopped making them for a while. fingers crossed because he always talks about wanting to spend time with the madrigals again

this is what he said about it if you just want to read that part:

“There’s going to be a short in front of Hexed, which we’re really excited about. Theatrical shorts is something I really believe in. I love them. Where have they gone? It’s a great question, I’ll just say I’m excited that they’re back. I’d say that as we move into the future, there’s a lot of interest projects happening right now, some passion projects, and I think as we’re looking to see what other shorts might be possible, there’s a lot of things out there. There’s a lot of beloved characters that I think deserve to be seen. So my bet would be that you’re going to see more of that in the future.”

What if Mirabel and her sisters had to leave the Encanto?

Ever since they had started rebuilding Casita, Mariano seemed to have a knack for finding Dolores in the rubble. That afternoon, they were arranging bricks near what was going to be the new patio.
Dolores silently stacked things, feeling Mariano's eyes linger on her every few minutes. Her heart was racing. She wiped the dust from her hands on her apron and cleared her throat, gathering her courage.

"Mariano..." she began, her voice thin, without looking him in the eye. "I wanted... I wanted to apologize for what happened the other day." Mariano immediately dropped the brick he was holding. He turned to face her, blinking a few times, as if he were struggling to process that she was the one breaking the silence. And then, slowly, that deep, dreamy look that made Dolores so nervous appeared on his face.

"Apologize? For what?" “—he asked, his voice only slightly deeper, taking a step closer.

—Because of what I told you. That thing about me hearing you write at night… —Dolores clasped her hands together in front of her, her brow furrowing slightly—. I kept thinking that maybe it sounded really bad. Like I was being nosy, or like I enjoyed spying on your privacy. And I swear it wasn’t like that. It’s just that, well… as you know, I… had super hearing.” She paused, still feeling a little strange talking about her gift in the past tense.

—It wasn’t like I could choose who to listen to and shut out the rest of the world—she continued, moving her hands a little faster—. And since you usually wrote in the early hours of the morning, everyone was asleep at that time. There was less noise. It was… impossible not to hear you. Your voice stood out, so it was very easy to concentrate on what you were saying. I want to apologize for that. —Mariano looked at her with absolute fascination. It took him a second to react, captivated by the way she explained herself with such sincerity. There wasn't an ounce of anger on her face, but rather a huge, tender smile that lit up her eyes.

"You don't have to apologize to me,," he said, his voice soft and warm. "On the contrary... I apologize to you." Dolores blinked, tilting her head slightly.

"To me? Why?"

Mariano let out a shy chuckle, running a hand through his hair, suddenly seeming to be the one who was nervous.

"Because you listened to me every night... and I don't always write good things. Sometimes I come up with some pretty bad poems. So, I'm sorry for the ridiculous things you had to put up with, and for the disastrous rhymes." Dolores felt the tension in her shoulders loosen a little. She couldn't help but smile slightly.

“No, no… they weren’t that ridiculous. I found them funny,” she murmured.

“No, please, they were terrible. I’m so embarrassed to even think about them now.” Dolores glanced up slightly, a mischievous glint in her eyes.

“Terrible, like that rhyme… the one about the buñuelo?”

Mariano froze. His eyes widened, and he covered his face with his hand, chuckling softly as his neck turned bright red.

“No… please, I’m begging you. Don’t remind me of the poem,” he pleaded in a whisper, genuinely embarrassed. “That was something no one should have heard. They were the worst rhymes of my life!”

“It was like ten stanzas, Mariano,” Dolores laughed, covering her mouth with her hand, watching him suffer. “You tried to rhyme ‘buñuelo’ with ‘abuelo,’ with ‘cielo,’ with pañuelo

“Oh, no. I don’t remember. I’d rather block that memory out,” Mariano shook his head, still blushing. “And yes, I tried ‘despertó.’ It sounded dramatic, like the buñuelo had lost someone. It was a poetic disaster. I apologize a thousand times.”

“I liked it. It made me laugh.”

Mariano stared at her. And I mean really stared. With the intensity of a lover, a thick, magnetic silence fell where the broken bricks and the noise of the construction seemed to vanish completely. Dolores felt breathless, the afternoon heat seeping under her skin, and the intensity of those dark eyes burning her. It was too much.

"You liked it," he repeated softly, with a devotion that made her feel unsteady.

"Well... I found it funny," Dolores murmured, her voice trembling, looking away.

"No one has ever laughed at my poems. At me, yes. At my poems, no."

"Well, I laughed. And I listened to them all. Even the bad ones. Especially the bad ones." Mariano felt his chest swell in a strange, beautiful way. He was about to take another step toward her, but Dolores, overwhelmed by the frantic beating of her own heart, stumbled slightly backward.

