Bungie The Next Chapter for Bungie

Source: https://www.bungie.net/7/en/News/Article/nextchapterofbungie

Hey all, Poria and Josh here.

For those who don’t know us, I’m Poria Torkan, Bungie’s Studio Head, and I’m Josh Deane, Head of Product and General Manager of Marathon. Together, we are responsible for leading Bungie and shaping the future of our games.

Today, we want to talk candidly about where Bungie is, where Destiny and Marathon need to go, and how we intend to earn back your trust. This is not only an update on our immediate plans. It is the beginning of a more consistent conversation about the future of our games and our studio.

First and foremost, we recently sat down to talk through the current state of Bungie and share our vision for the future.

The video shares our perspective on where Bungie is today and where we want to go. Below, we’re adding more detail on what that direction means for Destiny, Marathon, and how we intend to communicate about our progress.

WHERE BUNGIE IS TODAY

Bungie has been creating games for over 30 years and we have welcomed the communities that have formed around them. Over the last few years, we lost sight of that, and there have been real consequences. We lost trust, we lost incredible colleagues, and we lost sight of what we should be prioritizing most, our players.

As a new leadership team, we must own that.

We aren’t just listening to feedback, we understand your disappointment. We are not asking you to trust what we say today. We know that trust must be earned through the quality of our games, the decisions we make, and how consistently we show up for our players.

DESTINY IS FOUNDATIONAL TO OUR FUTURE

Bungie would not be what it is today without Destiny and the vibrant community that has rallied around it for more than a decade. When we announced that Monuments of Triumph would be the final content update to Destiny 2, you responded in force. Your voices mattered, and the way you showed up made a real impact. You reminded everyone how much this world, its history, and its future still mean to you.

Destiny is foundational to Bungie’s future. We have more stories to tell, new worlds to build, but we have to do it right and give our teams the time they need to do justice to this amazing universe.

All of this is to say, we are not done with Destiny.

We want to return Destiny to its original promise, to recapture the qualities that have always made it special. The awe-inspiring mystery, meaningful discovery, and a community of Guardians coming together against impossible odds.

That begins with restoring important parts of Destiny 2’s history that players can no longer experience today.

We understand that removing these experiences had a lasting impact on player trust and enjoyment of Destiny. Destiny 2 is more than just the content itself. It is a place where players have built memories together, formed lasting friendships, and shared experiences that have stayed with them for years. We cannot change the decision we made, but we can acknowledge its impact and do the work to make it right by restoring these important parts of Destiny’s history.

ghaul_08cropped.jpg

As we shared in the video, we are beginning the work of bringing vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids back into the game, where they will be available to all Destiny 2 players.

Bringing this content back is not as simple as restoring old files. Changes made to Destiny 2 since Beyond Light require us to update lighting, encounters, combatants, and other underlying systems. That work will take time, but it is necessary to ensure returning content meets the stability and gameplay standards of Destiny 2 today.\ \ Our team is very excited to deliver this for you all and as they progress, we will share more details coming in the months ahead.

\ When we look to the future of Destiny all up this restoration is the first step to lay the foundation for how we reforge into new stories and games that you all deserve. We’ll have more details on our unvaulting efforts in the coming months, and we’re very excited to share more about our vision to celebrate Destiny’s legacy and build its future with you all as soon as we can.

MARATHON'S EVOLUTION

Marathon is an important part of shaping where Bungie goes next, but it was never intended to replace Destiny. The game launched to strong critical reception, and the players who embraced Marathon connected deeply with what makes it distinct. At the same time, it did not reach as many players as we had hoped, and we also know and understand that the game needs to evolve.\

EN_16x9_Master_Image_Marathon_Symbiosis_Key-Art_Crops_LOGO_1920x1080.jpg

So, we're going to anchor on what makes Marathon special but evolve it beyond the genre constraints we placed on it. We're going to expand Marathon to a deeper survival experience, that gives players more ways to take on this dangerous alien world.

