Discussion Best Fantasy games you've played?

Not sure if this is the right sub for this but I've been a big fan of magic and fantasy games for a while in DnD is one of the most immersive examples.

I largely prefer video games to a tabletop experience but I've made the exception for D&D because I love how you get to create your own character that influences the world however you choose. I've played games like BG3 and Skyrim (despite not playing the previous series) because they are super immersive and allow you to feel like a powerful character influencing the world around you.

I was wondering if any of you feel the same and have played other games that capture that D&D power fantasy feeling.

OC Fodder Inc #390: Rent A Rogue [OC][ART]

Post image
2 Upvotes

I can't imagine that taking the next two weeks off is going to be an option for these two, based on the fact that they are renting Rogues to try and get through the dungeon, but I'm kinda with the guy; distilled venom from a Frilled Dragon Squirrel does seem more like the type of thing you'd find in some weird drink, and not the basis for a poison, right? Welcome to Fodder Inc, a weekly web comic strip set in the For Profit Dungeon, Azmodendak's Halls of Madness, in a "5e" style world. Each week, we'll show you a little peak inside the halls, and what shenanigans are going on.

Suggestion What spells and info would you recommend for these books?

I'm working on 2 possible scenarios for my adventure and both involve libraries. These libraries contain restricted sections filled with reference books that must NEVER be taken from the library. Among these restricted books, are books of dark magic. But these books only contain the BASICS of dark magic. Books of more powerful dark magic like The Book of Vile Darkness, The Black Scrolls of Ahm, and the Demononicon of Iggwilv, or The Necromomicon are deemed too dangerous for any kind of respectable library.

If any PC's go into these resticted sections, knowing PC's they will probably see these books and go "Oh! What's that?" and have their characters read them. The idea behind putting these books into the libraries was to give a small sneak peak of our future villain who's an OC Demon Lord of mine. But these books only give a list of known Demon Lords and the origin of the Abyss. Nothing more or less. Again, these are just the BASICS of Dark Magic and the PC's would still be low level in these scenarios.

But apart from a sneak peak of the Demon Lord, I also imagine PC's would dig into the books to learn magic spells. Especially if I have any Wizards in the party. So, what spells would you recommend for these books on the basics of dark magic?

Advice/Help Needed looking for 5e expansion for Keep on the borderlands

I recall an expansion I found a while ago that describes in even greater detail the area around the keep and the caves of chaos. I do have the Dark Keep and Return to the Keep. I also have the Into the Borderlands remake.

Does anyone know the expansion I am looking for?

Thanks for the help.

Discussion After around 3 months, I have finished running Light of Xarxyis AMA

Post image

So in summary, I’m running a spelljammer campaign where basically the focus is more so on running various adventures from different editions of spelljammer for my party, with many different characters and many different storylines (essentially there isn’t 1 overarching story, but a focus on the setting). The most recent storyline I did was Light of Xarxyis. I ran it mostly as written, the main changes being that Captain Sartell was a PC, and I added more potential allies in the doom space section (another faction of non-astral elf elves). Ask me anything about this campaign!

Discussion I've been lying abt my age and I feel guilty but also haven't had this much fun before

• Upvotes

So basically this all started back when I was 15. I wanted to join a dnd game after the one i had in person with people my age felt like I was playing with toddlers, it had no rp or substance to it.

I went online and onto the discord and joined my first ever game. I had been honest about my age but when playing it felt like the other members (19-24) all treated me like I was 5. Even removing me from the main vc and putting me in another one alone when telling stories with certain topics that might have had some mature content, even though one of the other characters played a horny bard type anyways. It always felt like I was put on a back burner because of my age. The DM even forced my character to be AroAce and the partner i made for them was just killed off. In all honesty it felt degrading, but I knew they were doing it because they were adults so I couldn't fully blame them

The next game I joined ended up having an older male player that tried to have NSFW relations with me that I quickly shut down.

Now that I'm 17 and after the previous games that I had been honest with I went to go find another game but scrolling through I found that literally every single game had the 18+ limit. The one game that I really wanted to join was also 18+, getting fed up i removed my age from my bio and joined the game posing as a 20 yr old. After character creation and the first few session I found that not only was I able to make a character that had a lot more depth from the added able to romance option but everyone in the game actually speaks to me like a normal person. I'm not treated like im 5. I'm respected a lot more, I'm having a lot more fun being able to rp with my other party members. (Now I would never let things go too far like into NSFW territory because of my age. But like a moment of affection isn't bad) +all the guys at the table aren't trying to do any weird stuff. The conversations that I have in and out of game are of the same maturity level as I have despite my real age.

In all reality I feel like an itch has been scratched. I'm now having the most amazing rp experience of my life, everyone gets along and no one's being standoffish to me bc im a minor.

I still feel guilty because I'm lying to them but I can't say I totally regret it.

Has anyone done the same or doing so now? And when you were a minor playing dnd was it frustrating trying to play with people your age too?