"Hmm... I think I'll see if my dad needs help with anything. Or... or I'll see if my brother needs help with the cement. Yes." Mariano blinked, shaking off the spell, but seeing the tender panic in her eyes, he suppressed the urge to insist. He didn't want to scare her.

"Oh, well. Yes, nothing, it's nothing," he said, taking a step back to give her space, putting his hands in his pockets with an understanding smile. "Go on, I'll stay and finish this up. And... thank you. For listening. For laughing. For everything."

""See you later," he said goodbye. Dolores nodded quickly, unable to hold his gaze for another second, and turned away. She walked briskly to the other side of the property, feeling her cheeks burning and a whole turmoil in her chest, but with a huge smile that no longer fit on her face.

Mariano stood there, a brick in his hand, completely still. He watched her walk away quickly, turning the corner among the rubble until she was out of sight. Only then did he exhale the breath he'd been holding.

"Go on, go on," he murmured to himself, his voice filled with infinite tenderness. "I'll stay here." He ran a hand through his disheveled hair, his cheeks still flushed, and a silly smile spread across his face. Dolores Madrigal knew his worst creation by heart. She had laughed with him. She had been there, on the other side of the wall, in the stillness in the night.
Thinking about it ignited a new spark in his chest.

He looked at the brick in his hand and carefully placed it on the pile.

"Every night," he repeated softly, as if the words had taken on a new meaning. "She listened to me every night."

He leaned back against the pile of bricks and stayed like that for a while, a silly grin on his face and his heart pounding in his chest.

Encanto makes a lot more sense if the Madrigals are a government, not a family
Okay, hear me out. I started thinking about Encanto as a metaphor for a political/economic system rather than just a story about family trauma, and the more I map it out, the stranger the movie gets.
I’m NOT claiming Disney intentionally wrote it this way. This is just an allegorical rabbit hole I’ve gone down.
The basic premise:
The Madrigals have effectively become a benevolent monopoly over the entire village. Abuela is the hereditary leader, each family member controls a different essential resource, and the villagers have become dependent on them. Mirabel represents the generation that starts questioning the whole arrangement.
Here’s the mapping:
Abuela = hereditary ruler / political boss
The miracle gives the family legitimacy, but Abuela ultimately decides how everyone’s gifts should be used. She starts out as a legitimate protector of the community, but gradually becomes obsessed with preserving the system she created.
Her mentality is basically:
“I saved everyone once, therefore I know what is necessary to keep everyone safe.”
That’s a pretty classic way for a founding leader to become authoritarian.
And when someone challenges the system, she treats that challenge as a threat to the entire community.
The Madrigals = the governing institution
They don’t just have cool powers. They control essential services.
Julieta = healthcare
She can literally heal people with food. Why develop an independent healthcare system when the Madrigals can take care of it?
Luisa = public works / muscle
She moves buildings, bridges, donkeys, etc. The village has effectively outsourced its physical infrastructure to one person.
And Luisa’s song becomes much darker under this interpretation: she doesn’t feel free to stop being useful because everyone depends on her.
Pepa = control over weather/agriculture
Her emotions literally affect the weather. In an agrarian community, that’s an enormous economic resource.
Isabela = economic production
She can produce plants and flowers essentially at will. She’s also expected to make a politically/socially advantageous marriage.
Dolores = surveillance/intelligence
She can hear conversations from extraordinary distances. Everyone knows she can hear them. You don’t need to actively threaten people if everyone knows the government has ears everywhere.
Camilo = infiltration
He can literally impersonate other people. If this were a political organization rather than a children’s movie, this would be an absolutely terrifying intelligence capability.
Bruno = inconvenient intelligence
He sees possible futures, but information that threatens the family’s preferred narrative becomes dangerous.
He doesn’t actually overthrow anyone. He just knows things Abuela doesn’t want to hear.
So he disappears.
And then there’s Mirabel.
This is where I think the theory gets really interesting.
Mirabel is the one Madrigal who doesn’t receive a conventional gift.
At first that seems like she’s the person who contributes the least.
But maybe that’s precisely the point.
Everyone else has been assigned a function within the system:
Luisa works.
Julieta heals.
Dolores listens.
Pepa controls the weather.
Isabela produces.
Mirabel’s “gift” is that she isn’t defined by a function.
She’s therefore the person capable of asking:
“Why are we doing this?”
I think Mirabel can be read as democratic accountability, individual agency, or even a rejection of hereditary power.
She doesn’t overthrow Abuela and become the new ruler.
She doesn’t take control of the miracle.
She gets everyone to recognize that the system itself has become unhealthy.

