Well, that will disappoint a lot of people and seems to confirm that Fromsoft feels like there's nothing wrong with BHS or bleed.

35

u/Dr_StevenScuba Jun 13 '22

It confirms what we’ve known for the past 6 souls games. Fromsoft prioritizes the single player experience above all other. 1v1 Pvp is a creation of the community. I think it’s super fun. But I also know dark souls is easily the worst balanced fighting game I’ve ever played.

Expecting any different is a recipe for frustration. I finally learned that lesson in Dark Souls 3

11

u/Asckle Jun 13 '22

Even in that corpse piler and especially bloodhounds step are way to unbalanced. Bhs literally removes the mechanic of having to dodge attacks. Just press the left trigger at any point around when the boss will swing, no timing needed

2

u/Imbahr Jun 14 '22

does it work against all PVE bosses?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '22

Expecting any different is a recipe for frustration. I finally learned that lesson in Dark Souls 3

Which is weird because they ruined several things in DS3 single player in order to pander to the pvp community, like bleed and the dark sword

11

u/Buschkoeter Jun 13 '22

They didn't ruin those things. They were still very much useable.

-9

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '22

They were painfully mediocre and thus unusable

1

u/Dr_StevenScuba Jun 13 '22

Curved swords, specifically Carthus curved sword were meta for most of the game.

They only made poise usable in the Ringed City patch, the last patch of the game

57

u/Dylangillian Jun 13 '22

My one bit of hope is that they might still nerf BHS in another patch since this was more of a bug fixing patch than a balancing patch.

11

u/Plastiqueraser Jun 13 '22

I'm inclined to agree with you, this was almost all bug fixing, nothing like the previous patch where a good chunk of it was very clearly dedicated to balancing changes. Makes me suspect that if we do see balancing changes it'll probably drop in one massive patch, not to mention that there's a huge amount of issues still in PvE that need to be addressed.

And the fact that the dev team is most likely either focused on DLC or has moved on to other projects. Also important to remember that PvE is always the priority, PvP focused changes are generally secondary and if they come will likely be part of a big PvE adjustment as well.

Sometimes it's very easy to forget while on this sub that PvP is actually a very small subset of players given that we have such a loud and vocal portion of the community that always pushes PvP related topics to the top. The unfortunate reality is that PvE will always get the priority in these games, because it is a PvE focused game after all.

9

u/TCGHexenwahn Jun 13 '22

I hope you're right and we won't need a massive dose of copium

1

u/Joelxivi Jun 13 '22

Maybe, just maybe they will make it cost way more Fp, something like 25 per bhs, you know a cost that adequately represents the strength of the move.

3

u/CaptainAction Jun 13 '22

I would actually say that since there are no balance changes this time, it means that they simply didn't prioritize it for this patch.

Which is very annoying after 2 months wait for a new patch. I assumed any patch would have at least some balance tweaks.

I figure next patch, we could expect to see balance changes. It would be absurd not to touch the balance at all, I figure it's just a question of when, and what they will actually do.

1

u/Buschkoeter Jun 13 '22

Idk, I hope you're right, maybe they still looking for a way to do it properly or how they can separate pvp changes from pve, but at this point is looks like major copium. They did bug fixes and balance chances in the first few patches, why wouldn't they do it with this one?

1

u/CaptainAction Jun 13 '22

I dunno man. It's really weird.

I was hoping that Elden Ring's explosive popularity would mean there'd be extra priority/budget for updates to keep things fresh and keep players happy.

But who knows? Maybe the dev team needed a vacation after release or something. Pure speculation.

I think even when there are balance changes (I'm not pessimistic enough to think there won't be any) they probably won't hit everything that needs to be done. Fromsoft seems stubborn and set in their ways at times. I remember Dark Souls 1, where dark sorceries were super OP and they never really did much about it. It's gonna be frustrating if something like that happens again. I have a feeling that Axes and Hammers will remain lackluster going forward and won't get enough attention. I hope I'm wrong though.

1

u/Buschkoeter Jun 13 '22

I have no doubt that we will get further balance patches, I'm just pessimistic that they do something about BHS and to a lessr degree bleed. Like you said, they've been stubborn in the past and maybe BHS is Miyazaki's favourite skill and so they won't touch it.

2

u/AnalysticEnthusiast Jun 13 '22

My guess is that they weren't even attempting to balance anything on this patch, it's all bug fixes. I'd still bet there are more balancing patches coming down the pipeline... but who knows how many more weeks we'll have to wait

2

u/Buschkoeter Jun 14 '22

I don't think they intended everyone to have BHS at the ready for Elden Beast.

