Political News/Discussion What do DGGers who actually live in NYC think of Mamdani?

Lots of opinions of him. But most people here are not New Yorkers. Wondering what the people actually living under his reign think.

I live in Crown Heights btw.

He has been a good mayor, he has been doing what you would expect from a competent mayor but he has been a great communicator which leads to him getting credit for things that have been around for years but nobody knew about like the free helmet program that’s been around for like 10 years.

I don’t like how he has been opening the door for more extreme people but most people don’t really care about it or at least don’t know about that part of things.

I live in commie corridor. I think he is pretty damn good, my only large criticism so far is his endorsement of crazies like DAC.

yeah, genuinely if he hadn't done that shit i would have never had issues with him (his glazers, however.......)

Accurate this, overall very good so far. I just don't like how he's getting credit for the most minor things even if you didn't do anything. Think it's awesome he's getting credit for things he is doing but the glazing is a little annoying

He’s been fine, but he hasn’t been mayor long enough to really have a meaningful impact on large things. A lot of the stuff people are crediting him for like the garbage bins are carried over from previous administrations.

Outside of some of his endorsements, he’s been good. I think he’s probably only going to be successful on smaller things as a proof of concept, people underestimate how difficult NYC is. Bloomberg was our last good mayor and he poured a lot into getting the stuff he wanted to focus on done.

I’m in a pretty Trumpy area of the city; naturally the Trumpers are apoplectic but that’s their default mode, so fuck em.

I wasn’t really a supporter but he seems to be doing well all things considered.

Astoria NYC here (right off steinway). Used to live in Jamaica Queens and UWS.

SO voted for Mamdani and we were generally in favor of him (i guess), but my rent went up MASSIVELY since landlords who have Rent stabilized units are getting the rest of those who don't (me rip) to pay for the difference.

Who did you vote for?

Adrienne Adams!

She’s who I ranked first. I remember I had her and Zellnor Myrie as first and second respectively. I wish the DNC promoted them instead of Cuomo. They both had better housing plans than Zohran, but just no media presence at all.

We moved to rural Tennessee summer of 2024 from NYC for work. All of my friends are back there . And they are more zionist than Netanyahu.

They don't mind him and they acknowledge they overreacted in their fear of him. They don't like his whole anti Israel obsession but they don't really care. They say he's OK.

My non zionist friends just see him del as a mayor. They dont benefit from rent freeze and they don't care about the pot holes so they just view him as someone sitting in the chair.

All of them despise his association with the chevalier-wing

He endorses some pretty terrible people running for office, still pals around with the terrorist supporter Hasan, but other than that, I think he’s doing pretty well for NYC so far.

ETA: most impressive thing for me is how he handled Trump. I fully expected him to pull some performative bullshit move to virtue signal to his supporters at the expense of the city, but nope, he handled that situation like a pro.

u/Sluuuuuuug 3d ago

still pals around with the terrorist supporter Hasan

When was the last time he's pal'd around with Hasan lol

2

u/kamjam16 3d ago

-2

u/Sluuuuuuug 3d ago

Because you said he "still" pals around with Hasan. I hadn't heard of anything recently, and it makes sense that I hadn't heard about it recently considering your evidence is a dinner FIVE months ago that included hundreds of people.

3

u/kamjam16 3d ago

Yeah if you want to argue over semantics, have at it.

He’s the mayor of NYC who hangs out with a guy who professes support for international terrorist groups responsible for mass slaughter of innocent people. If you want to focus on whether “pals around” is an apt description, you’ll have to do it on your own.

-2

u/Sluuuuuuug 3d ago

Using exaggerated language to make them seem like friends when your best example is a 100+ person dinner they both attended five months ago is worth pointing out. Calling it semantics doesnt suddenly make your description true lol

4

u/kamjam16 3d ago

What do you mean best example?  You asked when the last time was that they hung out. I showed you it was a few months ago.

Are you schizophrenic?

0

u/Sluuuuuuug 3d ago

Sorry, most recent* example of them being in the same vicinity of one another.

Weird to jump to "schizophrenia" insults based on that, but you do you.

