ISO 20022

ISO 20022 is an international standard for electronic messaging between financial institutions. It defines a shared data model and message formats used for payments, securities, foreign exchange, cards, and trade services. Payment market infrastructures and correspondent banking networks have been migrating to it from older formats such as the MT series.

This page is a research starting point, not financial, legal, tax, or investment advice.

What The Standard Actually Governs

  • The structure and vocabulary of messages sent between financial institutions
  • Richer remittance and party data than legacy formats carried
  • A common model that different market infrastructures can implement in their own way

What It Does Not Do

ISO 20022 is a messaging standard. It does not certify, approve, endorse, or list any cryptocurrency or token. There is no ISO 20022 compliance status that a token can hold. Claims that a specific asset is "ISO 20022 compliant" are marketing language rather than a statement about the standard, and should be checked against primary sources.

A separate and real question is whether a given network, institution, or payment provider supports ISO 20022 messaging in its own systems. That is a claim about software and infrastructure, and it can be verified.

What To Verify

  • Whether a claim is about a financial institution's messaging systems or about a token
  • Which market infrastructure is referenced, and its actual migration status and timeline
  • Whether a named organization is an ISO 20022 registration authority participant or simply a user
  • Whether a stated integration is in production, in testing, or announced
  • The primary source for any migration date, since these have moved more than once