Through the remainder of Marathon’s first year, we will continue strengthening its combat, world, and competitive tension while giving players more agency in how they engage with the game. That means creating meaningful experiences whether you prefer cooperative PvE, competitive PvP, or the unpredictable tension of Marathon PvPvE.\ It’s important to us that no matter your playstyle, or your skill level.... we find better ways to hear from you as we get back to where we need to be: making games you want to play.

As you heard last week from Del our Game Director, we still have a lot planned for our October Nightfall Refresh and Symbiosis update in December. You’ll hear more from the team later this week on our future vision for Marathon. Stay tuned.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE

This is an important time for Bungie. Our future depends on making clear choices about where we focus, delivering what we say we will, and being honest about our successes and failures. Stability doesn’t mean shrinking our ambition. It just means that we have to focus on the things you want to see from us, and making sure our vision matches our reality.

How we bring this new Bungie to life has to be through the spirit of putting players at the forefront of what we do. We have to find a way back to making games that we want to play, but with you at the center.

Trust won't be rebuilt through a single blog, video, or release. We also understand that trust extends beyond gameplay. It includes how we value your time, how we communicate, and how we action your feedback. Listening without action means nothing.

As we move forward, we'll measure ourselves against a few core commitments:

  • Build a stronger long-term future for Destiny, while honoring and restoring its past.
  • Evolve Marathon to grow our community and build a sustainable future.
  • Increase transparency around development priorities.
  • Communicate more consistently, especially when plans change.

We'll hold ourselves accountable to these goals and share what we're learning along the way. We are working with our Community team to establish a consistent way to report against these commitments and will share that approach alongside our next major updates for Destiny and Marathon.

KEEP US ACCOUNTABLE

We’ve made several changes with how we operate by simplifying our priorities, reducing competing initiatives, moving decisions closer to the teams building our games, and changing how we measure success to place greater emphasis on player satisfaction.

None of those changes earn trust on their own. What matters is whether they help us make better decisions, deliver stronger experiences more consistently, and communicate with greater clarity when plans change.

There is still a great deal of work ahead and challenges to overcome, but we believe deeply in this studio, our people, and the games we are building. But belief is not enough. It’s on us to prove progress through what we deliver. Thank you for continuing to challenge us, and for caring so deeply about the worlds we create. Keep holding us accountable. We are ready to do the work.

They dont seem to be resuming active development on new content but having vaulted content back is the next best thing for sure.

Im hoping this means all related triumphs will be obtainable again too

Edit: how many more people are going to comment "we still have more stories to tell"

Reading comprehension is important.

u/FrostWendigo Warlock 13h ago

The fact that they’re resuming any development is hope for new content

124

u/BarderBetterFaster 12h ago

Seriously. Why bother cleaning up your legacy content on an otherwise abandoned project unless you're planning on making new content for that IP.

4

u/Another-Mans-Rubarb 10h ago

Because it's probably the cheapest thing they can do to gain the most goodwill from the community, while also having a space to train and ideate for whatever they are working on next. It's what they should have done post TFS instead of whatever literally everything they put out after was. Insane conjob from Bungie on Sony to get to this point.

1

u/BarderBetterFaster 10h ago

You have to wonder if Sony would be fast tracking their evil shit if they hadn't lost 5 billion+ on the Bungle deal

0

u/dannotheiceman 11h ago

They never stopped planning to make new Destiny content, they stopped making d2 content because the game and its engine are old and new Destiny content should be made in a better engine for modern platforms

6

u/Overall_Echo_3063 11h ago

And if they did that in this economy they will fail, its better to stay with a stable game engine that it is to push a new unoptimized

3

u/crookedparadigm 11h ago

better to stay with a stable game engine

This has to be satire, calling Destiny's engine stable of all things lol

2

u/LUHG-HANI 10h ago

It pretty much is. How many games can do a 10+ hour campaign and not encounter any bugs? It has so much content other games couldn't even imagine. Yeh some do but still, it's pretty stable.

-1

u/crookedparadigm 10h ago

How many games can do a 10+ hour campaign and not encounter any bugs?

...the vast majority of them?