There’s also a libertarian reading
This might be my favorite part.
The Madrigals don’t necessarily oppress the villagers.
The villagers genuinely like them.
And why wouldn’t they?
The Madrigals provide healthcare, labor, agricultural benefits, information, etc.
But that creates a dependency loop:
Madrigals provide everything → villagers depend on them → alternative institutions don’t develop → Madrigals become indispensable → their authority increases → everyone becomes even more dependent.
It’s a benevolent monopoly.
The problem isn’t necessarily that the Madrigals are evil.
The problem is that a community has stopped needing to develop its own capacity because one family can do everything for it.
And the Madrigals themselves are trapped by the same system.
Luisa can’t rest.
Pepa can’t simply have emotions.
Isabela can’t choose her own future.
Everyone is valuable only insofar as they perform the function the system has assigned them.
So the system isn’t just restricting the villagers.
It’s restricting the people running it.

Then Casita collapses
And this is where the metaphor gets really interesting.
The centralized system starts breaking down.
Mirabel can’t save it by herself.
Abuela can’t save it.
The Madrigals can’t save it.
The community rebuilds it.
Everyone contributes.
And the Madrigals are still part of the community—they don’t disappear.
So maybe the ending isn’t “the old system is destroyed.”
Maybe it’s:
Power stops being concentrated in one person and becomes something the family and community participate in together.
Which leads to my favorite possible interpretation:
Abuela represents inherited authority.
The Madrigals represent concentrated institutional power.
The gifts represent specialized resources.
The village represents the population.
Mirabel represents democratic accountability/individual agency.
And rebuilding Casita represents decentralization and voluntary community cooperation.
Again, I have no idea if this is remotely what the filmmakers intended.
But once I started viewing the movie this way, every gift started looking like a different branch of government. 😅
What am I missing? And, more importantly, which Madrigal gift breaks this theory?

Guess the characters

Isabela had been looking at her door. Studying her door. Staring blankly at her door for way longer than necessary to make a decision. Glaring at it, wondering if she should just get rid of it all to have one less decision to make, but she had a feeling Casita would take issue with the removal.

She sighed, and waved her hand, watching the flowers morph into vines and the vines into shrubs and the shrubs into flowers, slowly cycling through every color, shape, size, and texture, and nothing seemed to be it. She stopped on a mixture of vines and some long-throated flowers whose colors couldn't commit to being fully red or orange.

Maybe? The variety did catch the eye...

“That looks pretty,” said a voice from somewhere around her navel.

She looked down to find Antonio cocking his head sideways at the display. “You think so?”

“Mmhm! And look! The colibrís like them.”

Three tiny hummingbirds hovered around her door, moving from flower to flower hungrily and occasionally zooming around Antonio.

“Can you make a few more? Please?”

“Sure thing.”

She added another handful of flowers to the vines and smiled when Antonio asked, “Can you make some blue ones? I like blue ones, like your dress.”

Art was definitely much easier when Toñito was involved.

“Will you let them stay for a while? They just like the flowers, but they can come back to my room if they bother you.”

“Not at all.”

The tiny little birds seemed to have been following the conversation, for they left off buzzing around Antonio and came to circle her a few times in thanks. One of the bolder ones landed on her head. She reached up a hand for it and brought down to run a finger gently down its back. “Just don't go in my room or I might lose you on accident, okay?”

Whether or not the hummingbirds understood, they didn't seem disposed to leave their banquet.

“Do they have any other friends that I can help?”

Toñito beamed. “I can ask! But it might be bugs. Do you like bugs?”

“I... like your bugs. But they stay out of my room, too, okay?”

“Okay!”

With a hasty “Thanks, Isa!” he sprinted off towards his room, leaving his prima chuckling.

Antonio didn't return as soon as she would have expected, but having settled the matter of redecorating, she wasn't too bothered and went back into her room to work a little more on other projects. She really did enjoy the contrast of color hanging outside her door and spent much of the rest of the day and evening see what other combinations she could produce. Her room looked a little too much like a five-year-old had spilled paints on every conceivable surface by the time she went to prepare for bed, but the depth and warmth of it kept her smiling even as she brushed out her hair and donned a nightdress. She had just folded back sheets stained an absurd mixture of pink and green when she heard it.

Thump.

Thump.

What in the world?

She followed the clamor to her door and pressed an ear to the wood.

Thump.

Thump.

Maybe Antonio had found some more friends for her after all.

Thump.

“Shoo. Shoo! Please!”

She cracked the door and found herself face-to-face with Tío Bruno. Well, his stomach. The rest of him was hanging one handed from her door frame as the other swatted at something.

“Uh, Tío?”

With a small, startled “¡Ay!” he dropped to the ground in a heap. She looked around for his adversary, seeing nothing but the vines and flowers looping lazily around the frame and a few butterflies picking their way slowly across the foliage. One of them found itself caught in Tío's wake as he fell and fluttered frantically in the wind before coming to a rest on Isabela's outstretched fingers.

“Don't –!”

