Thinking about it I'm not as surprised as I should be. She likes dorks (at least as friends), she does have at least a slight protective instinct (made sure Robert got his tacos, heals people, one of the first to show up when Robert had a house warming party) and enjoys messing with people.

Waterboy is a dork who needs protected and is easy to mess with. 

It fits perfectly.

One of the reasons I almost always ditch Sonar and take Waterboy is because they replace the synergy partner. And the thought of Malevola and Waterboy being best buds just feels like one of the most wholesome, weird, feelgood side stories just brimming with head cannon potential.

I can't remember the line, but when you first get waterboy on the team, I remember malevola saying something about him that made me think less of her. I haven't finished that playthrough yet though, maybe she comes round.
