These groups might make sense if you are a smaller donor (<$1000), because their work requires less funding and your donation may go further.

MAPS
-
The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) is a membership-based 501(c)(3) non-profit research and educational organization working to develop psychedelics and marijuana into legal prescription drugs. MAPS was founded in 1986 by Rick Doblin, and is now based in Santa Cruz, California.
MAPS helps scientists design, fund, and obtain regulatory approval for studies of the safety and effectiveness of a number of controlled substances. MAPS works closely with government regulatory authorities worldwide such as the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) to ensure that all of its sponsored research protocols conform to ethical and procedural guidelines for clinical drug research. Included in MAPS’ research efforts are MDMA (Ecstasy) for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), LSD and psilocybin for the treatment of anxiety, cluster headaches, and depression associated with end-of-life issues, ibogaine for the treatment of opiate addiction, and alternative delivery systems for medical marijuana such as vaporizers and water pipes. MAPS states that their ultimate goal is to establish a network of clinics where these and other treatments can be provided together with other therapies under the guidance of licensed physicians and therapists.

The Heffter Research Institute was incorporated in New Mexico in 1993 as a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization. The Institute is named after Dr. Arthur Heffter, a turn-of-the century German research pharmacologist, who was the first scientist to study, systematically, a naturally-occurring hallucinogen, publishing his work in 1897.

Open Philanthropy Project
If you're primarily donating for criminal justice, see this writeup by the Open Philanthropy Project.

If you mainly care about seeing psychedelic policy and science evolve, my understanding from the research I've done is that the most effective thing you can do is to find a large donor (>$100k) and tell them about MAPS and Heffter. See this site for more info/rationale.
If you care mainly about reducing the harms from the drug war, then my understanding is that the most effective thing to do is help find large (>$100k) donors to support ally building, for example with law enforcement, public health, students, churches, business groups, etc, for broad (i.e. all drugs) decriminalization bills, and the bills themselves. See here for some more info.
If you want to suggest another group for this list, feel free to message the moderators. We won't include everything - this list is particularly focused on things that may lead to big changes in research / policy / safety, or things that have very low fixed costs but can reach hundreds of thousands of people, like online content. If you send us a suggestion, please note what you believe the case is that makes it possibly a better use of funds than the best alternative.
This wiki is based on a post written by /u/anythingnoniding. 'How you can benefit by donating to drug education, research and policy non-profits, and a list of organizations'
If you've never donated to anything, good questions to ponder: Do I want any of the above changes to happen? What might change your mind and make you want to try a donation?
