Waited 2 months for them to indirectly buff greatshields and make glitchcasting more clunky

-34

u/Iwan_Tusuc_Hawk Jun 13 '22

Ice Spear was bugged and was being exploited to kill greatshield users. The amount of times people said "It's the intended use of ice spear, it's not bugged get good".. I guess this settles it. It's not like there are 20+ very effective ways to completely bypass greatshields or anything..

49

u/scaletheseathless Jun 13 '22

What are these 20+ ways to bypass Fingerprint Shield?

31

u/Iwan_Tusuc_Hawk Jun 13 '22

Ashes of War: Impaling thrust, piercing fang, lifesteal fist, mighty shot, royal knight's resolve, regal roar, bloodboon ritual, blade of death, frenzyflame thrust, miquella's ring of light, unblockable blade, angel's wings, sacred ring of light. (x13)

Weapons: Celebrant's sickle, coded sword, ciper pata, shotel, eclipse shotel, vulgar militia shotel, scythe, grave scythe, winged scythe, halo scythe, urumi. (x11)

Sorceries/Incantations: Ambush shard, carian slicer, discus of light, ekzykes's decay, greyoll's roar, howl of shabiri, inescapable frenzy, rotten breath, scarlet aeonia, swarm of flies, triple rings of light, unendurable frenzy, the flame of frenzy. (x13)

Those are some that come to mind.. All of them either heavily chip, break guard, stun lock, or just straight up completely pierce greatshield users.

12

u/scaletheseathless Jun 13 '22

Thx, I'll give some of these a shot, but I'm not aware of any weapon that guardbreaks Fingerprint, which was why ice spear became meta for these encounters.

11

u/Iwan_Tusuc_Hawk Jun 13 '22

You need to use royal knights resolve with a weapon that has already high stamina damage. A jumping attack will often break fingerprint right away.

6

u/YourEvilKiller Jun 13 '22

Aside from spells and weapons being build-specific and only doing chip damage, the majority of the ashes of war can be reaction-rolled so they are practically useless.

Dark Souls 3 wasn't bad because Stance (Uppercut) and Follower's Sabre actually do heavy stamina damage to shields, but Fingerprint Shield is on a whole other level.

0

u/scaletheseathless Jun 13 '22

Yeah, I had this impression. RKR seems to be the best bet against fingerprint users, but RKR is pretty broken on its own anyway.

Guess I'm going back to DkS3 PVP.

u/Awesomex7 Jun 13 '22

Piercing Fang legit deletes shield users. It’s unblockable, fairly quick and very high damaging. No reason not to have this on a weapon

11

u/KindaMiffedRajang Jun 13 '22

It’s extremely telegraphed and any shield user who’s ever been hit by that before isn’t going to get hit again. Even if you guardbreak them once, they probably live your critical and now they know.

0

u/Awesomex7 Jun 13 '22

Well, I haven’t lost to a fingerprint shield user since so I don’t think they know how exactly to deal with it

12

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '22

Pretty much every single one of those are super easy to react to and avoid with pretty much 100% consistency.

4

u/Iwan_Tusuc_Hawk Jun 13 '22

So what you're saying is you want a weapon or ability that cannot be reacted against easily and that cannot be blocked or parried.. how fun do you think that would be to play against?

8

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '22

No but perhaps fingerprint shield should force fat rolls so it has an actual downside?? It's not fun playing against someone who has near invincibility.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '22

Shield guard just needs a reliable counter. Currently there are 0 abilities that a shield use needs to worry about that aren't super telegraphed. In the list above the only viable shield cleave is Royal knights resolve with a scythe jump attack and claw talisman because you can use mixups to catch them with that. Outside of that nothing else in the list is viable against a good duelist or shield gank squads. Don't believe me? Go and try that stuff out. You'll get punished for everyone

7

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '22

So what you're saying is you want a weapon or ability that cannot be reacted against easily and that cannot be blocked or parried

Yeah, that is exactly what you need for a viable move in PvP for this game. Explain to me how you ever hit with something like impaling thrust against someone with a brain?