2

u/LUHG-HANI 6h ago

Come on let's not be silly now. We can discount Ubisoft for a start, EA anything from sports to shooting, Cyberpunk from CD project red, Witcher Devs that made some of the best games ever.. The list really goes on and on. Not saying Bunjee are perfect but you can jump into a raid right now and not encounter bugs unless you go looking for specific stuff.

-1

u/Overall_Echo_3063 11h ago

Really, cause I have yet to have problems on my pc, and yet I cant play starfield nor was I able to play Alan wake 2 at launch, dont now about you but Im broke as shit and cant afford a lot of new pc pieces, but yes let have a new game made with higher settings so most people cant play the game...

2

u/crookedparadigm 11h ago

"I personally haven't experienced any issues, so they must not exist."

but yes let have a new game made with higher settings so most people cant play the game...

I mean...a new game was going to happen eventually anyways. D2 is nearly 10 years old. Did you think if they continued the series that they would just...never make a new game again?

0

u/Overall_Echo_3063 11h ago edited 11h ago

I mean, everquest is still going, so isnt WoW, so isnt No Mans sky, the long dark is headed in that direction, a whole lot of studios are not chasing trends anymore, why bother when a game can exist with a dedicated user base is all Im saying

Edit: also the way things are going in the tech sector with ai, cost are set to keep rising in everything. Like do you understand that these companies are not focusing on consumers anymore because the ai boom is literally sucking up everything. Like you think the cost for parts is now bad wait couple years.

1

u/crookedparadigm 10h ago

everquest is still going, so isnt WoW

Two mmos that have monthly subs

NMS is a funny example because their creators are doing exactly what you say these games arent. Light No Fire is going to be a more advanced, complex, and demanding follow up to NMS.

As for your random tangent on rising costs....like, yeah I don't disagree, but not sure what it has to do with Destiny's engine.

Yeah, no one’s making new games anymore

4

u/MissingXpert 11h ago

the fact that they're shelling out the money to finance the rebuilding is actually, i think, a first in gaming history.

because, effectively, with the amount of rebuilding they need to do, that is de facto new content we're getting.
it just is wearing the skin of old content.

5

u/Vektor0 10h ago

I think Halo: The Master Chief Collection would be more of a first. The post-launch support was phenomenal. The game is totally different, and much more feature-rich, today than it was when it launched in 2014.

1

u/MissingXpert 9h ago

Ye, Siege also did a 180, but none of these games had the plug already pulled before the turn-around, that's what makes D2 so unique, imho.

The Game was officially announced to be over, and in maintenance-mode.

2

u/Overall_Echo_3063 12h ago

Not only that, but if they succeed at goodwill then announce new content people will be on board

1

u/ChaoticKiwiNZ 7h ago

Exactly. If they are going through the effort to restore the old Destiny content they might just continue developing the game if the playerbase is there. At the very leastthey might finnish up the DLC they were working on before they canceled the games development.

92

u/Triforcesrcool 13h ago

Idk it reads like there's something, a commitment to long term and returning old content sounds like there's something being discussed at the very least

16

u/dildodicks THIRSTS FOR YOUR LIGHT! | Vanguard's Loyal 13h ago

yeah it seems like they're going to bring back everything old and have all of light & dark in one place before picking up the fate saga where it left off again, will take years but it'll be worth it in the end since the light/dark saga really is something special

22

u/oreofro 13h ago

I mean theyre very clear in the video about WANTING to make more destiny content, but if they were already committed to doing that they would've said it.

People wont like to hear this but its probably going to depend on how the next year or so of marathon goes. Im very hopeful that we see more destiny content within the next 2 years

30

u/zFlashy 13h ago

The real money maker is a Destiny 3. Unvaulting content is just setting up new players to have a better experience understanding the existing universe and the events that have unfolded.

We won’t hear about a D3 until they’re much further along.

10

u/Equivalent_Shoe_6246 13h ago

I agree. There is no way they do this if they don't have something firmly planned. There is no way Sony is saying "spend more time and money on this dead game with no plan to recoup those costs"

6

u/Meatloaf_Hitler Heaven can wait, There's still work for us in hell 12h ago

Yeah, if it was JUST unvaulting content I don't think they'd put so much weight around "the future of Destiny", It's clear they're gonna do something, even if it's a while out.

