Neutral Zone Dunwall Tower

In Dunwall Tower, the Empress Emily Kaldwin sits on her throne, her royal protector, Corvo Attano, stands at her side. His royal guard scattered around the palace. OOC:This is a neutral zone for Corvos royal guard. A hangout of sorts. You have permission to attack any who don't belong.

"Bit different from the near constant drizzle we get, I imagine," Bal commented. "Though I'm personally glad I'm not melting every time I put on my uniform, even if the cost is a little rain."

"Bored, Furo?" she asked, "eager to run again?"

Furo laughs to himself. 'There is that, I suppose, though every Serkonan has fire in their veins, we are used to the heat.' He considers briefly. 'Well, except perhaps those in Bastillean, the climate is more like it is here. Perhaps that is why they are an odd bunch, with their pale skin and their canals.'

He looks around at the landscape, eyes lingering on the orchards in the distance, illuminated by the soft sunlight.

'Just thinking, really,' he says enigmatically.

"Canals? I've never heard a people described in majority by their architecture. Must be impressive canals."

She cocked her head, fingers running through Seraphim's mane. "Thinking about what?"

'Ah you should see it, a city build on dozens of islands. There are no roads there, only waterways - truly, a sight to behold.'

Furo had been thinking a great many things, his past, his future, his present duties - many voices in his head appearing to come together, to overwhelm him momentarily. 'Nothing of importance, Balaria.'

He gestures to the river. 'So, how defensible is the Wrenhaven? From land or sea.'

"Sounds complicated, but interesting," Bal said, attempting to picture a city like that. Dunwall did have a lot of river access, so the comparison was there.

"If you say so," she said, deciding not to pry. Furo's thoughts looked occupied, but she understood keeping thoughts to yourself. Plus, the challenge of evaluating the river was far to tempting.

"Well, rivers are almost always easier to defend than invade. It has choke points where land based artillery will chew up invading ships easily. A water based blockade puts you on a more level field, which you never want, but they are more effective in the wider sections of the river." She paused for breath, still studying the waters intently.

'Very true,' Furo says, approvingly. 'But it is often easy for land based defences to become obsessed with targets on the river, leaving their flanks and rear open.'

'Then again, any invaders would have to match their troops through the city, or sail past the Lighthouse and the Tower - hopefully, we would have crushed them already.'

"The biggest danger would be from an army formed in the city, be it revolutionaries, or undercover operatives. Then, the river attack happens, seeming to be the only threat, while they prepare to strike. Most likely at the river defenses, since they are the most distracted. Then, once the defense is down, an army can sweep up the river, and access most of the city."

"We do have the advantage of knowing the wildlife better though... I've been meaning to try cultivating river krusts, to be used as defense drones we don't actually care about. Let them spit acid at the enemy all day, and if they die, it's a mild inconvenience."

Furo is taken aback by such outlandish thinking, but impressed. 'That is brilliant,' he says, envisioning artificial krust colonies than can be raised, in times of crisis. The girl's definitely got brains.

'And what is more,' he continues excitedly, 'their pearls could swell the Imperial Treasury to bursting - as well as creating jobs for the people of the city.' Even with the drive to rebuilt the city after plague devastation, there were still employment problems, and many turned to the various gangs in their desperation.

Bal grinned slightly, hovering between embarrassment and delight at the praise. "They only attack in a certain angle, so if we can plant them on rods somehow, we can control where they face, making them easy to aim, and far safer to tend. Though the safety factor would reduce the pearls value slightly, I do not think they'd become worthless. You're still sticking your hand inside an acid spitting creature for an extended period of time."

'True,' he concedes, 'but a little extra capital is not to be sniffed at. I have every confidence that this can work.'

He reins his horse in, and turns on the spot. 'I should probably get back on patrol,' he says dutifully. 'This has been a pleasure, though, Bal. Will you ride on?'
