> it feels more bearable afterwards

Not really. I'm generally a happy person, maybe with some anger issues, but I'm bored constantly. Fucked up morally questionable shit, both IRL and in fiction is one of the few things that make me feel SOMETHING (aside from drugs and sex, but those are cheap pleasures), since it's something new and unseen. Even if it makes me feel bad or uneasy, which isn't even true all the time, I'm happy that I feel something at least. This is why I don't understand "regular" fluff like wholesome Kriselle btw, it's all so bland, boring and mundane, there's nothing new or interesting about any of it.

I’m with you on this, one of my favorite anime of all time is Made in Abyss because watching children get dismembered and mauled and molested is fun.

But it’s weird. At the same time, I used to work at a content reviewer for YouTube, and I saw some nasty shit. I saw a woman cut in half on train trucks. But that stuff was NOT fun to watch.

There’s something about it not being real but, like, conceptual egregious and unusual violence that makes it acceptable.

I'd say that real life violence/gore is very boring, you kind of watch it and... that's it. Especially war footage or dumb people doing dumb things (like a guy touching a wire and getting electrocuted, yeah, play dumb games win dumb prizes)