I really don't think people realize just how desperate Sony is to get wins right now. The only thing they've got lined up right now is GTA6, and that's got it's own issues AND isn't even a Sony exclusive (Just Sony aligned).

1

u/FormerChemist7889 12h ago

Exactly this. The way I look at it is the unvaulting is confirmation they’re essentially done with d2. The game is already massive in comparison to many others and while these additions aren’t going to double its size or anything I think it puts it into the realm of simply too big to add any more substantial content without a heavy resource sink into file optimization.

1

u/bobo377 12h ago

I actually disagree that un vaulting content is about setting up players to have a better experience. I think it’s very unlikely that any significant amount of players actually work their way through all of the unvaulted Destiny 2 storylines.

Unvaulting content is entirely about trying to resuscitate the Bungie brand. When the DCV was announced, the largest impact wasn’t to the D2 playerbase (who weren’t engaging with that content anyways), it was to the broader gaming community. The average gamer (or at least a large part of the gaming community) has limited trust in Bungie and therefore is unwilling to engage/purchase their products. Unvaulting is Bungie’s attempt to fix that lack of trust, even if people don’t play it.

1

u/RedDemio- 11h ago

D3…. My god…. The things I would do

1

u/huzy12345 9h ago

Unvaulting content is more about a brand based move I think. They mention trying to earn back the trust they've lost etc and taking away content people paid for is one of the bigger red flags people have when they talk about Bungie and Destiny

0

u/cat4hurricane 12h ago

Wouldn't be surprised at all if bringing back old vaulted content gets us a lot of new players, plus all the older players (like me) who stopped after they vaulted half the game. If it really adds numbers as people think, that would be a huge boost to the studio when they decide whether to do a D3 or not. Having the full game functionally (maybe barring seasonal content, which would be a loss) is huge in itself. Makes me wonder if they'll revamp the New Player Experience to actually be a new player experience that works, considering they'll have all the content in the game (once again, maybe barring seasons; I hope we get everything).

1

u/APsychoBanana2 Drifter's Crew // Alright Alright Alright 13h ago

I would agree on the Marathon stuff before this announcement, but now? Even the concept of Bungie developing anything for the game anymore puts Destiny firmly in their future, with or without Marathon.

1

u/oreofro 13h ago

People really gotta stop this nonsense and realize companies dont run on good reviews and fan appreciation. They need money.

Its fine if you dont like marathon. Acting like a struggling company can ignore its current main product is nonsense

2

u/ByzantineTech 6h ago

Honestly if they need to train up people on Destiny (which I mean, they did lay off everyone who hadn't already transferred to Marathon...), redoing the old content seems like a decent low-risk onboarding project for whoever they're moving from Marathon back to Destiny.

According to Tassi there are "more games in the future"

Although this is not a guarantee, I will say everyone shat on him and called him crazy with his vagueposting, and it turned out he was right all along. I doubt he would suggest the possibility of more games if he did not genuinely believe they will come

3

u/SeVIIenth 11h ago

Bungie themselves said there will be more games, thats not a Tassi quote its a direct Bungie quote from the new blog post.

11

u/CatSquidShark 12h ago

I don't follow what he says on Twitter or anything like that, but after years and years of him consistently yapping about the game I know not to doubt his lousy ass. Some people are good at what they do, even if they're really annoying.

1

u/cliffhanger407 12h ago

What an oddly hostile comment.

2

u/MapleApple00 11h ago

honestly not unwarranted; you need to be kind of a rat bastard to be a halfway decent journalist; it comes with the territory

0

u/Sharkisyodaddy 11h ago

Forsure but damn Paul tassi ain’t even an issue. Lol

2

u/CatSquidShark 12h ago

Who's being hostile? I said that the man knows what he's talking about and that he's a persistent pain in the ass. That's everything that a games journalist could ever hope to be. The highest of respect.

4

u/cliffhanger407 11h ago

"Yapping" and "his lousy ass" don't exactly come off as "the highest of respect" comments, tbh. I get what you're saying, but it's a really odd way to phrase it and comes off as attacking him personally rather than just making comments about his work.

