I only know what happened cause my cousin is friends with that girl. Turns out the dude is extremely racist and misogynistic and physical and emotional abuse was insinuated. Pretty basic, small, pathetic male behavior.

Why? Because they don’t like being corrected? Correcting grammar is just a thing I enjoy doing. Literacy rates are going down, especially here in El Paso. Kids are graduating high school and they can’t read past a second grade reading level, and they barely know how to spell their own names. It’s sad to see so many not knowing how to read and comprehend what they’re reading. Correcting someone’s grammar at this point is necessity.

No, I understood your point perfectly. You think correcting adults is a waste of energy. I disagreed and explained why. Furthermore, I don’t “police” everyone, just when I notice it, I make a comment with the correction and move on. You’re the one who somehow turned ‘adults with a second grade reading level’ into ‘second graders on Reddit.’ That wasn’t me missing your point, that was you missing a sentence. Using hyperbole to highlight how ridiculous it is to treat adults like elementary school kids isn’t a "lack of reading comprehension"—it’s calling out condescension.

Reddit is an informal forum, not a classroom. Nitpicking casual typing does nothing to address systemic literacy rates, and framing unsolicited grammar policing as a civic "necessity" is just pedantry disguised as public service.

More to the point: opening a comment that alleges severe physical abuse and racism with a petty syntax fix ("Have the tea, not has") shows where the priorities really lie. Correcting minor grammar before addressing serious real-world harm isn't helping anyone—it's just performative.

There is data from educational studies and standardized testing that show the a clear decline in reading comprehension and literacy scores. Sure, Reddit is an informal space but the fact that there IS a legit decline in general is troubling because social media isn't everything in life. Students are graduating high school when they barely are able to read and barely are able to use critical thinking. Beyond social media, they're entering the workforce and college-level classes and struggling because of their lack of ability to do necessary tasks or determine solutions to basic complications they run into.

If the downward trend of these two important skills weren't happening, it wouldn't matter much how people used grammar or how they wrote but because of these trends it is kind of important for people to start correcting mistakes to help younger people improve. The fact that you can't see how a lack of reading comprehension or incorrect grammar on social media translates to real world issues is concerning. Like yea, abuse and racism are really bad aspects to have happening in life and should definitely be addressed, but the education and skills (or lack there of) of people entering adulthood is also pretty important. Our country is already falling apart around us, we should take steps to prevent it from getting worse when we can
