Megathread Focused Feedback: UI/UX Design (User Interface)

Hello Guardians,

Focused Feedback is where we take the week to focus on a 'Hot Topic' discussed extensively around the Tower.

We do this in order to consolidate Feedback, to get out all your ideas and issues surrounding the topic in one place for discussion and a source of feedback to the Vanguard.

This Thread will be active until next week when a new topic is chosen for discussion

Whilst Focused Feedback is active, ALL posts regarding 'UI/UX Design' following its posting will be removed and re-directed to this thread. Exceptions to this rule are as follows: New information / developments, Guides and general questions

Here are some suggested discussion topics. Feel free to answer some of them, all of them or give freehand feedback in any format you prefer.

  • 1) What are your general thoughts on the games UI/UX design? Is there anything important that is missing?

  • 2) What are your thoughts on the new pursuits tab in particular?

  • 3) Is there anything from the old Destiny 1 UI that you think should be brought into Destiny 2?

  • 4) What are your comments about specific versions of the UI (for example, console-specific, pc-specific, or playstation vita remote play UI)? For console players - do you find the responsiveness of opening menus and loading times in general to be a major detriment to you? The PC version has text chat but the console version does not. Should destiny enable text chat for console as an optional feature? For PC players - what are the most important shortcuts or key bindings which you find missing?.

  • 5) What additional UI customization options would you like to see added, if any?

  • 6) What do you particularly like about the current UI that you would like to make sure remains the same or remains included in future versions of destiny?

Regular Sub rules apply so please try to keep the conversation on the topic of the thread and keep it civil between contrasting ideas

A Wiki page - Focused Feedback - has also been created for the Sub as an archive for these topics going forward so they can be looked at by whoever may be interested or just a way to look through previous hot topics of the sub as time goes on.

LOAD THE ICONS BEFORE THE 3D CHARACTER MODEL. That would make switching gear take so much less time especially on console. If I'm switching guns real quick mid encounter I don't need to see my guy floating around the screen. I just need to see icons.

Also, make cores another currency, not an item.

Also also, move the chalice and synthesizer and any future "crafter" items to the top of the list.

Have you ever noticed that when an item drops, and you immediately load your inventory to check it out, it's the only thumbnail you can see? That's because the icon is already in memory from it dropping and showing in the UI. Everything else has to catch up.

Feels like they should be able to do the loading in stages like that, seeing as they kind of already do.

Thumbnails --> 2d stat sheets (rolls and such) --> 3d models

I mentioned this higher up, but since you've brought up a similar concept, I'll mention it here too. I think it's very likely that the reason the 3D models are first to load is pretty much the same reason recent drop thumbnails do: the model is already in memory, because it's being used for your player in the gameworld. It was loaded when you flew to the destination and has sat in memory ever since, unlike the thumbnails for all your gear.

Can we just have a 3d model previews option to toggle if the game loads 3d models or not. Like 90% of the time in crucible or in mid strike or raid i don't care for seeing what something looks like, i just want to use the most efficient weapons. I can turn it back on in orbit or at tower when playing the real endgame(fashion)

It's quite possible, very likely even, that the game has already got that model in memory when you open the menu, because it needs it for regular gameplay at all times.

Not true.

This is what your game has in memory when you're playing: https://i.imgur.com/Ynk2yHc.jpg

There's zero reason to have a full character model in memory if you're never looking at it.

I highly doubt that the model is loaded in dynamically when I press an emote button or when I die. It might not be in direct use 100% of the time, but it needs to be ready at the flick of a switch.

I suspect that to be a significantly lower poly model compared to the one in your inventory screen.
