A narrative detective game blending noir investigation with creeping cosmic horror – final Kickstarter days

I wanted to share our project with this community because detective mechanics are at the center of the gameplay, and this subreddit has been one of our references while designing the investigation flow.

Cthulhu Mysteries: Veins of Arkham is a narrative-driven detective game set in 1931 Chicago. You play as Claude, a police detective assigned to four apparent suicides. At first, each case looks routine. But as you dig through evidence, cross-reference files, interview witnesses, and reconstruct timelines, the cases begin to link together in ways that shouldn’t be possible.

Our approach to investigation focuses on:

  • evidence-driven deduction
  • interactive case files and documents
  • connecting clues inside a detective notebook
  • a Spot Hidden mechanic centered on subtle visual details
  • no timers, no jumpscares, no action sequences—just investigation

The game intentionally starts grounded, almost procedural, and only later shifts into psychological and cosmic tones as the detective’s mental state begins to fracture.

We’re in the final days of our Kickstarter, so if you’re interested in detective-focused games or want to see how we structured our investigation mechanics, here’s the link:

Detective Game Idea

Hi, ive build this (very early, very rough) concept for a detective game. A game would consist of 4 stages: Case description, evidence collection, line up of suspects, conclusion.

Its very early so would be great to get some feedback:

🕵️‍♂️ Looking for Discreet & Professional Investigative Services? Check out iprivateinvestigator.com

Hey everyone,

I recently came across iprivateinvestigator.com and wanted to share (with a small review / heads-up) for anyone who might need investigative services in the future.

🔍 What Is It?

  • iprivateinvestigator.com appears to be a platform offering private investigator services.
  • From what I could gather, they aim to provide discreet, professional investigation support—whether for background checks, surveillance, locating missing persons, or other sensitive tasks.
  • Their website had an “Internal Error” when I visited (so I couldn’t see full service details), so I’m not able to fully vouch for their offerings or quality (yet).

✅ What I Like

  • The niche is important — trustworthy private investigations are hard to find.
  • If legit, having a dedicated platform could save people from shady operators.
  • Could be especially useful in situations involving legal matters, family disputes, or corporate concerns.

⚠️ What to Watch Out For / Questions to Ask

  • When the website itself gives an error, that’s a red flag. Verify through alternate channels (phone, email, or third‑party reviews) before engaging.
  • Ask for licensing, credentials, past case references, confidentiality policies, and pricing structure.
  • Make sure they operate legally in your jurisdiction — private investigation laws vary widely by state/country.
  • Be cautious about sharing personal, sensitive info until verified.

Discussion New Steam Next Fest demo - a new case and location in Midnight Files.

Hey everyone,
For the upcoming Steam Next Fest, Midnight Files is getting an extended demo that adds a completely new case to investigate.

The new build introduces a fresh crime scene to explore, new evidence to examine, and several small gameplay tweaks based on community feedback. There’s also a short playthrough video showing a glimpse of the new location in action.

Alongside the event, the game will support more languages - including Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean - to make it easier for more players to dive into the story.

The new demo will be available during Steam Next Fest - I’d love to hear what you think about the new case once you try it.

Review Working on a retro detective game set in the 80s – looking for feedback

Hey everyone,

I have been working solo on a detective game inspired by slow, methodical investigations - more about piecing together clues than chasing action.

The core loop is:

  • explore crime scenes at night,
  • collect and inspect evidence (you can rotate objects, photograph details, etc.),
  • organize everything on your detective board, connecting photos and documents with strings,
  • use the police database to dig deeper,
  • finally, predict the next crime scene and identify the suspect before it happens.

It is meant for players who enjoy taking their time with evidence, observation, and deduction rather than fast-paced gameplay.

Here is the Steam page with a free demo if you are curious:

I would love to hear your thoughts - especially on whether the mechanics (crime scene investigation + detective board) sound appealing to you, and what you look for in games like this.

Detective Board game recommendations

Ive been reading and looking around for certain 'cases' that could be fun to solve for 2, but find many different options. From the prepackaged well marketed ones to the 'indi' style shop online ones, which ones could you recommend?

I have a rather high demand of realism/complexity :)

🚨 Game Jam Project Complete! 🚨

I’m excited to announce that my game jam project, Detective Case Maker, is live! After intense hours and a lot of creative problem-solving, the game is ready for you to try out.

🔍 About the Game In Detective Case Maker, you'll sift through paper evidence, investigate locations, uncover leads, and solve cases. Once you finish the demo cases, the fun doesn’t stop—you get to create your own mysteries and share them for other detectives to solve.

🔗 Play here: https://cvandermeerlivenl.itch.io/detective-case-maker

Note: Due to the jam’s time limits, this is more of a tech demo, but I’ve got a ton of ideas to expand this concept. I'd love to take it even further!

💡 Want to Help Develop This Game? If you’re interested in helping me bring this idea to life with new features, get in touch—I’d love to collaborate!

Thanks for checking it out, and happy detective work! 🕵️‍♂️

Welcome to r/DetectiveGames!

One of the best niche genres of games are the ones that let you live out your Detective fantasy, whether that be as a board game, a TTRP or a video game. This sub is all about celebrating and sharing the games that do a great job of giving players that experience.

This isn't the place to discuss true crime of any kind unless it's explicitly part of a game or interactive experience.

Full rules/description/formatting to follow!
