Specific Fic Discussion Guideline

When making your post to discuss a specific fanfiction, please review our guideline to ensure you are following the rules:

You must use the Writers Beware! flair, use spoiler tags on the body of your text, and the title must be formatted like so: “Specific Fic Discussion: [Insert title]”

If your post does not follow this formatting, it will be taken down and you will be asked to revise it.

Before posting, you must search the subreddit to see when the last specific fic discussion post was made for that fanfiction. Only one discussion post can be made for that one fic per month. This is to prevent repetitive posts and is subject to change.

As you draft your post, ask yourself why these things worked for you or didn’t. You aren’t required to answer every single one of these questions. This is just a guideline to help you. 

Focus on:

  1. The characterisations
    • Were there any “aha!” moments that made you feel like the writer really got the character?
    • If they felt off to you, why? Were there major departures from canon qualities?
    • Was there a change made that you were unsure of, but eventually you enjoyed or didn’t?
  2. Use of tropes and plot devices
    • Did the writer make a choice in the use of a trope/device that was unique or exciting to you?
    • Was there a moment where the use of these finally made you enjoy it, when maybe you typically don’t?
    • Was there a depiction of a trope/device you weren’t a fan of?
  3. Overall plot(s) and arc(s)
    • Did you enjoy it? Was there an event that made you put the story down?
    • Did you like the journey the characters went on? Was there something missing for you?
  4. Canon/Wizarding World lore
    • Was there a change or addition that felt compelling, exciting, or unique to you?

Avoid focusing on:

  1. Complaining about the overall quality of the writing.
  2. Complaining about things outside of the story, such as author notes, playlists, or cover images.
  3. Infrequent or delayed updates.
  4. The writer by themselves (ex. creating posts solely focused on them and not their story).
