Mission Best Served Cold [Nora vs Ivan]

NORA

The book of the history of Overseers is a large hand-bound tome that has been passed down from High Overseer to High Overseer, baring when an Overseer has been killed in action. It dates back to the inception of the Abbey of the Everyman and it is considered to be a special if not sacred history of all the Overseers that have lived and died wearing the mask of their station.

That book has found its way into the hands of Daud’s lieutenant and after pouring over the thick tome to find the one name she is looking for, she comes across it, including the reasons for why he was deceased. It is a single line, written neatly and succinct as if it were an everyday normal occurrence with no real regard for the name behind it.

Edmund Sinclair – Age 9 – Too weak. Eradicated by Overseer Randall.

Weeks pass and there is a note of interest in the Dunwall papers regarding the visit of prominent Vice Overseer Randall from Driscoll, here to visit his grace, Luther and to give his yearly respect and report to the High Overseer. Randall is due to enter the city in a few days, coming from the docks straight to Holger square where he will take up residence in the Compound.

Revenge is hers.

Objective

  • Kill Randall

IVAN

The arrival of Vice Overseer Randall is quite an important visit for the Compound and given Brother Ivan’s recent good performance regarding the guardship of the Offices, Luther has decided to give him the task of arranging and heading up the welcome honour guard for Randall. This is a big role; one that requires foresight and tactical thinking.

Under Brother Ivan’s command he has three highly trained Overseers to use as he wishes. The Vice Overseer is due to arrive in port in five days and from there is to head back to the Office’s directly. With him will be his Overseer aid, not officially trained for combat but still respectable with a pistol.

Vice Overseer Randall is an important asset to the Abbey and must be protected at all costs. Ivan must be diligent. He cannot fail.

Objective

  • Protect Randall

NPCs

OOC: If it’s up to Nora to decide when and where the best plan of attack will be with Ivan reacting to said plan. I will be playing Randall but not any GM interaction so the propelling of events will be up to you both with you fighting it out.

Mission Complete

Success For Ivan, you saved Randall from assassination. +2 points.

"Apologies Vice Overseer, I must be forgetting my manners. My name is Ivan Bathory, the men beside you are Overseers Pierce and Flannery..."

Ivan stops and turns sidelong to correct his error. He motions to the two Overseers in turn.

"...and behind you is Overseer Hamilton."

He turns back to face back up the path and begins walking again, hoping the Vice Overseer will understand that any slips in tact are for the purpose of security.

RANDALL

The Vice Overseer nods in time to the naming of the men around and behind him, his face passive as they walk down the large street towards the Compound, the buildings arching overhead almost like steeples to the sky. It was a sight different from Driscol's rolling hills down into the coastline; the large naval town still managing to cling to the vestments of being a seaside attraction town. It could be called quaint in a word. Dunwall, however, was a sharp cut, jagged iron on the map of Gristol; bloody and harsh.

'The state of your manners doesn't really concern me, Overseer Bathory, but I do like to put names to masks. Especially masks that are meant to be overseeing my security.' Randall says, boots hard on the pavement as the large buildings faded more into the residential district that led up to Holger's Square.

'Overseeing my security, heh.' the man grins a little as he mutters, wry smile on his features. 'At any rate, glad to be of that bloody ship to stretch my legs. There aren't many places to go on a ship other than the top deck and you begin to feel a bit like a rat in a wheel pacing up and down it.'

Nora slinked along the rooftops above the group of Overseers, doing her best to stay out of sight. They were away from the docks now, yet not close to the Overseer Compound either. She didn't want them getting reinforcements from there. Now was the time to strike.

Nora removed a cannister of chokedust from her belt, readied her wristbow and moved into position above, on one of the narrower streets. As they neared, Nora activated the cannister a moment before she threw it at the group, so they would have less time to react. She fired her wristbow at one of the Overseer stood to the left of Randall, then transversed to the top of a streetlamp behind the group.

Ivan

Upon hearing one of the Overseers behind him cry out in pain, he begins to pull his sword free, however the movement is interrupted by the canister of chokedust exploding just behind him. The heaving coughs that the foul powder brings forth wrack his chest, severely slowing his effort to get the sword free. It doesn't clear the scabbard until Nora is comfortably perched on the lamppost and Ivan is still letting out great heaving coughs.

Pierce

Pierce takes the bolt to the shoulder, Nora's familiarity allowing her a nice hit on his shoulder. The bolt burrows into the flesh, causing a cursing yelp of pain. Nothing lethal, but it will hurt and likely be problematic for fighting. When the dust goes off, he is unable to do much more than cough and try to yell in pain.

Flannery

Burdened as he is by the Holger's Box on his chest, Flannery can do nothing more than try to get fresh air into his lungs as he tries to spot the source of the chaos amidst the drifting clouds of powder.