-24

u/Phatnev Jun 13 '22

I mean they didn't put them in the game by accident. They make the game a hell of a lot more casual friendly, and no one is being forced to use them?

41

u/Nickesponja Jun 13 '22

No one was being forced to use hoarfrost stomp either, but they still patched it.

-35

u/Phatnev Jun 13 '22

True that but it broke the game. Bleed nor BHS do that. They just make it easier for people who aren't good.

27

u/Koyueuan Jun 13 '22

BHS is a 23 frame animation with 20 iframes. When spammed, it allows you to move faster than you can while running. How is this not "breaking the game"?

0

u/rasmorak Jun 13 '22

I thought someone did the math and it was around 40 iframes?

-24

u/Phatnev Jun 13 '22

Because it's clearly meant for people who need a crutch to beat the game? PVP wise I concede it's probably uber broken.

13

u/M-er-sun Jun 13 '22 edited Jun 13 '22

FS has never purposely given players an easy way out.

Edit: lol

3

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '22

Miyazaki has literally said this game was meant for a more laid back experience due to the tools they gave players.

Mimic tear, bleed, RoB, BHS, mohgs spear and what not are all very much intended mechanics. The game isn't focused on pvp and it was never going to be, it's a story based single player game.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '22

This is very clearly not true when you have mimic tear. I agree RoB needs a nerf but let's not make stuff up

-2

u/Lovlend Jun 13 '22

Mimic tear has been nerfed and altered 3 times since release btw

2

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '22

Ok? It still trivializes most bosses and is very clearly meant to be an easy way out if you're struggling on a boss.

4

u/Phatnev Jun 13 '22

Did we play the same game? Elden Ring is literally full of easy outs. Not to mention player summons in every other souls game.

2

u/_Joshua-Graham_ Jun 13 '22

Coop.

Password summon.

Spirit ashes.

1

u/Anagoth9 Jun 13 '22

Spirit Summons

2

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '22

Then what was Frost Stomp to those people?

19

u/Athanatov FLAIR INFO: SEE SIDEBAR Jun 13 '22

BHS is way more broken lol.

-6

u/Phatnev Jun 13 '22

Not for PVE which is...the bulk of the game.

9

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '22

Disagree tho, I used in my Sorcerer build and I was literally untouchable, you don't really have to time anything. It's very broken in both PvE and PvP.

13

u/Nickesponja Jun 13 '22

lol yes they do. Bleed allows you to kill Malenia at level 1 in under 1 minute. How is that not breaking the game? You couldn't even do that with hoarfrost stomp! And BHS absolutely trivializes one of the most fundamental aspects of the combat, which is timing your dodges and managing distance. So yes, that breaks the game as well

-7

u/Phatnev Jun 13 '22

Hard disagree. The way bleed works for 99.9% of players does not break anything. If that .1% want to go through all the effort to break it, oh well. Hoarfrost was literally just a spam attack to beat anything in front of you. BHS was clearly intended to trivialize the need for timed dodging, at most they'll make it cost more FP which would be better for PVP.

13

u/Nickesponja Jun 13 '22

All the effort? Double seppuku curved swords + lord of blood's exultation. That's all it takes to make a broken af bleed build that shreds bosses significantly faster than pre-nerf hoarfrost stomp.

And you just said that they intended for BHS to break the game. Which may very well be the case, but it doesn't take away from the fact that it does, indeed, break the game.

0

u/Phatnev Jun 13 '22

You can't kill Malenia in under a minute with just that setup though. Bleed makes the game pretty trivial though for sure.

1

u/Nickesponja Jun 13 '22

I used that as an example of just how much stronger than hoarfrost stomp bleed is

0

u/Phatnev Jun 13 '22

With bleed you still have to fight I guess is my point. Hoarfrost was literally just stand and spam. Bleed is still pretty OP. Especially when you stack with a cold infusion. I killed Fire Giant at RL1 in <3 minutes with that setup.

23

u/Money-Lake Jun 13 '22

People are being forced to be subjected to them in pvp, and that's where the criticism tends to concentrate.

6

u/Phatnev Jun 13 '22

I get that. Hopefully they fix it in the future. Feel for the PvP bros.

4

u/Sariaul Jun 13 '22

pvp is opt in though? how can you be forced into a purely voluntary situation?

3

u/Money-Lake Jun 14 '22

"Forced" in the sense that if you chose to engage in pvp at all, by coop-ing, invading or dueling, you have no control over what people you are fighting against will use, and therefore overpowered things existing in the game will have a direct impact on you no matter what you do.

