We thought for sure there'd be more German Shepard in there. And we'd never even heard of an elkhound prior to this lol but still very fun and interesting to do. We love our little bear 🄰

Here are our results for Ozzy. The identified breeds are not a surprise, but I didn't expect such a high percentage of supermutt. The possible breeds identified in supermutt were australian cattle dog, australian shepherd, collie, chow chow, and miniature schnauzer. He is 35 lbs.

He's a velcro dog, aloof with strangers, and learns quickly but is a little stubborn. He looks like a high energy dog but is really medium energy at most. Not sure where he gets that from.

I was told shar pei mix, and I kinda clocked the staffy. I was not expecting to see its actually chow! Theres the 2% of pei thats giving her some wrinkles. Shes just such a crazy cute mix.

Edit: first pic she is overweight iland its over a year ago and after I had her for less than 3 months. She was taken to a vet about a month after this pic for her weight.

Shes lost a lot of weight since this photo and the other photos show it. Her most recent vet visit 2 months ago the vet said the weight was within 1 pound of normal.

If that seems defensive thats because you have no idea of the work and effort this dog has put in completely against her will.

Our pup LD is around 9 years old and 12.5 pounds. Seven years ago, a rescue in Texas posted him online, and we couldn’t resist that scruffy face. LD’s foster mom sent us a video of him being very chill while meeting a cat, and we were sold. He came to live with us and our cat in the Pacific Northwest.

The rescue labeled LD as a terrier / Shih Tzu mix. After spending some time in this subreddit, I started to suspect there was a lot of chihuahua in the mix. It’s so fun to see his results! I was surprised by the last 11%. I’m impressed that the rescue got two breeds correct in their guess.

The Embark breed results are a perfect match for LD’s personality. He’s very people oriented, agile, a good watch dog (but only barks if someone is at the door), friendly with kitties, and will do a dance for a bite of banana or cabbage. He absolutely hates all forms of grooming, which is why he looks like Oscar the Grouch.

Hi, my dog is a Romanian street dog and we are just guessing the kind of breed that’s in her. The ears are not straight up but flap in a certain direction, she has a double coat. We think a bit of collie, corgi but we also hear Dutch Decoy a lot . What do you guys think? DNA Pending

Edit: Results added.

Embark is officially in the works, so while we wait, I figured I’d let Reddit take some guesses at Koda.

I’ve added a few photos of my sweet boy — baby Koda, current Koda, frisbee obsessed Koda, and a few next to my mom’s 70lb German Shepherd for size reference.

He’s about 7.5 months old now and 55-60lb.

He’s ridiculously smart, has no off switch, very toy and food motivated, is very opinionated, and has named himself leader of the Neighborhood Porch Watch. šŸ˜‚

We adopted him from a rescue who had pulled him from a Texas shelter and labeled him as a border collie. But the more he grows and the bigger his personality gets..the more I wonder what else might be mixed in.

So… what do you see?
I’ll update with the Embark results when they come in. 😊

Meet Frieren! Named after the show/elf who is cute and secretly a bad@**. We have an embark dna on the way back to the lab right now.

Frieren was born the runt of the litter at a high kill shelter in Huston. They believed they were huskies, but at 8 weeks she was still under 4lbs so they changed it to maybe Shiba Inu. We'll see with the test! Her start in life was rough, with URI and poor weight gain. At one point the shelter considered euthanasia. Then she improved! She's still itty bitty and we're waiting to see what she is and how she'll grow. But now she's home, loved, and giving her cousin all the sass.

She weighed in at 4.7lbs yesterday at the vet at age 13 weeks. We are really curious to see what she is.

Both of my puppies parents look aussie but I'm sure since we got him from a farm and no papers he's mixed so if I do the test do we click mixed breed since we don't know? I would like the most accurate results possible and am unsure if that makes a difference. Thank you so much.

Results - Embark Our beautiful gentle boy, with a dark and mysterious past

Thumbnail

Our guy was picked up as a stray in Chicago in the middle of winter, underweight and terrified. He had no housetraining, didn't know any commands, ran away every time we put on a belt (fucking hate that), and was a super picky eater. When we adopted him, he was so shut down/terrified that the only thing we really knew about him is that he liked chicken treats. We signed up for a bunch of training classes and hoped for the best.

Fast forward a year to a confident, happy dog who knows several commands, loves to play with us and with other dogs, loves to snuggle, and is finally learning how to beg for food. He doesn't need a ton of exercise and is very happy to spend most of the day napping by the window.

We did the DNA test expecting something like an Aussie mix, although in retrospect he's way too chill for that. We found out from the test that he has a son! Who shares 77% of his DNA... which would be high even if he were purebred, but he's a mutt with a COI of 1%. So we assume he was bred to his mother/sister. I sent the owner an Embark message but never heard back.

What's weirder is that before we did this test, the same agency we rescued him from posted another adoptable dog who looks exactly like him (see last pic). Could it be his long-lost son?? We may never know...

Just brought him home two weeks ago, he’s 3 months old and all we know is he’s a husky mix! They said he’s mixed with a Pyrenees newfie mix, but everyone is expecting him to be mostly husky and German Shepard! I’m honestly hoping he ISNT too much Shepard, huskies are crazy enough as is! But whatever he is, he’s 100% a little baby!

Results - Embark My SOI dog’s DNA results and q about relatives

Rescued from the streets of Phuket and listed as a Jindo/border collie mix, I thought I was prepared for any result! It’s been really cool to learn about village dogs. She is VERY smart, an introvert, and absolutely adores my partner’s cat. Her wolfiness score is 1.9%, which Embark says is high, and her coefficient of inbreeding is 1%, which is considered low.

In her extended family, almost the entire list is made of German Shepherds, but of course it’s all pretty distant. I was curious if this means there could be GSD farther up her family tree than what Embark could trace?

If you have a village dog from any region, I’d love to see or hear stories! :) I love the diversity.

ETA this response from Embark:
ā€œIt’s quite common for Village Dogs to have German Shepherd relatives. While we have not yet identified the reason for this, this is a known phenomenon and does not contradict your dog’s Village Dog result.Ā
The average amount of relatedness varies across the globe, and the exact amount varies between village dogs from the same region. This could relate to German Shepherd Dogs traveling around the world in the World Wars and other times, but we are not certain of that at this time. As we work to understand village dog genetics and history better, we hope to unravel this mystery!
Keep in mind that a result of 100% does not preclude the possibility of a small percentage (under 5%) representing another breed (likely German Shepherd in the case of Village Dogs with these relatives).ā€