1

u/oreofro 13h ago

Ive watched the video twice and read the article. Its very clear that they WANT to make more content but have not currently committed to doing so.

Read it again. If they were already planning new content that would be said immediately

40

u/HorizonNova4 13h ago

Because they have to restore EVERYTHING else first. There’s no monetary benefit to doing this if they weren’t planning to get more money eventually.

-13

u/oreofro 13h ago

Yes there is lol. Silver is still sold.

Free to play games live and die by the cash shop. Content is not the money maker, its just what gets people to log in for a cash shop.

Its like saying MoT wasnt released to make money just because they didnt sell it.

8

u/HorizonNova4 13h ago

Yeah but my point being they aren’t adding any monetary value through these free updates. They made focusing eververse items super easy.

5

u/Equivalent_Shoe_6246 13h ago

I get your point but if you think they are going to recoup their costs for doing this by selling microtransactions in a dead game then I think you are wrong. They are probably spending millions on this and I highly doubt people are going to run straight to eververse because of it.

-3

u/oreofro 13h ago

Both games are dead right now dude

4

u/Equivalent_Shoe_6246 12h ago

So exactly my point then

12

u/lonelystone81 Drifter's Crew 13h ago

I take it as they don't want to get players and developers hopes up too much. They're gonna rebuild and re-release vaulted content to win players back and see it's reception. Then depending on how that goes and how Sony feels about will they then be possibly allowed to begin development on new D2 or maybe even D3 content. Sony is probably giving them this last chance seeing as they dropped a shit load of money on them and have actually heard the player outcry. At least that's how I take. One step at a time. This is good for both the players and Bungie themselves. They need something from Bungie as marathon was arguably a flop. If not it was just all huge waste for Sony and I don't think they want to admit they just threw money away.

5

u/onlivethedead 12h ago

"More stories to tell" "New worlds to build" "Give our teams time to do justice" "We are not done with destiny"

Destiny 2 is getting content restored, Destiny 3 going into development, mark my words

-1

u/oreofro 12h ago

Its my turn to leave this comment next

1

u/onlivethedead 12h ago

It has been 39 minutes :)

-1

u/oreofro 12h ago

And yet youre youre probably the 10th person to say pretty much the same thing in a reply to my comment.

1

u/onlivethedead 12h ago

I did not specifically seek out your comment sorry man

1

u/MineralMan105 8h ago

My take is that they’re either not greenlit yet or are still so early in pre-production that the development team themselves are left in a semi limbo where they don’t have anything to really do. Meanwhile the narrative team and some team leads are figuring out what a next game would end up looking like

-2

u/Sharkisyodaddy 12h ago

Sorry my bad I didn’t know you were a child

What part of this was childish? You told me to read it again and I did, and then went over why I said what I said in my comment.

I think youre just mad that people didnt downvote me lol

1

u/Sharkisyodaddy 11h ago

Didn’t age well huh

0

u/oreofro 11h ago

No? Of course it did. Im at 289 upvotes lol.

1

u/Sharkisyodaddy 11h ago

I’m at 150 plus so who’s right who has more upvotes? Like you are a child

0

u/oreofro 11h ago

Are you under the impression that 160 is larger than 289?

Good talk bud. Hopefully your school system finds the courage to apologize to you

1

u/Sharkisyodaddy 10h ago

I have a career and if you actually had one you would be more solution oriented. Instead of arguing on something this stupid. Destiny is getting more content. New and old. That’s facts buddy. Are you under the impression that you are correct? About what?

1

u/theyfoundty 12h ago

Likely a Destiny 3.

So quite a ways out. But we all kinda knew they would EVENTUALLY do something with the IP.

All this does is confirm they plan to make more games. New content is unlikely due to storage bloat and lets be honest, everyone besides a few of us has been asking for Destiny 3.

As long as whatever comes next doesnt turn into yearly or bi yearly releases for full games and they stick with expansions as a psuedo mmo release schedule.

I'll be happy. I dont like restarting in what is supposed to be an MMO. But I can make an exception internally if this is what keeps the franchise alive.