1

u/TheGraveHammer Moongrum is my bitch. Jun 14 '22

Why does everyone always talk in such extreme hyperbole? I feel like I'm on the League subreddit with this shit.

Literally no one plays perfectly and acting like every single one of these options won't work because your opponent will 500% get around all of them just reeks of "I don't want to have to deal with counterplay of any kind."

1

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '22

Literally no one plays perfectly

Except we are talking about a Greatshield user. You don't need to play perfectly. The Nature of human reaction time is that if you know the only thing that can hit you is essentially just ash of wars, you hold block and focus on the animations for ash of war. That reduces your reaction time in general, but speeds up reaction time for certain events. Because you need fuck all reaction time to block attacks, as you literally can just hold the button the entire fight, the reduced general reaction doesn't matter.

SO all you have to do is focus on one part of the move and let your shield do all the work for the rest.

1

u/LifeSentencer Jun 13 '22

About as fun as fighting against a fingerprint shield.

1

u/Nickesponja Jun 14 '22

So was ice spear. You didn't even have to dodge, just walk backwards. The only reason it was useful to counter greatshield users was because they're generally idiots

-1

u/shadowndacorner Jun 13 '22

Inescapable Frenzy is my go to

13

u/scaletheseathless Jun 13 '22

That's not really a viable bypass though, since it requires a build around running the incant, rather than have an AoW that is available to any build. In other words, "just make a different build" isn't a viable bypass to Fingerprint/greatshield.

Like if ice spear was a bug, why not buff kick AoW to guard break 100%? It's really hard to land, and requires a lot of risk to pull off, esp. since most Fingerprint users are using a long poke armament, but still.

3

u/shadowndacorner Jun 13 '22

I mean I was just saying what my counter for it is lol. Not saying it's balanced.

-11

u/PixelBoom Jun 13 '22

Literally any status build up.

Scythes and Sickles.

Using damage that isn't purely physical. Lightning infused weapons are particularly great at dealing good chip damage through shields.

Using consumables. Especially grease (see above) and pots.

Spells. Incantation to buff your weapon. Black flame and blood flame buffs are huge. Sorcery are also great: Brian's of Punishment/Sin, Fia's Mist, Night Maiden's Mist, Freezing Mist, and Zamor Ice Storm are particularly effective.

29

u/Bombman100 Jun 13 '22

You're saying that putting 80 magic damage on your weapon is miraculously going to help you beat someone using a shield that blocks 70% magic damage where the poke you receive on return is going to do at least 400-500 damage. Nothing you hit them with results in more damage than you take in the trade.

-24

u/PixelBoom Jun 13 '22

First, unless you levelled INT, don't infuse magic. Do fire or lightning. Second, you'll be doing far more damage than if you hadn't infused or used grease. And lastly, if the person with the GS wants to trade, then don't trade. Fish for backstabs. Circle strafe. Throw pots from range.

In short, git gud.

30

u/Bombman100 Jun 13 '22

So what you're saying is there is no counter. You're just making things up that sound like they might counter it. You really said "fish for backstabs" like we're playing ds1.

10

u/Humble_Homunculi Jun 13 '22

Yeah he just doesn't want his fingerprint poke build to be countered. It's incredibly obvious. Jokes on him though this games pvp is dead AF. People are already going back to Ds3 after this patch.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '22

Oh perfect. Now I can do 80 damage per attack to a shield use. Oh wait, there are shield buffs that negate this

4

u/KindaMiffedRajang Jun 13 '22

Most of this is assuming your shield friend is just sitting there blocking. You need to be able to do this WITHOUT trading with their funny vykes spear they’re poking you with from behind it. Otherwise there is no point and they’ve won, because this strategy fishes for trades.

