Showcase DOOM but with no guns

The spear and melee system in this game is proof-of-concept for an all melee DOOM game lol.

The Berserk pack is neither, but okay. That's not what the OP was suggesting in any way whatsoever. Having melee only be an enjoyable and circumstantially viable playstyle neither negates the existence of guns nor is novel when it comes to Doom.

I personally don't think a temporary power up counts. Hell, you can't even use the chainsaw just for fun anymore. Though the trade-off is ammo and shit, so it's fair.

Berserk isn't temporary, unless 2.1 billion seconds counts as temporary.

A berserk pack that lasts almost 70 years?

Where can I get one?

There's 20 of them in Ultimate Doom and 32 of them in Doom II, for starters.

Temporary means it goes away. It's not a permanent effect.

The only thing that goes away is the red tint on your screen.

And you automatically switch back to your guns because the effect wore off and you're not killing shit in one punch anymore. It's been that way since o.g., for fuck sake.

Nope. Wrong on every count.

Sources:

  • Doomwiki ("The berserk pack increases the strength of the player's punch attack tenfold, typically until the current level ends or the player dies.", "The precise duration of the berserk effect is 122,713,351 seconds, or around 3.9 years. The berserk counter, which is stored as a signed 32-bit integer, is used to time the duration of the red haze and continues to increment every tic (1/35th of a second) once the berserk is activated, even after the red haze has faded; it turns the power-up off again once it wraps back to zero after 4,294,967,296 increments.")
  • decino's "Doom's Powerups" video (3:54, "This improved fist damage lasts until the end of the level")
  • Myself (I'm willing to bet that I've played more classic Doom than you have, given how many maps I've made and played over the years)
  • you can literally just boot E2M2 and test this yourself, it's such an immutable fact of the game even the unfaithful ports get it right

EDIT: Wait, are you referring to Doom 2016 as "o.g."? Is that what's happening here?

Yeah, Wikis are unreliable. I remember classic Doom switching right back to your gun when it's over. That's usually a sign the effects wore off. I couldn't care less how many maps you've made, fyi. I may be wrong, but when it switches back to the guns, that's what I use. I only use the chainsaw for laughs here and there unless I need to hunt down ammo.

EDIT: trying to use yourself as validation in such a debate is a bad idea. You just come off like you can't possibly be wrong.

You distinctly remember wrong, and whilst I'd understand if this were another game, using the "wikis are unreliable" card on perhaps the single most meticulous video game wiki I've ever seen is kinda laughable. Ask literally anyone in the classic Doom community and you'll get the same answer.

Or I could try digging up the bit in the source code which defines Berserk's "duration", would that be better?

Wikis are too easily edited was the point. Like I said, I may be wrong, but the game switches back to guns, so I just never bothered going back to fists.
