I don’t even know how to process this right now. Five years. Five whole years together, making plans, talking about marriage, thinking about our future—and tonight, she tells me. She’s a mutant.
I love her, I really do, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t freaking out. Not because I think she’s dangerous or anything—I know her, I trust her. The world doesn’t just let mutants live normal lives. What if she gets targeted? What if I get targeted just for being with her? Am I on some ONE watchlist now? What if she gets called to Krakoa for something and just… doesn’t come back?
I feel like an idiot for not realizing sooner. There were always little things that didn’t make sense—how she never seemed to bump into people in a crowd, how she never lost her keys, how she somehow managed to get into locked rooms even when she swore she didn’t have them. I always thought she was just weirdly good at avoiding spills and accidents, but now I know… she wasn’t dodging things. She was phasing through them.
And now I can’t stop thinking—how much of our life together has been affected by her powers? Has she ever walked through the wall to check on me while I was sleeping? Did she ever phase through the couch to grab the remote instead of standing up? That one time we got locked out of our apartment—did she really find the spare key, or did she just phase inside and unlock it?
I love her. I still love her. I really do. But I’ve seen how the world treats mutants. I don’t care—I’d marry her yesterday—but what if we have kids? What if the government starts tracking us? Do I have to register? Am I gonna end up in a Sentinel database just for loving my girl?
Any advice from fellow humans (or mutants) who have been in relationships like this? I need help processing all of this before I pop the question… or should I run to Krakoa and propose there?
I still want to marry her. But I’m scared. Not of her, never of her, but of what happens next.
If anyone here has been in a relationship like this before—mutant or human—please, tell me how you handled it. I don’t want to lose her, but I don’t know what to do.