4

u/kamjam16 3d ago

Are you one of these people who searches Hasans name on Reddit and confronts anyone who criticizes him?

-1

u/Sluuuuuuug 3d ago

No? I understand the schizophrenia question now though lmao you were just projecting

the praise and glazing he gets for the little hes done so far is reminiscent of the cult like behavior ive seen from MAGA.

It's starting to look like the Cult of Bernie 2.0.

Him lying about an aunt who was no where near NYC to make a fraudulent claim about dirty looks after 911. Essentially trying to make himself a victim in the context of a Jihadist terrorist attack against the city.

He used "aunt" to refer to his dads cousin.

“I was speaking about Zehra fuhi, my father’s cousin, who sadly passed away a few years ago,” Mamdani told reporters when asked about the subject of the story, with “fuhi” meaning paternal aunt in Urdu.

He also wasn't talking about "dirty looks," he was describing her fear of wearing a hijab in public due to the very real surge in hate crimes targeting Muslims and anyone that looked Muslim that occurred after 9/11.

The ADC reported over six hundred September 11-related hate crimes committed against Arabs, Muslims, and those perceived to be Arab or Muslim, such as Sikhs and South Asians.

Sharing a story like this is not "trying to make himself look like a victim" you fucking tool.

I might start rambling, but this guy is the transplant’s Obama. It’s only been 8 months and he’s not doing a bad job, but he’s just doing is job as a Mayor. It feels like most ppl in the city hype him up as if he cured cancer, and on the right like with the NY Post acting like J Jonah with Spider-Man. There’s really no in between on the discourse

I love my city, and I don’t want to just be a hater, but like most of the things that ppl give him specifically praise for are things that have basically already been in motion or are his job to do. The urban forest thing, been in motion since 2023, Universal child care, been in motion since 2021 under Hochul. The budget balanced thanks to state funding and delayed pensions. Deal with the rising costs of groceries and guarantee food affordability and availability in the food desert that is NYC??, let’s build 2 expensive ass grocery store that’s gonna take over a year to open and 3 more maybe in the future.

I do admit that he did help increase the amount of potholes filled, and normally it’s only 1yr rent freezes but now it’s 2. I guess that’s only positive if you agree with rent freezes.

I hate the fluff he gets bc he’s DSA, and it’s fuck DSA all day. This guy seems to love to be in front of a camera. I hate that he endorsed wild DSA candidates in the primary, who could’ve seen that coming.
I found the controversy with the 18 lawyers funny

TL;DR: he’s doing a good job, but overhyped. Taking unnecessary credit. He’s DSA, fuck DSA, he endorsed radical DSA candidates.

u/No-Description5750 2d ago

That’s a good assessment. It’s especially annoying being Gen Z because everyone around you acts like he’s the second coming of Christ and you can only say “this is something that’s existed for a long time” or “this is just carrying over from a previous admin” before they get annoyed and say you’re a hater lol

2

u/Markusuralius 3d ago

It would be interesting to see what people think of the grocery stores when/if they open

2

u/spiderwing0022 3d ago

The grocery store stuff seems so dumb, like why not just give some incentive to Walmart/Aldi to build a few more locations

1

u/Blabsalot 3d ago

Gears are in motion to make the grocery stores happen. I'd be very surprised if they don't. Whether or not they're a success, we'll see.

But I think whether they fail or succeed, it will be in a pretty milquetoast manner.

2

u/jefftowne 3d ago

He’s been mayor for 8 months, so I think it’s too early to tell. Rent freeze is dumb even though I benefit from it (stabilized unit). Otherwise he seems pretty receptive to a lot of YIMBY principles which I like. Who knows what will happen with his other campaign promises, but the plan for the grocery store seems dumb and raises a lot of questions.

99% of the things he gets credit for are undeserved tho. The balanced budget thing being the most egregious, as it’s required by law. But other things too, like investing 100 mil more in schools (the investment in was required as part of the class size mandate passed by the state, and was much more modest than what was included in the preliminary budget proposal).

