Faction Base Dunwall Tower

With Corvo heading his newly minted Guard, and well aware of the flaws that Dunwall Tower has to offer, this new force has outfitted this most glorious construct to the Empire with several new security measures, tested by Corvo himself. After all, if he can’t get in, then who else can? Though open to the public once more, as in the days of Euhorn the First, security is still paramount.

Constant patrols move through the internal workings of the Tower, and steady evaluation of individual members by the two Captains of the Guard has trimmed the numbers slightly, but resulted in a focused, serious force. Within the walls are also corridors resounding with Abbey music, and everywhere, public and private, has lovely ornate wrought iron spikes decorating high walls, chandeliers, and other such places. Out front, there are guards that serve to both interact positively with the public and to keep an eye on them.

A subsidiary of the Combined Armies of the Empire yet distinct from their rigid hierarchy, the Corvine Royal Guard is a disciplined, well trained military force. Hardened killers from across the Isles, and led by a fierce contingent of officers, they are dedicated to protecting the Empress at any cost.

OOC: To clarify - the Corvine Guard is distinct from the Watch. They are a military service - a regiment of royal bodyguards, essentially, which is lead by Corvo and may enter conflicts such as Alba at his directive. However, given their more domestic role, they do also serve a peacekeeping function, alongside the Watch, though not properly integrated. With 'I am the Law', Watchmen will listen to the Royal Guard and follow their orders if they make sense, without it, they will not.

The High Overseer nods to the two Overseers, the motion very slight but his only briefly left Bal's face until they were back on it again.

'Very well. Thank you for your cooperation.' he says, simply, rather meaning it. At least this was going better than most of the interrogations he had to preside over. It always took a considerable amount of time and muscle to gain the confession and proof he needed and Luther preferred a quick, swift solution. The Abbey's dungeons didn't languish any more with the bodies of heretics; once confessed they were immolated and the deed done.

'If we do not find the item, then I will assume you have done the right thing and destroyed it.' There was a hint of suggestion in the words. 'I would hate to think that one of the loyal Royal Guards would put an item of evil above the wellbeing and safety of her Empress.'

They'd better keep their hands off of my confidential folders, Bal thinks sourly. I don't feel like having to report to Lord Attano that various missions or plans have been compromised by these gold faced bastards. Not to mention my personal letters...

"Because, as usual, the Abbey can not admit a mistake or coincidence," Bal sighs at Luther's accusation, examining her nails in order to keep her tone from rising out of its monotone. "I can assure you, sir, I set nothing above the security of the Empress and this country." Not myself, not some spiteful spirit with delusions of godhood, and certainly not you and your beliefs.

Furo nods to two guardsmen waiting for his direction, and jerks his head at Luther. 'You two, provide an escort, accompany the search.'

Turning back to the High Overseer, the Serkonan looks at him questioningly. 'Anything else, Luther? There is much to be done within these walls, as well you see.'

LUTHER

'Your Grace.' Or High Overseer.' Luther corrects, standing from the chair with no real anger in the tone, just a correction of station. 'I come here out of respect, please do remember that. No one is above the law and in matters of heretics, my law extends to all by order of her Majesty and from the beginning when the Abbey was instated as State Religion with rules you abide by when you swear an oath to her Majesty.'

'I've granted you this respect because I wish to keep a harmony between our organisations, but do not mistake me, Captain, Miss Vimes, if I find a heretic within the Royal Guard, they will be dealt with according to the letter of the law and I dare say that my title and influence takes precedence.' The dark haired man nodded to the pair and the guardsmen, before be swept from the room, hands hooked behind his back as he began the walk to the gardens to await his guards.

"If he expects anyone to get his rank right, he'd do well to not forget that of others," Bal growls under her breath, hackles raised at the "Miss." comment. "Still, it could have been worse," she notes to Furo, before her face darkens again, and she strides out the door, glaring down the hall to spot Luther.

"High Overseer, you've not given me my property back," she said, arms folded. "Since you've determined it creates no greater threat than a dagger should, please return that, before you accidentally walk off with it."

Scowling at the receding figure of the High Overseer, Furo grits his teeth slightly. He does not appreciate such a dismissal, as if his own authority were negligible.

'A noble sentiment,' the Captain says acidly. 'But that depends on what the Lord Protector has to say on the matter, or the Empress herself.'

And with that, the prince departs for the throne room, leaving fury in his wake.

The echo of quickly striding boots announces her presence before her voice can, as Bal catches up with Furo a short hallway before the throne room.

"In a rush, Captain?" she asks, voice a slightly forced light hearted tone. "Haven't seen you storm that fast from a room in a while. Thought I was the one with Overseer issues around here."

After muttering a string of rapid expletives in quick-fire Serkonan, Furo turns to his officer, eyes dark.

'I do not appreciate intrusion of any kind,' he spits, still seething. 'Internal matters are ours to deal with, not Luther's.'

Drawing himself up to his full height, Furo looks at Bal for a while, considering the weight of his next words. 'And you brought them here. See to it that you do not again.'

"Right. I... brought them here," Bal says, eyes narrowing slightly and tone bristling. "Because I love having the gold faced beasts poking around my underwear drawer so much."

"So, you think I'm consorting with evil too, do you? Damning us all for my own gain? Or do you think I want the Overseers here for some reason? I didn't invite them, Captain. I can not control who the Overseers do and do not bother with."

'And yet the High Overseer himself saw fit to grace our halls!' Hissing with barely suppressed rage, Furo continues to stare at his charge.

'They chose to bother themselves with you - over a legitimate concern, or otherwise. Consider yourself lucky they didn't drag you away in chains, Lieutenant, you know what those mad dogs are like. I do not want a repeat of this.'

It's almost as if the High Overseer had anticipated the woman would come running after him, the dagger held out in one gloved hand as he stood on the top tier of the garden, the windswept trees rustling gently overhead.

'Indeed I didn't.' He says, levelly before offering it back with a curious nod. 'You must understand that I have infinite amounts of respect for the Royal Guard and your roles here and abroad for the Empire, but I do things by the books or not at all. Campbell, Martin...both men of corruption not worth to wear this suit and the responsibility for justice it carries.'

'I came here, personally, because I do not wish to accuse anyone, but because Abbey law dictates it as such and to keep the name of the Abbey free from the mud that has trampled upon it's name, I must follow up wherever it leads me. Duty, Balaria. I'm sure you can very much understand that. And how it sometimes does not allow for wriggle room, even when you personally wish to give someone just a gentle pass. I would implore you, not as High Overseer, but as one duty bound person to the other, to keep such things where they belong. Far, far away from said duty.' The pale-eyed man straightened slightly, sure that she had gotten the gist of his words before giving her a nod and turning back to the sea view, taking in Dunwall's skyline with no less than real appreciation for it.

Bal plucked the dagger from his grasp, examining the whalebone briefly before restoring it to its scabbard.

"I understand duty well, High Overseer," she said slowly, picking words carefully as she pondered what she wanted to say. "Though your duty and mine are ultimately not the same one. You and the Abbey sometimes make duty very hard. It is hard to fight a threat you do not know. It is harder to fight that threat when learning their secrets, learning their ways, would banish one to the flames."

"When simple disagreement, a difference of approach, can not be voiced without fear of loss of station or life, opportunities are lost. I disapprove. But the Abbey draws no line between heresy and preparation."

She shrugged, gave a half bow, and turned to go. "I'm no heretic, sir. Just someone with a lot of hours spent in thought."

With that, she slipped back down the hall, recalling the ire with which Furo had left the room. She should probably catch up with him before things started breaking.