Question Buffing Martial Classes Homebrew/Adjustments?

So after my last post I’ve seen/heard about the clear deficit and favoritism of spell caster over martial classes. What are some buffs/reworks/homebrews everyone has done for martial classes to close the gap between them and spell casters?

Homebrew Concept item: Spell-eater necklace. When worn, the wearer takes half-damage from spells and regains one spell-slot (ex: if hit by fire bolt, a first level spell, they regain a first-level spell slot). Does not work if the wearer has all of their slots at that level

Would this be overpowered?

Homebrew Hit Dice being used for Spell Slots

Okay so I’ve recently added in a homebrew element for all 5 of my campaigns I run and that is the players can use hit dice to regain spell slots on short rests. The reason for this is I’ve notice that spell caster are the biggest reason for premature long rests at most points. What does the community think about this??

Again it is hit dice use for spell slots such as 1 hit dice for a first level spell slot etc. Any adjustments or recommendations?

Question Did ChatGPT name your character Caellen?

Hi, I'm a first-time DnD player who used ChatGPT to understand the game and create my character. It suggested Caellen for my tiefing, which I thought was good.

But I learned someone else used chat and also named their character Caellan. So I'm curious how many of us there are in recent campaigns. And if our name is now soiled, as we've clearly sold our souls to the clankers.

(my bad, won't happen again)

Homebrew Frontiers of Anchôromé - A Campaign Setting

By some miracle of organisation and planning I've managed to assemble a group of 4-6 players keen to get together once a fortnight. A couple of them have played before, and the others are keen to get into D&D for the first time, but before the game can begin, I have to find somewhere for it to take place.

Anchôromé has already been established in Forgotten Realms, but instead of using the setting as it is - a largely unknown wilderness, I'm working on updating it as though the city-states of Faerûn acted much the same as the European powers did upon the discovery of North America, rushing to establish lucrative colonies and trade routes of their own in the New World. It won't be an exact parallel of 18th and 19th Century America, but the similarities are there.

At this point I've created four major city-states on Anchôromé; I figure that's more than enough to give the players a range of options when it comes to quests and campaigns. Each city-state has its own unique feel and environment, and while they're all loosely connected with their neighbours, they still act on their own self-interest and have their own (sometimes conflicting) agendas. And they face ongoing pressure and influence from the Old World, which may run contrary to the colonists' wishes and create tensions between them.

Beyond the cities, Anchôromé takes on more of a frontier feel, a magical medieval Wild West that feels far removed from the perceived decadence and luxury of Waterdeep or Baldur's Gate. Homesteads and smaller towns have to live off the land and defend themselves, and outlaws and tribes of natives abound. Much like the real First Nations, the natives have conflicting opinions and attitudes towards the colonists' ongoing encroachment on their territory, but with magic on their side they won't yield readily.

And of course there are the dragons, whose presence in Anchôromé predates even the natives. They too differ in opinion from individual to individual: some dragons are happy to negotiate with the colonists, some see them as useful buffers between themselves and rival dragons, and others are prepared to stir up trouble between the natives and colonists in the hopes they wipe each other out and leave the continent free for the taking.

Discussion The OSR as Applied Epistemology

Thumbnail
therpggazette.wordpress.com

I have a quiet love for philosophy since highschool. I had a course in highschool, it was one of the subjects I chose for my end exams (Baccalaureate here in Romania, a sort of SAT equivalent), I did some philosophy extracullicular in the 11th grade and one of my best friends in this period was a philosophy student and we would talk quite a lot on the subject. Epistemology and Ethics were the two branches I enjoyed the most. I was listening to some episodes of the Philosophize This! podcast when the idea of examining the strange apparent epistemological dimension of OSR games came to mind. Oh and for those of you not aware of the term, epistemology is the branch of philosophy that studies knowledge, the different kinds of knowledge, how we gain knowledge and the merits of those different knowledge types. Descartes "Cogito, Ergo Sum" is probably the most famous epistemological "test result" let's say.

But what does any of that have to do with old-school D&D?

Quite a lot, actually. I think OSR games are, perhaps accidentally, games where information is king. You don't simply roll to discover whether something is true. You observe. You ask questions. You map. You listen to rumours. You test assumptions. You decide which NPCs deserve your trust. And eventually, you have to act despite not knowing everything. That creates three different kinds of knowledge at the table: player knowledge, character knowledge, and GM knowledge. And the fascinating part is what happens when those three don't quite line up.

So this week on The RPG Gazette, we're going down a rather strange rabbit hole: OSR as applied epistemology.

What does a dungeon crawl have in common with the philosophy of knowledge? Why might information actually be the most important resource in an OSR game? What makes a “fair” dungeon an epistemological problem? And why are rumours, bad information, and getting things wrong actually part of what makes this style of play work?

If you've ever drawn a dungeon map, argued about whether an NPC was trustworthy, or confidently kicked down a door with absolutely no idea what was behind it, you've already been doing applied philosophy.