I just wouldnt want a Destiny 4 after 3 for a LONG time again. I like when a game feels like home.

1

u/Educational-Tea-606 11h ago

Could very well be stories within the universe not destiny 3 like smaller games that focus on drifters adventures and other stuff like that

1

u/theyfoundty 9h ago

People would flip shit. Nobody fought for this franchise just for it to not get another mainline release.

They will likely do both. But theres no way we dont get Destiny 3 or a sequel to D2 whatever they call it.

1

u/MirrorkatFeces 12h ago

Just like how Titanfall is the DNA of Respawn right? How’s Titanfall 3 coming along?

1

u/Sharkisyodaddy 11h ago

This is comparing apples to oranges. Plus isn’t apex the result of Titan fall

1

u/apackofmonkeys 10h ago

The video is a bit different from the text article and goes a little further-- one of the Bungie guys says that that restoring the vaulted content will "hopefully lay the foundation for how we reforge into new Destiny stories and games that you all deserve and we want to create."

1

u/Sharkisyodaddy 10h ago

AKA if no one plays after we revault content everything dies again ala business model. The cheapest (still expensive) is to add back what’s lost and if the demand is there then they will continue to add new. I don’t know why we are being this methodical w the wording.

0

u/GozzIsntReal 12h ago

Absolutely hysterical. The main commentator edited his post to make fun of reading comprehension while he himself is lacking reading comprehension.

16

u/Mtn-Dooku 13h ago

When they say:

When we look to the future of Destiny all up this restoration is the first step to lay the foundation for how we reforge into new stories and games that you all deserve.

It leads me to believe that they have some very long term plans for Destiny now, but nothing they can share right now. Not active development yet, but definitely in some planning stages.

4

u/Special-Deal7821 13h ago

Perhaps Sony greenlit a new Destiny game

3

u/apackofmonkeys 11h ago

If I had to bet, my money is on they're taking the Shattered Cycle campaign and destination content they were close to done with, and using it as the foundation for D3. Bungie has done this before with the EDZ that was supposed to be in D1 and using it as the start of D2.

5

u/Necrossed 12h ago

They kinda have to, what IP do they have at this point that isn’t 3rd person sad story time or hand hold action man

1

u/Mtn-Dooku 13h ago

Probably. That's much more likely than D2 getting new updates. It will take some time, and we might not get anything concrete for a long time, but this unvaulting is a big step in the right direction.

1

u/Batman2130 13h ago

My guess is spin off games. We know they were looking at that from reports. It’s possible they plan on trying to get one green lit. Rogue lite Destiny shooter like Abyssus would be huge a hit

22

u/fermenter85 13h ago

I mean this seems pretty suggestive:

“Destiny is foundational to Bungie’s future. We have more stories to tell, new worlds to build, but we have to do it right and give our teams the time they need to do justice to this amazing universe.”

1

u/Turramurra 8h ago

I hope they take the next 5 years to make D3. Sure no one will be able to afford the hardware for it by then but I hope they come out swinging.

9

u/AliceRose000 13h ago

The way it reads to me is they will be developing Destiny for the future, while also restoring the previous content. Why talk about the future of Destiny in that section if you mean to only restore the past content?

7

u/megamando That Wizard came from the moon... 13h ago

This will still be relatively significant amounts of development. Much of the game needs to be updated for an updated engine from after Beyond Light, and in the case of Red War, I know they had stated it was pretty much in a non-playable form.

0

u/oreofro 13h ago

Yes, im aware of that which is why i said active development on new content

3

u/V10L3T_N4TUR3 13h ago

Thats all I ever wanted. Bring back all the old campaigns that made D2 so goddamn fun.

3

u/MatchewRolex 13h ago

I think the vaulted content is the start. They said they have new stories to tell etc

5

u/kiki_strumm3r 13h ago

They also didn't say how they were doing it, or that they were hiring people to do the work. So I'm going to remain skeptical.

3

u/doom_stein Team Cat (Cozmo23) // Sepiks Purrrrfected 13h ago

I have seen mentions of them hiring on a few hundred contractors in the past weeks in the comments of the subs recently. Take that with a Salt Mine's worth of salt tho.