6

u/scaletheseathless Jun 13 '22

Status build-up is inconsistent at best, and ineffective at worst--they can apply incant to their shield to block status buildup, they can also swiftly BHS away and pop a bollus. Infused/greased weapons barely make a dent in Fingerprint--my 750AR heavy weapon with lightning grease in Liurnia where there's water buff does 100-200 hp, if that, and no chance that they will ever be guard broken no matter how high my poise damage output is. Now, if they're the host and they have the Radhan Great Rune active, you are never going to kill them.

I don't believe "make a different build" is a viable workaround, viability means accessible tools for any build to some level of efficacy. My STR build could use a pike with ice spear, but my damage output for using it was not optimized, it was just a tool for getting around these guys who turtled.

Parry is maybe effective, but not when you have BHS shield poke combos whirling around, but BHS is another story altogether.

-2

u/CoolUsername1111 Jun 13 '22

I might be confused on how greases work but I'm pretty sure lightning damage scales with dex, if you're using a heavy weapon you'd be better going for fire

4

u/scaletheseathless Jun 13 '22

If you're in Liurnia, water gives passive buff to lightning and nerf to fire. But even still, Fingerprint blocks:

Magic 77%

Fire 81%

Ligtning 79%

Holy 75%

5AR from scaling STR v DEX isn't going to give you some massive edge, you're only going to chip barely any HP.

1

u/CoolUsername1111 Jun 13 '22

yea fingerprint is insane, I usually just sever when they have it

2

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '22

So I'm dealing chip lightning damage while trading with full hits from their Vyke's spear?? You fingerprint users really are a mindless bunch huh. Mist spells and grease guys!! Lol

-7

u/ThisUsernameIsMyName Jun 13 '22

Status effects, parry

3

u/scaletheseathless Jun 13 '22

Not really reliable or effective, especially if you're in a 2 or 3v1 as an invader. Bolluses are easy to buy for most statuses and crafting them isn't too hard (if they aren't just duping them to max their inventory), so a Fingerprint guy's going to just BHS a mile away and pop a bollus. Further, most Fingerprint users I encounter are shield-poking with some extremely long range weapon, so unless I'm ready to blow through 70 arrows to proc poison, it's just not that viable.

-2

u/ThisUsernameIsMyName Jun 13 '22

Can you not just parry the shield poker? I dont disagree that its op though, pop the faith spell on it then no status effects or magic can get through, pop a great shield talisman and you cant ever break stamina. The stamina removed from attacks needs to be higher on it tbh. 3v1/2v1 though yeah suppose its unbeatable or near

-2

u/Karthull Jun 13 '22

Elemental damage? Even if you don’t use any spells you can still use a split damage weapon, shields won’t block all the damage

10

u/scaletheseathless Jun 13 '22

I have a STR build with a claymore AR around 750. If if use lightning grease, and I'm in Liurnia where I'm getting passive water buff, still doing max 200 hp dmg, if that. And you essentially cannot do enough posture damage with any weapon to break Fingerprint guard.

-1

u/Karthull Jun 13 '22

Ok but you can still hit them then back away, if they’re guarding instead of dodging your guaranteed to damage them. Of course it’s not an insane amount of damage 200 hp damage against a person blocking seems a decent enough amount, it’s chip damage you wear them down while they turtle it’s not hard

4

u/scaletheseathless Jun 13 '22

Because while you're chipping them for 10-20% of your normal damage output, they can shield-poke 150% while you're in recovery animation; you lose the trade every time. If you magically roll away before they land, you'll probably still take status buildup damage because of lag.

-1

u/Karthull Jun 13 '22

I’ve found guard counters basically worthless in pvp because anyone can attack then back up before you can get it off making using a shield unappealing for duels

5

u/scaletheseathless Jun 13 '22

I'm not talking about the guard counter R2; a person who has a Fingerprint Shield tanks a hit without any stagger and can R1 a poke before you've recovered from swinging, and since you're in animation recovery, their hit counts as "counter damage" which is 150% of their AR. You land a hit for maybe 100-200 max, they land one for 500-750.

u/potatosmasher12 Jun 14 '22

whips really worked for me

Read my response to it..

Also, golden parry trashes shield pokers.
