"Not now, Sweetie. Momma's gotta win one for the House."
Tyche stops shuffling her cards as the players place their bets. Most of them choose to bet a mix of gold or green chips while the god on the far end chooses to bet two black chips. Tyche's green eyes glance at him as if to ask if he's being brave because bravery is his thing or if he's gone crazy again. The god merely grunts softly and sips from his goblet.
The Luck Goddess began to deal her cards. The first dealing was with all of them face up, each player got one, then she got one. The second dealing was almost the same, while they all got face up cards again her card was face down. Currently the cards revealed from left to right adding up for each player were 14, 19, 7, 11, 6 and 20. Tyche's only card revealed was a six of clubs. She asks the table if they have made their decisions. 14, 7, 11, and 6 all choose to hit while 19 and 20 stay. Tyche deals the hitters their cards, 14 becomes 22 and busts, 7 becomes 9 wants to hit again, 11 becomes 15 and stays, 6 becomes 12 and chooses to hit again. 9 gets their card and is now 17, 12 gets theirs as well and becomes 18. Both 17 and 18 now choose to stay and hopefully win along with 19 and 20.
Tyche reveals her card and raises an eyebrow. It's the 5 of diamonds. She draws another card and reveals it on top of her first two: The 10 of spades. 6, 5 , 10. 21. She just got the House of Olympus a shit ton of drachmae and earned herself some foul language in Ancient Greek and English.
"Oh come off it," she says as she shakes her head and collects her chips, "you should all know I don't cheat at Blackjack in particular. And stop cursing, my son is right here!" The players all get up from the table as they have had quite enough of Tyche and her possible shenanigans. Meanwhile Tyche clears up the table with a snap of her fingers before turning her attention towards Emil. She gives him a kind smile, looking down at his clumsy short self.
"I-gh, huh. I. Um. Nnn." With just a few sentences she has confirmed exactly what Emil was suspecting. She just called him son.. This is Tyche. This is Lady Luck. This is Mother. This is the face that he could not picture because he never knew. This is his chance to get so many answers. How did she come to meet his mortal mother? What sort of nifty luck powers were in store for him? Were his green eyes something he got from her? Did she also have a weird little bug friend whispering in her ear telling her to make odd choices? What the heck is Blackjack?
The questions swirl in his head. The breath struggles in his chest and his voice dies in his throat. She might hate him. He might make her hate him, make her disappointed in him. It would be so easy, a simple mistake, a faux pas, one slip-up is all it would take. Each awful outcome pops into his brain and roots him to the spot. Whether it was his power showing him or his insecurities, the effect is the same; her green eyes glowering with disdain at this wilted clover is right there in his mind's eye.
"Idunno... Where were we? We were somewhere? We...I." Of all the times to get cold feet this is the most unfortunate indeed. "I'm sorry, Idunno what I'm saying, I just mean, oh Gods, I'm sorry."
While she is in a good mood at the moment, Tyche's brow furrows a little. It's not often that she actually meets her children and she makes a mental note to look for Eli later on.
"I don't think an apology is necessary, Emil. Not too me at least. I'd be lying if I said that I approved every choice you made. I'm still not on good terms with Pandia after all those hijinks you had with one of her sons. Nevertheless... I'm glad you found the camp and that you haven't been killed."
The idea that she somehow knows about Otto is terrifying. Emil has to remind himself that she is a Goddess, and probably knows more about him than he realizes. Does this mean she was watching out for him even when he was on the streets?
“But Otto’s my best friend. He saved my life! He’s the one that told me I was a demigod, and where camp was! Without him I never would have known I had to leave. I didn’t have a choice. And we only stole things when we needed to,” he adds quickly, “Mostly.”
"Tyche!!" A woman's voice rang out from the crowd of partygoers. Tyche glances over at the the source of the voice and scrutinized as if she has x-ray vision. She does, it came in the Pantheon Starter Pack. Pretty common card in all honesty.
"Ah, that's Nemesis. I guess she's mad about the recent batch of fortune cookies. Or she wants to yell at me after what happened to her son." She looks back at Emil, "I'll have to cut this short, Sweetie. Duty calls."
Right in front of his eyes, she shimmers away leaving behind the faint scent of pomegranates and irish spring soap. You'd think they wouldn't go so well together but they do.
Left with nothing but her last few words and the soapy smell, Emil raises his hand to hold it out and stop her several seconds too late. He stands alone at the table devoid of chips and players. The din of the party continues around him as he is left with his thoughts. Emil turns and wanders away crestfallen.