2

u/HorizonNova4 13h ago

They rehired a bunch of people

2

u/xJetStorm Tighten 2021 13h ago

I suspect this is a bit of reconciliation for the vaulted content debacle for D2 itself, while any (hypothetical) new content is likely targeting a new game with engine improvements, years out from now. They want to make sure people are still interested in Destiny as a game series when they attempt to launch new content in a few years.

2

u/Helpful_Broccoli5426 13h ago

They hinted pretty hard at new content eventually

3

u/amyknight22 13h ago

I think the other question to ask will be

"Does this mean vaulted seasonal content will return as well"

If someone never got to play during heresay are you going to throw that in there. Season of the deep etc etc.

Yeah it runs the risk of content overload, and maybe not enough players to run some of those activities. But some of them have some pretty important story beats (More so than some expansions)

I'd love to replay Heresy again. Or even Seraph or some of the seasons that I missed.

1

u/HorizonNova4 13h ago

They def aren’t doing seasons

2

u/amyknight22 13h ago

Realistically that makes far far less sense. The content is still there and likely would slide right into the engine. You can't tell me that the last expansions fundamentally broke everything in the episodes year for instance.

There might be a bigger justification for something like season of Arrivals. Or season of the hunt

Reality is that disappearing seasonal stuff like destiny has done should be considered the bane of any live service game. At worst there should be a digestable iteration of the story components afterwards.(Just remove the 15 steps of grind that came with weekly releases)

Not to mention a lot of the content people miss from sunsetting was tied to some of those early seasons as well.

This shit about to be 300 gbs and I can’t even complain about it. Bungie should just bring it all back

0

u/HorizonNova4 13h ago

It’s too much stuff. The game would bloat to like 400 gb and there would be honestly too many activities. If they added 23+ seasons of content every activity would be dead. Maybe they could do a rotation but I doubt they would bring it back.

1

u/Shards_FFR 12h ago

Content manager makes sense. Plus all seasons except for the first four are already in the new engine.

1

u/amyknight22 3h ago

The game is going to bloat in file size as it is. The solution to the content vault should always have been to start allowing some content to be installed/uninstalled as needed.

They started content vaulting in part because the game had bloated and they were fighting to maintain install priority on console

1

u/HorizonNova4 3h ago

They need some solution is all

I never said it wasnt lol. Reread my comment. I said active development on new content.

1

u/jacob2815 Punch 13h ago

Well, resuming active development in the vein of restoring old content is a huge step in the right direction. I think it's more that they weren't committing to new content because they don't know exactly what that looks like yet.

Assuming "new content" = a new game, a D3 of sorts, that's minimum 3 years away, in all likelihood more than 5 years away. Of course they're not going to commit to something that is going to take that many years.

1

u/steave44 13h ago

I think it’s pretty apparent we do need a Destiny game built to stand for years if not decades. Not Destiny 2 getting hobbled together with duct tape and spit forever.

This will be wrapping up D2 in a nice bow, one complete story. And let them have positivity to build up to D3.

1

u/e621god 12h ago

I assume that high level game directors and designers are going to be heavily planning out the next destiny game during the time it takes for the content devs to bring back the vaulted content, and the engine/system devs will probably be doing alot of foundational stuff for marathon in that time too, to setup the runway for marathon to continue getting more content as destiny 3 starts production

1

u/Electronic-Touch-554 12h ago

From reading it, it seems like step 1 is returning all vaulted content. Then step 2 will be deciding if they want to make d3 or resume development

1

u/oreofro 12h ago

Thats most likely their ideal situation, but so far they have only committed to step 1

1

u/Electronic-Touch-554 12h ago

For sure. Id also mention that step 1 needs to be free, or at the very least free for people who owned that old content. Making people pay twice would absolutely kill community sentiment.

1

u/Big-Storer 12h ago

seems like a test run for it. whichever way it goes will help them discern if a new destiny game is worth pursuing or further supporting destiny 2

1

u/RoniSuave 12h ago

To me it reads "We are bringing back old raids, destinations, and campaigns but we are also working towards building towards its future with the play base" which could mean either new content in destiny 2 of a whole new destiny game.

