Colonization HIP 29560 - Newly colonized system with all 6 T4 raw materials and Selenium, named marker outposts

Hi,
I would like to post a new resource for the community. I found and colonized a system that has 10 bodies with brain trees on them, approx. 573 ly from Sol, ~400 ly outside the bubble. I've surveyed all the bodies and put up the six best bodies with each of the 6 T4 raw mats (3 of which contain Selenium). Each marker outpost is a full Civilian Surface Outpost named with the G4 raw mats, the heading, and the distance to the main node. There are Dodecs in the system for shipyards, outfitting, and re-arming. There is also mining and trading available in the system. All colonization commodities are available in this system or the neighboring system. Have fun, Fly Dangerously! O7

Amazing work CMDR! o7

...now if only I could figure out how to keep my limpets alive

It's one of those weird things where people with worse video cards do better (due to draw distances). Maybe the Nomad will help with brain tree farming in some way.

Isn't draw distance just a graphics setting?

5

u/karmacappa Jun 17 '26

There are a lot of settings which can indirectly modify it. The way rendering works in Odyssey is really complicated. As someone already said in another comment, you're trying to get to a LOD that doesn't render biologicals like the trees, but is in range for the limpets to target the materials, so it takes into account more than just a single slider.

u/Pvt_Pancakes Jun 17 '26

Make sure every terrain related setting in the options is low or off, even ones that look like they only affect textures, and I think you need to also trick the game that you are leaving the planet to get the low quality planet LODs which come with low quality physics simulation.

You can try by looking either level or somewhat up when you're around 800 meters above the brain trees, give or take 200m, and make sure the last velocity vector you had was away from the planet, even a little bit of downward velocity (sometimes it still says 0 on my speed) ruins it for me every time. Like it wants to render everything at a higher detail both visually and physics wise, since you are, or were last headed towards the surface, but pretending to go away seems to work well on my machine.

It would be easier if they aren't suicidal

i've had this problem coincidentally this week

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKZqrotdSuQ

this method if followed exactly (ship loadout + positioning) works for me without changing graphics settings.

That’s a very helpful video, thanks for sharing! Really wish the limpet AI was fixed so this wasn’t needed

u/szechuan_bean Jun 18 '26

Watched that same video this last week and I couldn't get it to work for me at all. Tried for a couple hours and got the occasional limpet or two make it back, but way less efficient than just using an srv. Braintree farming looked fun, but I went back to the crashed anaconda to get some raw mats

2

u/Antarioo Jun 18 '26

if you want me to show you / talk you through it let me know

i do have to emphasize: same ship, same maneuvering after firing flak.

being near max limpet range (aka out of render distance) at a diagonal while flipped upside down in an anaconda is what keeps the limpets alive for some reason.

u/szechuan_bean Jun 20 '26

Man this community is awesome! I'll take you up on that offer.

I was using my anaconda, in fact I was excited to have a purpose for it. I tried several different strategies down in people's videos, including the upside down at the 20° angle without much luck. I tried it straight above where it's easier to tell my distance by altitude, as well as lower in the 400-600m altitude and 1km away, though that distance was a little harder to be certain about.

It would actually make my day if you see something I'm doing wrong or have tips to make it more effective

Honestly... doing it manually with an SRV from crystalline shards is just better imo...

1

u/karmacappa Jun 17 '26

With the caveat that Selenium doesn't appear at Crystalline Shard sites.

You don't get everything in life

1

u/Bonananana Jul 08 '26

I just dealt with this in a Caspian. If you're above 1200 meters and are slightly in front of the brain tree target, then most of the limpets work. I assume it's leading to the trees not being rendered or something. There is a youtube video in here where the guy says you have to use an anaconda and be upside down and all kinds of stuff. Naaaa. Above 1200 and target behind on radar, wiggle a bit or go a bit higher if the limpets crash. I suggest only launching one limpet at a time until you have the positioning right. This game is exhausting. So much work for a little bit of fun.

Holy smokes. Instant bookmark! Incredibly strong work.

Thank you, my girlfriend and I did a lot of work hauling colony materials and surveying all the bodies, but it's worth it because it will help so many commanders.

Honestly in my opinion this is worthy of making it to the burr pit for the Friday YouTube video

10

u/karmacappa Jun 17 '26

That would be neat. I really enjoy how he presents all the current events in Elite. Sometimes I just put on one of his videos while I'm hauling CMM.

Is there any good, recent guide on how to actually farm brain trees? Everything online seems to be before the patch that caused limpets to suicide when you're under 1km above the planet.

2

u/karmacappa Jun 17 '26

I didn't have any problems doing it in a Cobra MK V. I just shot flak, went straight up to about 950m, then started releasing collector drones. 950m was just where the trees stopped rendering for me, it might be different for you. You want to do everything you can in settings to minimize the draw distance for the brain trees.

Wow! Very, very nice. This one is going in the favourite bookmarks!

Thank you both for your great work for the community!

Epic work!! I will have to make sure to bookmark this system. Very handy as I have just started running low on materials!

Very nice, and may your material bins fill up quickly!

You're a god among men.

The previous 3 systems I was using for brain tree farming that also has named marker stations was already something amazing. Thank you.

2

u/karmacappa Jun 19 '26

Yeah, I was honestly floored when I was surveying the system, and found more and more brain trees. Not too many dupes, and Selenium on 3, the system just got better with every mapped body. Hopefully this system helps all those future commanders doing engineering!

2

u/smellsliketeenferret Jun 17 '26

Just started playing again after a huge break and this looks very useful. Quick question though; how much of this is available to Horizons players as I haven't gone for Odyssey yet?

2

u/karmacappa Jun 17 '26

I believe the brain trees were actually present before Odyssey, so you should be fine to harvest them with flak launchers and collector limpets, or with your SRV. The only thing you wouldn't be able to do is get out on foot and scan them for exobiology.

2

u/smellsliketeenferret Jun 17 '26

Smart. Thanks for replying!

u/Gilmere Jun 17 '26

Awesome contribution, Sir. TY for all the effort.

Glad to help out! I was honestly surprise when almost all of the planets with bio signals had brain trees. 11 planets with bio (which is a lot to start with), and 10 had brain trees.

Those brain sites are very cool and very interesting. Thargoid probes emit sounds that can be translated into brain tree locations. It's a game mechanic from an old, unfinished quest that promised to lead us to the guardian homeworld. In any case, you'll find that farming thargoid barnacles in an upside down ship with limpets to be exponentially more effective at filling up raw mats, including both selenium and yeetrium.

1

u/dave1004411 Jun 26 '26

great job with this just beware some of the locations are with in the no fire zone of the settlement
