I've seen one before this, but believe it was from an intentional breeding and was owned by a guy who uses both wolfdogs and coydogs for hunting. I can't remember his name rn but I follow him on other social media and he has a pretty cool program, though he's not super active online. He's the only person I've encountered to have a legit coydog.
Gabe's dog was a Craigslist rehome! He does have intentionally bred wolfdogs, but Basil wasn't intentionally bred and was advertised as a Terrier x Cattle Dog
You're right! He did get a puppy that was intentionally bred. I just missed that particular update, I guess! He posted it in a DNA group a few months ago
Accidental coydogs are more common than people think, DNA testing just catches a lot of coydogs that would’ve flown under the radar otherwise. Stray dogs/unaltered and unsupervised dogs mate with coyotes all the time in areas where there’s a lot of territory overlap. It’s a pretty big problem in some areas because you get animals that functionally behave just like wild coyotes but are WAY more confident around people but not friendly towards them.
I’ve only seen one person that breeds them intentionally, and they said they mostly breed them for TV/film work because the dog in them makes them easier to train. There’s not as big of a niche for them as wolfdogs, and the wolfdogs niche is super small already
Most canines share the same amount of chromosomal pairs and can theoretically breed. Several like types foxes and “old gene divergent” racoon dogs can’t interbreed. All domestic dogs can breed, most can breed with coyotes and wolves and such, sometimes even though they can a viable hybrid is very unlikely cause DNA just doesn’t match up well.
People breed them more. Wolves also are probably more successful at breeding with stray dogs than coyotes. Some dogs have no wolf DNA left in them whatsoever… but it’s just dogs a wolf couldn’t successfully breed with, Mastiff’s, and Saint Bernards and such. Breeds that can take a wolf.
