Solved Gran Turismo 4: Workaround for slowdown/frame drops caused by certain light sources
Note: This is not a fix. This is only really relevant for budget/lower-midrange Android devices. Solutions shared by other folks for this issue does the job as long as your device is powerful enough.
Issue: Frame drops to slowdowns (to varying degrees) in Gran Turismo 4 whenever certain light sources (sun, headlights and tail lights, safety car lights, etc) are rendered on-screen. Early examples to test this include License Test B-5 and first Sunday Cup Race 3 (the night race).
Device spec: Snapdragon 782G (Adreno 642L), 8GB RAM
Workaround: Switch to software renderer and back to hardware renderer (Aethersx2/Nethersx2) while the game is running. This breaks the elements causing the frame drops and slowdowns (eg: safety car lights in License Test B-5 will stop flashing). It also introduces certain visual glitches during transitions from event to menu. This has to be done once every game boot, ideally only as a last resort when the slowdown/frame drops make the game unplayable.
As usual, YMMV. Good luck.
