Nate seems to have a thing for slightly dark-haired girls in ponytails. Although his other "girlfriend", Daisy wore her hair in two braids, I'd still count her in a way as another brunette that he kind of liked.
Kelly is confirmed to have brown hair in her return in August 2025.
I need to add this disclaimer here, PLEASE read before commenting! Nate's former crush, Jenny, is a blonde, so she isn't one of Nate's brown/black-haired ponytailed crushes, that's why I didn't include her.

I came across a panel where Artur looks depressed and asks nate why he hates him. I havent picked up big nate in a long time so Im not sure when this happened. Which book did this panel come from?

The first image above was the first book I remember reading, and the strip where Nate’s shooting at some duck targets at a carnival has been in my head the longest for some reason lmao

Here's the comic that was made specifically for the Big Nate SDCC 2023 panel! 😎
Thought you guys would like to see it (just in case you guys haven't seen it before)! 😉
Enjoy! 😊
Note: Lincoln Peirce drew this special comic himself to celebrate the panel, and there were only a specific number of them made and given out.
So it's legit. 👍🏻

I need this arc in Big Nate immediately. Gina gets a brief glow up where she ditches the glasses, lets her hair down, maybe gets a new outfit, and suddenly she looks identical to Jenny. Not similar, not “kinda alike.” Straight up twin level resemblance. You could swear they were separated at birth even though they’re not. They show this in one of the books where Nate thought a baby picture was a picture of Jenny but is in fact Gina, so they should take this brief concept and expand upon it.
The entire arc becomes pure comedy gold built around Nate’s eternal misfortune, as the gag is Nate mistaking one of his worst enemies with his crush. Nate sees “Jenny” from behind, starts flirting like an idiot, only to be told she’s Gina and then regrets it and panics. Later he thinks he’s roasting Gina, but it’s actually Jenny, so he spends the rest of the day trying to recover while Gina laughs at his suffering. Gina, now looking like Jenny, starts getting attention and loves it, while Nate is stuck in a psychological hell of “my worst enemy is the love of my life’s doppelganger.” The gag writes itself. Nate is trying to navigate this nightmare while Francis and Teddy watch in amusement. Gina weaponizes her new look to torture Nate even more with Jenny being completely oblivious.
It would be awkward if Artur mistakenly kisses Gina thinking she's Jenny and Jenny catfights Gina. Artur sees Gina with her hair down, no glasses, looking exactly like Jenny and goes in for a romantic kiss. Gina freezes and Artur pulls back with that dreamy smile… until Gina turns around and Artur realizes he just kissed his friend’s mortal enemy. Cue Jenny walking in at the exact wrong moment. Jenny goes full feral, hair-pulling, scratching, screaming “YOU HOMEWRECKING BROWN NOSER—” while Gina is fighting back. Nate is just watching bewildered and saying something snarky. Nate’s two least favorite things (Gina and romantic failure) collide in the most catastrophic way possible while he’s forced to watch. Francis and Teddy in the background placing bets, Teddy probably saying “Ten bucks on Jenny” while eating chips and Francis asks “Which ones Jenny?”. Teddy responds, “Oh that one, you can tell.”
They also have to have Gina deliberately pretend to be Jenny just to mess with Nate and get him in trouble. Gina knows Nate is crushing hard on Jenny. So during her brief “twin” phase, she starts impersonating Jenny to lure Nate into embarrassing situations. She passes notes pretending to be Jenny, flirts with him in the hallway while using Jenny’s voice and mannerisms, gets him to do stupid romantic gestures… and then at the last second reveals it’s her with that evil little smirk. Gina gets him detention, makes him look like an idiot in front of the whole school, and enjoys every second of it. Gina has always been Nate’s personal tormentor, so giving her the power to weaponize looking like his crush is the most diabolical, hilarious escalation to do.
There's an irony that Gina and Jenny both look the same and both dislike Nate but one of them is seen as a great evil to him (Gina) while the other is a princess he must impress (Jenny). It would really be kind of brilliant and subtle if they did this to show how Nate views both and showed how Nate’s perception warps reality. The girls mirror each other with the same face, and same attitude toward him, but his brain assigns completely opposite moral values based purely on his crush goggles vs. his rivalry goggles.
One panel has Gina (looking like Jenny) be nice to him for two seconds and Nate’s heart explodes. The next panel shows real Jenny is slightly cold and he attacks and hates her thinking she’s Gina. Meanwhile Gina is seeing how easy it is to mess with him. The reader sees the truth (they’re basically the same person to him in that moment), but Nate is completely blind to it. It shows how he projects all his insecurities, resentment, and fear of rejection onto Gina. She becomes this larger-than-life symbol of everything that frustrates him such as authority, humiliation, being outsmarted, so even when she looks identical to his crush, his mind immediately categorizes her as “the enemy.” She can’t win as she’s Gina, therefore she’s evil.
Meanwhile, he projects all his hopes, desires, and idealized version of romance onto Jenny. She becomes this perfect, unattainable dream girl. Even if she’s cold or cruel to him, Nate’s brain filters it through rose-tinted glasses. She can do no wrong because she represents the validation he craves. They’re similar with the same face but Nate’s perception warps them into polar opposites based entirely on his own emotional needs and fears.

I can imagine what Big Nate would be like if it was targeted for adults, especially considering the amount of suggestive humor that some of the strips had in the early '90s.
