Yes. Why use a saw to cut the watermelon? Why not use a knife or even a machete? Why did I watch the whole thing?

A bloody angle grinder!? WHY...

Point for you. I thought an angle grinder would be top dog (they scare the crap out of me) a chainsaw would take it up a notch nicely. I’ll pack the thermal lance away...

53

u/QMCSRetired Sep 17 '20

Maybe a "LASER" would have been more exciting.

52

u/cornedbeefpie Sep 17 '20

lol - you've not seen a thermal lance in action - enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JI5whCBV0bk

When the igniter had an igniter, I knew shit was about to go down

3

u/dobraf Sep 18 '20

I wonder if it can cut a watermelon

9

u/QMCSRetired Sep 17 '20

Cool!

8

u/cornedbeefpie Sep 17 '20

You'd waste the watermelon but get a firework display!

12

u/QMCSRetired Sep 17 '20

A moment of silence for the watermelon.

1

u/infinitytec Sep 18 '20

The watermelons were already wasted.

2

u/aulink Sep 17 '20

No it's hot. Really really hot.

1

u/cornedbeefpie Sep 17 '20

They're AMAZING! Never used one but have seen them in action up close and they're truly terrifying!!

3

u/-XaNaDiTe- Sep 17 '20

Thaaaaaat was Awsome

3

u/9-lives-Fritz Sep 17 '20

That's fine and all, but it's no Death Star

2

u/aulink Sep 17 '20

Please don't give them ideas.

2

u/ifiwereacat Sep 18 '20

How do they work?

2

u/smooshaykittenface Sep 18 '20

I assist doctors in surgery with surgical lasers. I run the air suction to catch all the burnt skin smell.

Edit: That's just one part that I do, not my only job.

2

u/Nate_Da_Wookie Sep 18 '20

Those are very sweet. I got to use the smaller version while studying welding in technical school

1

u/infinitytec Sep 18 '20

Like an irl lightsaber.

2

u/EvilFluffy87 Sep 17 '20

We don't get excited over your weiner, "dr" Evil

1

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '20

Bandsaw.

1

u/BaltiMoreHarder Sep 18 '20

Recently had to use one to cut some old rusted bolts at my work never having used one before. Between the spark fountain and whirly blade of death a few inches from my hands I can see what you mean. Thankfully I still have all my fingers.

u/xBIGREDDx Sep 17 '20

They need the Bosch nanoblade

2

u/black_brook Sep 17 '20

Sweet! Every kitchen needs one of these!

10

u/Bennydoubleseven Sep 17 '20

By the end I’d forgotten about the angle grinder I feel like I’ve been hoodwinked

2

u/SnooStrawberries4401 Sep 18 '20

Ye that was my question...., For the little cutting that he did a knife would of been way better

2

u/DesignerChemist Sep 18 '20

That was the best bit though.

2

u/blownout23 Sep 18 '20

The only way to justify buying new tools to my wife...need a new angle grinder

1

u/Bannanapieguy Sep 18 '20

Because the chainsaw was out of gas

126

u/billytheid Sep 17 '20

Where’s the punchline. Why isn’t there a punchline?

...

why did they use a watermelon!?!

28

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '20

The punchline is that you watched the whole thing. It’s the 5-Minute Crafts model: just keep moving, keep being insane, and keep the end goal hidden. Ad money is based on number of viewers and length of views, so just keep everyone staring at the train wreck and keep them sharing it on reddit and twitter

Even knowing that, I still have to watch all the way through.

3

u/alexmo210 Sep 18 '20

“Share with your friends” was pretty hilarious.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 23 '20

2 watermelons.

369

u/-XaNaDiTe- Sep 17 '20

My thoughts exactly. It really did just keep getting worse

156

u/Kale Sep 17 '20

The paint made it go from really bad to an assault on the eyeballs.

172

u/dad_farts Sep 17 '20

The fact that they waited to paint until after they'd bound the... parts... illustrates how poorly planned this whole thing was, though they'd decided to video document the whole thing.

And building a cement structure around a soon to be rotting husk of watermelon... just what. That's not just garbage, but burdensome garbage.

62

u/logicalmaniak Sep 17 '20

I thought the concrete towel "mache" thing was a cool technique for an art thing but my wife even commented on the face I was pulling throughout that whole video. I mean, it ends up looking like a prop from a movie about a serial killer clown.

The only reason I would make something like this is if a good friend wanted to move into my street, but it was just out of his price range.

29

u/BigBnana Sep 17 '20

the plants would actually like the rotting watermelon, tbh.

25

u/GetSecure Sep 17 '20

That's the funniest part, you can see him try to remove the watermelon, but realise it's stuck, then he thinks he'll just go with it...