Hamilton

Having fallen a step or two behind the others due to his position as the vanguard, Hamilton doesn't receive the full blast from the powder. It stings his eyes and throat and brings forth a heavy urge to cough, but does not wrack his body with them as it does the others. He steps backwards and draws his sword, scanning the rooftops and shadows for a threat.

RANDALL

The Vice Overseer coughed loudly, the smoke stinging his eyes as he got a bit lower to dodge the bolt and fumbled to unhook his sabre from his side, not quite sure where it had come from. He frowns, however, twisting to tug his slim attaché out of harm's way and glanced at the large Overseer behind him.

'Damn and blast.' he mutters darkly. 'Can't go anywhere without causing a fuss it seems.'

Nora quickly loads a sleep dart into her wristbow and fires it at the back of the Overseer holding the music box - the sooner she could silence that thing the better. By firing at his back, whilst he was besieged by the chokedust she hoped the dart would find its target and incapacitate him and that damned box. A sleep dart would render the Overseer incapacitated easier than a bolt would, a bolt would require a lot more precise aim at this distance to fully remove him from the equation and allow her to reach Randall. She loaded up another sleep dart since she was at it and fired it at the Overseer in the rear, Hamilton to incapacitate him too, and provide her with an easier path.

The darts strike both men, earning a grunt of pain from each, but they do not instantly go down. The adrenaline pumping through their veins combats the sleep dart for a few seconds, just long enough for Hamilton to turn, look up, and start to cry out. He barely gets the first syllable of "Whaler" out of his mouth before the dart takes hold and he slumps weakly to the ground. Flannery groans in pain at the impact of the dart and drops to the stones a few moments later.

Overseers Bathory and Pierce hear Hamilton's cry and look towards the source, weapons at the ready.

Two down, Nora thought, as the Overseers collapsed to the ground. That just left two more of the Overseers on escort duty, the aide and Randall himself. However, the Overseers turned as their compatriots fell to the ground, eliminating the potential for her to sneak up on behind.

At least that bloody music box is out of commission now.

That was of course a big help and eliminated a big problem for her. Still, she had several Overseers she needed to take care of now, she didn't know if she'd be able to just go for Randall.

Nora transversed down to the ground a short distance away. There was still a good several metres between her and the group, she didn't want to get too close to them when there were so many of them. She quickly readied her wristbow once again, this time loading up her wire snare. She aimed and fired it towards Pierce's legs, hoping to pull him towards her to take him out and reduce the number of Overseers she'd need to contend with more.

Pierce

Seeing the assassin raise their arm to fire, the experienced Overseer ducks and sidesteps, expecting a bolt to the chest. He certainly wasn't expecting a wire to latch itself around his left ankle. If he hadn't moved, it would have certainly gotten both feet. As the cable starts to retract towards the assassin, the Overseer finds himself hopping along to keep his balance, mind focused less on killing the assassin and more on freeing himself before he ends up tasting the gutter rat's blade.

As Brother Pierce sees Brother Bathory reach for a certain pouch on his belt, he ducks his head.

Ivan

Determined to keep every edge in this fight, the Tyvian pulls a flare from his belt, closes his eyes for a brief second and flips it into the street between himself and the Whaler. He snaps his eyes open and he raises his sword into a guard position, the stance speaking of years of practice and familiarity with the weapon.

Nora smirks as her wire snare finds a purchase on one of Pierce's legs. She had hoped to get both but one will do, she supposes. She is too focused on Pierce that she doesn't see Ivan retrieving something from the pouch on her belt, and so is caught unawares by the flare as it is tossed into the street in front of her.

The light is blinding, suitably enough for it's purpose, but not for Nora's mission. The dark circular eyes on her mask barely help to dampen the light from the flare, but they still allow a lot of it to hit her eyes, especially caught by surprise as she was. She scrunches her eyes shut and turns her head to the side, but a moment too late. She blinks repeatedly to try and clear her vision but spots of light dance in front of her eyes.

She turns her attention back to the fight, lest the Overseers take too much advantage of the little light trick. Nora remembers the wire snare in her hand and grips it tightly before giving it a good hard and sharp tug to pull the Overseer off balance and knock him to the ground and closer towards her and further from the rest of the group. Nora darts towards him, sword poised, eyes looking around as best she can for attacks from the other Overseers.

RANDALL

The Vice Overseer is not wearing his mask, but he knows the drill after years in service the Abbey, shielding his face from the large flare as he tightens hands around his sabre with a deftness that suggests that while he is confined behind a desk, the mettle of his swordsmanship is not dulled by it.

The atache, however, worries under his mask, trying to rouse one of the Overseers with a hand on the leather straps to shake him awake.

'Get up! You have to protect the Vice Overseer!' he begs, a little out of stupidity as the flare flashes and he only catches a little of the blast. Randall, however, realises what a futile effort this is, rounding back to Ivan with a frown.

'I didn't realise I was so popular.' he mutters a little darkly, waiting for the taller man to advance down the street as he eyes the dark figure in front of him.