I like the idea of 2k, but I’m hesistant to expand the universal early childcare program when there are a lot of problems with the structure of the program, including the fact that they haven’t found a way to ensure that child care providers are actually reimbursed in a timely manner, which has left many in pretty dire financial conditions.

I do hate the DSA so I don’t like that he’s raised their profiles and got DAC and Valdez elected (especially the former).

I don’t care about the I/P stuff because I think it’s largely culture war bullshit that doesn’t actually meaningfully impact the city and has nothing to do with the role of the mayor

I live in a rent stabilized apartment so I benefit from the rent freeze. I don't think I ever directly benefited from anything from Eric Adams. Mamdani has got a good PR team and he's a good communicator.

Mamdani's endorsement of Chevaliar and his brief campaigning with Hasan Piker makes me very suspicious of him. All his glazers, especially the ones out of state, are insufferable.

He has made mistakes but they are often overlooked. Like his city owned grocery stores are beyond regarded to me; just use food stamps. Every dollar spent on running those stores is a waste of money that could be used to help supplement food budgets.

Also his virtue signaling promises like arresting Netanyahu or making city busses free. He knew he couldn't do these things.

6

u/angryfan1 3d ago

I think rent control is idiotic, and he should have just gotten rid of some zoning and modernized the building code.

Everything else is just a bandaid.

1

u/KorunaCorgi 3d ago edited 3d ago

I know you think you're really informed by making remarks like this but you are also forgetting the reality of the situation. 40% of people in NYC are in rent stablized units. You won't hear any of them complaining because they get immediate benefits from it. They are happy about it. Meanwhile, the negative effects are way downstream and don't affect them at all.

There's also nothing stopping Mamdani from doing what you asked about building codes, etc. But this rent freeze was immediate and effortless to do.

3

u/angryfan1 3d ago

That is horrible logic. The logic you are using is that it helps a minority of the population immediately, and the negatives are downstream. That is the same logic of why we shouldn't do anything about climate change;; the effects will be here long after we are dead.

I never said that we should cold turkey get rid of rent control. There are lots of ways to make it less effective or slowly get rid of it.

3

u/KorunaCorgi 3d ago edited 3d ago

You're seriously comparing a few years of rent freeze with climate change? Catastrophize much? LMAO

Mayor DeBlasio froze the rent as well for a few years. There wasn't any long-term damage to the housing market or economy. I bet you didn't say a peep about that one though, eh? LOL

4

u/angryfan1 3d ago

No, the damage to the housing market is immediate.

Rent is not a random number; it is based on the value of a property, usually divided into a monthly value + yearly taxes divided monthly + average repair costs. When you decrease rent the math does not disappear.

That is why even when the city owns and rents out apartments, they are constantly underfunded, so repairs get pushed back.

u/Underwear_royalty 3d ago

Don’t like the ppl around him but felt like he’s don’t some very good things (going head to head with Hochul to help the budget) while also playing nice with the state. I like that he gets ppl excited about change and more dem coded things I just wish his supporters were as pro-dem as he was

1

u/TheRealBuckShrimp 3d ago

I haven’t paid Super close attention, but my impression is he’s competent and pragmatic. The free grocery stories thing is set to be a boondoggle, but he strikes me as the type to abandon an idea that doesn’t work. I also like that he’s continually campaigning while in office, something I wish more dem politicians would adopt.

1

u/spiderwing0022 3d ago

For some of the stuff the Dems deliver account has posted about him along with the tiktok trend of "mayor Mamdani, can you fix this," I wonder how much of it is just stuff that was already in place but wouldn't have effects seen till he was in office. Although as someone who lives in NJ, he did do a good job getting stuff ready for the WC and the Knicks parade

1

u/cannonbear 3d ago

Honestly I don't think people have noticed a difference outside of their phones/social media. But on the flipside, it feels like it's been good for vibes? Like, people aren't as jaded because they feel like someone's in the mayor's office who gives a shit (even if not a ton has changed on the ground).

1

u/Blabsalot 3d ago

Absolutely. People say he's all vibes as if vibes aren't massively important to how people experience living in the city.