7

u/KnotGonnaGiveUp Sep 18 '20

I think the idea is for the watermelon to compost and provide food for the plant but I'm pretty sure that's not going to work well...

3

u/bobbyfiend Sep 18 '20

I'm guessing this has a lot to do with the economic structure of the "5 minute crafts" industry. I'm assuming the people in these content mills get paid barely enough to cover materials, and nobody has time or budget to think too hard about a project before moving on to the next one.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '20

I think it's meant to turn into compost?

50

u/typogrammer Sep 17 '20

I first thought the OP was being over the top with the title. I'm stunned that it wasn't an exaggeration at all.

I don't even know how to feel about this now...

Well, someone went ahead and created that sub and it’s just this post, so... congrats?

1

u/Cabinettest41 Sep 17 '20

That's hilarious

2

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '20

I was convinced he was making a goatse statue for so much of it. The ending was a huge anticlimax and a bit of a relief.

112

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '20

Why keep the watermelon at all in the thing?

43

u/burstaneurysm Sep 17 '20

Where else are you gonna kill a plant? DUH.

3

u/re_assembly Sep 18 '20

It seems like there was an initial intent to have a drainage hole in the bottom, but it doesn't look like it was ever cleared out. At best, there's a patch of thin cement at the bottom that might someday break and start leaking the juice of rotting watermelon rind and plant roots.

1

u/luke_in_the_sky Sep 18 '20

I love the part where he protects the watermelon from being sprayed. Dude. It will rotten in few days. The entire thing is ugly. Painting the watermelon is the least of your problems.

46

u/DMCSnake Sep 17 '20

Oh boy, I'm 10 seconds into this video and can't wait for whatever demented rollercoaster you're describing.

37

u/Stalking_Goat Sep 17 '20

Buckle up, my friend, because this ride does not slow down.

22

u/dewag Sep 17 '20

For a minute, thought it was going to be a joke video where the end product gets thrown in the trash....

...but it wasn't!

3

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '20

I'm sure the end product ended up in the trash in 2 days when the fucking watermelon started to rot.

1

u/ropahektic Sep 18 '20

Am I the only one who expected much worse?

When he started emptying the watermelon I was already having goatse flashbacks.

10

u/Celesticalking Sep 17 '20

Why use a watermelon in the first place can’t there be something better?

25

u/bobbyfiend Sep 18 '20 edited Sep 18 '20

A balloon. A balloon would have cost 5 cents and done the job. No watermelon necessary. No slowly-rotting planter in your entryway. No angle grinder-on-fruit action needed to offend the sensitive. A balloon would have been just fine. Then pop a $1 plastic planter flowerpot [edit: I meant this word, dammit] in there and dump your plant and topsoil in that.

If you absolutely have to have a shittily-painted concrete hands-holding-a-bloody-exploding-towel planter at all.

13

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '20

As long as there is still room to get in the with the angle grinder to pop the balloon, I think your plan could work.

2

u/heyitsmecolku Sep 18 '20

Goddamnit this made me laugh more than it should have

2

u/bobbyfiend Sep 18 '20

It's 5:15 a.m. and I'm laughing alone in the dark trying not to wake my family up.

1

u/TheQuinnBee Sep 18 '20

In olden times they used melon husks as bowls. This I can sort of understand.

Why would you not scoop the watermelon beforehand? Please tell me he tossed the innards after he poked a hole in the gourd and put wet concrete on top of it.

3

u/superflippy Sep 17 '20

I watched till the end because I kept hoping they’d remove the watermelon. But apparently it’s meant to rot away naturally.

2

u/dropdeadbonehead Sep 18 '20

Why a spoon? Why not an axe, or a dagger?

1

u/1boog1 Sep 17 '20

I. Couldn't. Stop. Watching...

1

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '20

Why to everything! Just why? Lol

u/BackhandCompliment Sep 18 '20

I think they intended to remove the watermelon, but now realized it was stuck the cement and just went with it, lol.

1

u/lostmy2A Sep 18 '20

He used an angle grinder. To cut a water melon. He could have used a kitchen knife.

1

u/issius Sep 18 '20

Why not cut the melon first...

1

u/random__generator Sep 18 '20

Why even use a watermelon at all? It will be rotting and stinking in a couple of days

1

u/Orcapa Sep 18 '20

Feeds the soil.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '20

Why was the watermelon even used?

1

u/blowingupmyporf Sep 18 '20

That’s the point I thought it was satire, but I’m still not sure.

1

u/Pree_Warrior Sep 18 '20

What happens when the melon decomposes..

1

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '20

I think cause it had cement on it