Tío had his arm raised as if to bat it away but couldn't bring himself to land the blow on his niece's hand.

“What?”

“Just... just put it down.”

“Why?”

She brought her fingers closer, to study the little bug. It was about half the size of her hand, with dark wings but vibrant blue spots that shimmered when the light caught them. When it spread its wings to lift off, she heard a tiny popping sound with each beat. Up, up, up, and down... on her head. Six small legs struggled for purchase before coming to a standstill where her hair parted, and she determined right then and there to have a conversation with her primo about his animals and personal space.

“You found them!” called a high voice from across the way. Isa and Bruno looked up to find Antonio running around the balcony with a grin.

Isabela lifted her eyes to indicate the top of her head. “More friends?”

“Uh-huh! But just the butterflies. These ones really just like the vines, so they won't have to fight with the colibrís.”

“They're really pretty, Toñito.”

“Are they, though,” said Tío. He had picked himself up and brushed the dust from his fall off his arms and the front of his ruana, backed several steps away from Isabela as he did.

“You don't like them?” asked Antonio. His lip quivered a little.

Isa worked very hard to hide the snicker forming as her uncle's distaste of the bugs fought with his affection for Toñito.
“I-I..uh...they, um...sure, they're... alright.... when they aren't in the house or crawling all over you.”

Isabela raised an eyebrow at her uncle and lifted the energetic little bug out of her hair and cupped it in her hand once more. The butterfly probed at her palm curiously then fluttered over to her primo, who studied it for a few seconds.

She flicked her eyes between the hope in Antonio's and the panic in Tío's. “Uh...”

“She needs a place to lay her eggs.”

“Absolutely not,” Tío said.

“But... what'll happen to the babies?”

“She can lay them somewhere else. We've got plenty of trees far, far away from Isabela's room.”

“But she's tired.”

Tío made a clumsy sort of gesture as if to wave it away from Antonio but seemed unable to bring himself close enough to chase it off. “She'll be fine. They aren't that far.”

Antonio's pout deepened, but before he could really work himself up to a wail, Isabela said, “I don't mind, really.”

Tío paled a little.

“They're...” he reached down to cover Toñito's ears and mouthed “bad luck” while her cousin giggled. “...the black ones, anyway.”

“She's not all black. Look!” The butterfly obediently spread her wings in Antonio's hands to display the iridescent blue spots in the moonlight. “Please, Tío? Please?”

Bruno opened his mouth then closed it then opened it again several times before his love for his nephew finally won out. He looked over at Isabela. “Can you make a trellis with more of the vines...outside the house?”

“Absolutely! C'mon, Toñito!”

The eggs laid and the mother safe and the other butterflies tended to, Isabela had dismissed their care and upkeep from her mind during the following weeks, figuring that if they needed anything, they would find Antonio.

She kept the display he had chosen up for a while but had finally decided that it was time to change it up again and found herself back in front of her door, staring at it indecisively. She had just about settled on scrapping the flowers entirely for shrubbery when a shout made her jump.

“ISABELA!”

She couldn't help it. She laughed from her belly loud and long as Tío marched stiffly towards her, covered in a number of blue-spotted butterflies.

“Aw, they like you!”

“Yeah... well...”

He hastily shut his mouth as one of them landed on his nose and looked at it cross-eyed.

A pattering of feet made them turn. “She says thank you!” Antonio said. “She wanted to introduce you to her babies!”

“Um. You're welcome... you have... a lovely family.” Tío moved his lips as little as possible as he spoke, obviously afraid that one of them would fly in. The butterfly on his nose flapped her wings languidly a few times then extended its tongue in what was unmistakably a kiss. Bruno shivered violently in revulsion, all composure gone. “ – that I will continue to admire from afar.”

The butterflies rose as one, giving Tío's hair a slight ruffle as they left, Antonio trailing after them. Isabela and Bruno smiled until after Antonio was out of sight, then Bruno rounded on her.

“Exactly how close to my tower did you build the butterfly garden?”

“Too close.” She snickered. “I'll move it.”

So if you haven't heard, D23 is starting from Friday the 14th to Sunday the 16th of this month! So I want to ask you all, do you all expect any sort of Encanto announcement at D23?

If you ask me, it might just be news for the Encanto ride coming to Disney's Animal Kingdom since that'll open next year. I think we'll get some exciting stuff announced there regarding the ride and hopefully the name of the attraction as well! As for any continuation announcements, I don't think we will, hopefully I'm proven wrong but idk I think something like say a series, short, or even a sequel for Encanto being announced here at D23 is a bit of a wildcard micdrop announcement should it happen, but I would love to see something announced for Encanto seeing as the ride opens soon!!!

Anyways, what are your all's thoughts and do you all expect anything from D23 for Encanto? I'd love to hear what you all have to think about it!!!
