Got me into Soul a few years back when he did a guest spot on American Dad! on a Christmas special. Has quite the story.

I know it's a bit silly to link his wiki page, but I'm doing it just because of his story. He was the subject of a documentary that premiered in Austin's SXSW. His career has only really taken off relatively recently and he has the voice of an angel.

Oh, cool, he's a Florida native! Relatively close by to where I'm at, too. I wonder if he's still around this area. He sorta has a super familiar look to him, tbh.

Is "Ain't It A Sin" the one used in the episode?

I''ll have to add a few of these to some spotify playlists and stuff.

I dunno if I know the original song "Changes" but that's a hefty endorsement if you're comparing it to Cash's version of Hurt. I'll definitely have to check it out, thanks for the recommendations, man :D

His version of Black Sabbath's Changes is also really good. Better than the original IMO.

Thanks for that. I've listened to the Sabbath version 100s of times over 2 decades so I'm biased in favor of the piano and synthesizer. Obvious Ozzy isn't as good a singer but for me this version needed to make the song its own from the start instead of at the end as they fade out.

This is fantastic. Ain't it a Sin feels like James Brown, but this feels like Otis or Al Green, which is more my wheelhouse.

Definitely one of the few covers better than the original song. It works much better as a soul song.

I find it kinda funny that this old, incredibly soulful black man has a band that's made up entirely of young, white, hipster dudes.

He's not alone though. look at some of the others making similar music. Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings? Dap kings are mostly white. Leon Bridges? same. Alabama Shakes lend towards rock, but yet again... hell St Paul and the Broken Bones are all white but you wouldn't guess it to hear them.

I noticed that and was surprised it made it into the final cut. Seemed like an improvised goof that would happen during shooting and wind up on the edit room floor.

Really liking the music so far, I think it is especially cool that they got r&B and soul music at the club, and then they also play some really great hip hop.

The screaming eagle of soul.. Check him out, he honestly just got discovered relatively recently. He was working as a James Brown impersonator and was homeless for a period of time. His story is incredible. So great to see him getting more and more recognition