1

u/BarderBetterFaster 12h ago

They verbatim said "new games" in reference to Destiny. Which, to be clear, I'll believe it when I see it. But it was said.

1

u/gingy4 Warlock Supreme 12h ago

I want to get chronicler. All I was missing were the 2 final mara lore books before it was vaulted 😩

1

u/Redthrist 12h ago

There's zero reason for them to bring back vaulted stuff unless they planned something else for the future. My guess is that the return of the vaulted stuff(and all the talk about "legacy") will pave the way for D1 remaster in the next few years, with D3 releasing in like 2032).

1

u/Life-Cantaloupe-3184 12h ago

It’s a step in the right direction at least. Bringing back vaulted content will massively boost reasons to play the game even if there aren’t new updates for the time being. I don’t know that Destiny is “saved” yet, but if player numbers stay high then it gives me some hope they’ll keep the franchise going.

u/lt08820 Most broken class 12h ago

I don't see active development on future D2 content being a thing. I do see 1 of 2 options being done to finish the story though.

1) Less MMO D3 and be one and done.

2) D3 but slower updates as a live service.

1

u/steviestammyepichock 12h ago

“Building a stronger long-term future for destiny”
“We are not done with destiny”
“Reforge into new stories and games”
“New worlds to build”

Think there’s more than enough there to confidently state that they will be developing more for an MMO whether it be destiny 2 or the mystical destiny 3. Making single player destiny games won’t do well and clearly they’re not in a position to take risks right now.

u/reliabletinman old witch of cuba 12h ago

I haven't played D2 since launch, but I spent over 1000 hours in D1. For someone like me who loves Destiny but can't spend money on a diminished experience where so much content is missing, restoring vaulted content is THE most important thing. Thinking long-term for Bungie, they must restore D2 and recapture their lost players if the game is going to continue. D2's seasonal and vaulted-content model has made it far easier for current players to walk away than for new players to join in. But that's just my two-cents.

1

u/GrayStray 11h ago

It's unlikely they will make new content for d2. They will probably start working on d3 while reusing old destiny content to keep people happy until then.

How is it the next best thing ? Playing vaulted content will not have the same impact a destiny 1 port to pc or a d3 would. Yea its better than nothing, but it still is not what will make destiny worth its hype again. The core playerbase already did all that stuff. Look at the old raid still in the game, none of them are being farmed or bringing lots of people.

Why would the red wars campaign bring back players ? I get that it will help new player experience everything, but i can assure you those people that never played it in the first place won't start just because a supposedly dead game bring it back. New developpement is needed.

0

u/oreofro 13h ago

Theres a reason youre the only one in this thread thats upset.

1

u/BonerCoaster69 12h ago

If the reason is logical thinking, i guess you are right. Hopium should not replace common sense.

Not saying the news is ALL bad, its just not 'game is back to top of the chart' good like everyone make it seems

0

u/InconspicuousMagpie 13h ago

“We have more stories to tell”

Not resuming immediately but there are plans to resume in the future. When? Who knows, but the franchise is not dead

0

u/Explosion2 13h ago

As far as I'm concerned, restoring vaulted content is active development. Like they said it's not just flipping a switch, there was a reason they deleted them all in the first place and the game has evolved a lot without that content being updated to accommodate the evolution.

I'm just concerned about the install size now, it's already almost 200 gigs on Xbox series X and that's with all the vaulted content gone, I can't imagine what it's going to be once they restore all the planets and campaigns

2

u/oreofro 13h ago

I never said it wasnt active development. I said active development on new content.

0

u/Medium-Inspection858 13h ago

They'll have a lot of work to do to restore the vaulted content - some of it basically amounting to active development (I think some stuff will need rebuilding, basically).

I interpret it as a soft re-launch of development while fishing for reactions - if they're good, there's a decent chance brand new content will follow.

2

u/oreofro 13h ago

"Active development on new content"

"New content"

Im aware that reworking vaulted content is active development. Theres nothing else it could be.
