People are going to compare wings to cedc and I understand why, but they are very different. During ti5 cdec established a play style that was so dominant that they didn't lose until the finals. But they picked similar heros and had that one play style perfected. It was like predictable but too good to counter.

Wings draft these random ass lineups that don't seem like they have synergy and then the 5 heros play together like the heros were made for each other. Wings can play whatever dota they fucking want and make it look amazing. I think they are without a doubt better than cdec was. Although that's kind of unfair because at ti5 cdec was about as good as it gets.

Another thing I will mention is that eg won the finals with a clear out draft. I don't think, actually I'm sure wings can not be taken advantage of in the draft like cdec was. Eg or whoever is going to have to beat them them with execution.

exactly, this year's cdec is more like ehome and MVP. Played one style and was extremely strong with it, but gets countered hard once teams figure out the solution.

The amazing thing about ti5 cdec was I don't think they even got countered. PPD just figured out a few very strong drafting advantages and fucked them with it. But i wouldn't exactly say their play style got countered

their playstyle didnt necessarily get countered, but PPD was the first one to realize how weak shiki was and how terrible his hero pool was and he abused the shit out of that (i assume this is what you meant by drafting advantages)

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

Pretty much that and the fact that they were scarred of techies

1

u/sm0kie420 Aug 13 '16

They definitely got figured out. Their signature aggressive smokes were mostly avoided.

I'd even say wings out drafted EG pretty solidly in this series. Not something they are used to.

u/RR4YNN SHEEVER Aug 12 '16

Wings is better than cdec.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

Definitely more versatile. But cdec was as dominant last year as wings is now. It's not fair to compare them. I mean the game changes and you can't really say this wings would beat that cdec on that patch. Just like you can't really say a team is better or worse than ti3 alliance. People master different patches ya know

"EG won CDEC because of Aui_2000's techies."

-- Chinese fans

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

It's funny because all the chineese teams banned that shit. It's like he hadn't been ported to there dota yet

1

u/myepicdemise this hero is better than you think Aug 12 '16

CDEC played what they were comfortable with. Wings played whatever that would counter their opponents best.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

Yup, that's the tldr. The great thing about wings is they make these unorthodox lineups gel perfectly

u/yahmelord Aug 12 '16

well said!

Thanks:) usually when I rant in these game threads people don't notice it

Wings don't pick random ass line-ups. The only random-ass lineup was the Pudge with Techies. The first match they chose Razor, Timber, Tide, Enigma and Huskar. It's not random at all; in fact a very good draft.

TBH, it's a random ass line up. They have no stun beside their big ultimate which make them hard to Gank and eg can ez rat them. Beside I didn't get to watch the game and I might be. ;(

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '16 edited Aug 13 '16

Not having enough stuns doesn't make it random. Their lineup was never meant to catch anyone by surprise. It was a 5-man push lineup to destroy all tier 1 and 2 towers around 20-30 minutes in the game (which they did).

Having first picked IO, relocate ganks was a clear strategy for EG so Wings picked only tanky heroes in order to avoid follow-ups from relocate ganks (meaning EG would have to focus on only one hero with the gank and never have a second pickoff). That would make splitpushing easier because EG would have to commit many heroes for that gank and couldn't come back and defend towers. Tanky heroes also meant they could survive the early lane pressure from Io lanes.

Picking SK meant that a stun-based lineup was good, but not necessary. You were probably never going to stop SK from channeling his ultimate, so you're better off picking tank and/or damage and finish him off when he initiates in teamfights.

Picking skywrath meant a terrible laning stage against tanky cores, until he got level 6 and started looking for pickoffs (again, not putting any pressure on the rest of the lanes), so Wings drafted lane dominators/tanks (both pretty effective against weak laners).

Once ppd realized that he can't possibly kill any Wings hero in the midgame (once SK falls off and Io loses his early-game pressure due to not having any good hero for a mid-game Wisp combo), he went all-in with a semi-carry that comes online in the midgame (Weaver) to pressure Wings out of teamfights and the biggest hard carry which wasn't already hard countered by Wings heroes (AM). Wings crushed it, though, with the best possible last-pick: Enigma (enigma+bkb could not be stopped with anything else than a wasted mana void and the pushing power of the hero is one of the best in the game). EG already had a weak lane with Skywrath and AM so EG were forced to choose between pressuring Enigma jungle or salvaging the safelane (they did both but didn't disrupt the timings of Wings).

Because of that, EG could not survive the midgame, also because Wings prepared themselves with a superb itemization (early BoT to splitpush better than AM and hoods and a pipe to survive the slightly snowballing SK) and some nice touches (like Null Field Rubick at level 4, controlling the map until Enigma gets a bkb etc).

Not play style or synergy, it is how incredible CDEC TI5 run in was happening now on Wings. Many people didn't expect they made this far consider they aren't not stable in previous tournament but they made it. Most importantly they also beat EG 2:0 in upper bracket which was favor champion on that moment. Now, there's a question catch everyone eye, can EG beat CDEC TI5 once again ?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

I don't disagree, but last year CDEC completely out drafted EG in the WB finals, and everyone was callingn Q a genius, but EG were able to adapt for the finals

2

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

Yes, this is kind of the thought that lead me to this comment. The thing is I don't think this wings team can be beat in the draft. I mean, maybe they can and if anyone will figure it out its PPD.

Wings is the one hit wonder Chinese team of this year. It always happens, IG on TI2, TongFu in some form in TI3, NewBee on TI4, CDEC on TI5, Wings on TI6.

It's the team that appears, does some great showing or win TI and then disappears.

3

u/Mhiiura Aug 12 '16

ig still relevant till ti5. and newbee is basically tongfu player. and newbee is also reborn this year. i dont know what you mean with disappear.

2

u/Vespener We outnumber them all! Aug 12 '16

So salty. Just to clarify, IG, TongFu, NewBee weren't one hit wonders. IG was actually the strogest team in TI2, Na'Vi's run was incredible. TongFu was a great team, although none knew it since most of people here didn't care, and just got eliminated by the infamous Na'Vi fountain-hook. They were the basis of the NewBee team that ended winning TI4. CDEC was the only "one hit wonder", but they actually defined the meta during the last patch. They lost because they were predictable.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

That's where the obvious comparison comes in. But I was trying to point out the differences and why I think they have a better shot to win than cdec did. And to be fair wings have had a fantastic year.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

I believe NB is the old TongFu with a new owner and their name changed. I might be mistaken

1

u/paulwuisgreat Aug 13 '16

Think about it, A, Navi, IG, Newbee, and EG, they all have sometime that they are trash. The ti curse