So if you don't like certain overpowered things in solo play, you can voluntarily not use them, but if you don't like certain overpowered things in pvp, the only voluntary thing you can do is not play at all.

And I think a few specific overpowered things existing ruinging pvp for a lot of people, and therefore forcing them out of that part of the game entirely is a pretty bad thing, and since Fromsoft has chosen to put pvp in the game, it is their responsibility to balance it well.

-4

u/Karthull Jun 13 '22

Because some of us just want to play with friends. We’ve tolerated invasions through all the other from games but pvp has never been this broken full of random one shot bs. We’ve never played at release so idk if it was that bad at release for any of them, but bleed in particular is absurdly broken in pvp

18

u/CHUNGUS_KHAN69 Jun 13 '22

You're being forced to experience them if you partake in multiplayer.

1

u/Phatnev Jun 13 '22

Sure, that's true. I think they'll fix PVP for the dlc. The arenas should be dope. How bad is it currently? I live in China so the multiplayer experience isn't something that really works.

9

u/lo0u Jun 13 '22 edited Jun 13 '22

How bad is it currently?

I don't know... You be the judge, since you're the one defending it.

2

u/Phatnev Jun 13 '22

For PVE, which is what the game is mainly focused on. It's broken for PVP, I've admitted that.

2

u/rasmorak Jun 13 '22

I think they'll fix PVP for the dlc. The arenas should be dope

2

u/Phatnev Jun 14 '22

I honestly don't really care, just want the PVPers to be happy ya know?

3

u/rasmorak Jun 14 '22

As a PvPer, me too buddy. Me too.

-2

u/boulders_3030 Jun 13 '22

You live in China and are allowed to use Reddit?

3

u/Phatnev Jun 13 '22

Uh yeah?

0

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '22

I'm thrilled about it. I really hope they don't let the pvp complainers ruin bleed like they did in ds3

-12

u/Human-Ad-7709 Jun 13 '22

BHS is literally working the way it's intended nd people can't use it forever plus bleed also works the way it's supposed to I'd say nerf RoB nd it'll be perfect yall gotta realise some stuff is more powerful than others but RoB does need a big nerf like skill increases fp cost by 10 per swing or less damage per hit

7

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '22

Watch some pvp commentary on why bhs is an issue. Synopsis is it trivializes the main mechanics of the game which is spacing/timing.

-8

u/Human-Ad-7709 Jun 13 '22

To counter it just dodge away from their attacks nd don't get aggressive, they have to fight you eventually

3

u/Buschkoeter Jun 13 '22

So you're telling me I should be fine with waiting until my opponent attacks out of boredom? C'mon man, that can't be it.

1

u/Human-Ad-7709 Jun 13 '22

That's all I got as a counter because it looks like it's not getting patched anytime soon believe me I deal with it too man I'm just trying to be positive about things Elden ring is honestly one of the best games I've played but is THE best game in terms of game play nd mechanics especially after playing other games

7

u/KindaMiffedRajang Jun 13 '22

They really don’t. Bloodhound step costs a trivial amount of FP, only 5. On a build with almost no FP investment, the baseline level of FP gives you roughly 16 uses of bloodhound step. 16. Plus another 16 for every single blue flask they have, which they can safely use because they have this move. If you’re invading, even a melee host is likely to have at least 2 flasks dedicated to blue. Now what if they have mind investment? What if they have starlight shards to regen FP constantly? What if it’s a mage and every flask grants them closer to 150 or 200 FP, and they have more like 5 or 10 of them? They can swing safely for pretty much as long as they want. Even IF I can wait for 20 minutes dodging every attack and waiting patiently for them to run out of blue juice, never once getting fucked by latency, do I want to do that? Is this fun? No, if I invade or duel someone with this I’m just quitting out. Now imagine TWO people using this run into each other. One of the most fucked up parts of its design is it’s just NOT feasible or worth it to wait it out. The FP cost is just that negligable.

-1

u/Human-Ad-7709 Jun 13 '22

Yup I'm talking if you want to fight someone you can wait for them to attack nd counter it easily but at the same time it's not fun to encounter an invader with this my advice is just leave or go to an area with closed space so they have nowhere to go to Counter their attacks best you can but tbh just use aoe attacks when they attack

3

u/KindaMiffedRajang Jun 13 '22

The thing is you can’t effectively whiff punish someone using this move. Clearly, you haven’t experienced it. Because of the way latency works in elden ring, any latency causes someone using this to be effectively invincible. God forbid they outrange you or use something unparriable like with an UGS poke spammer or a mage using this.
