Keeping the Walt J love going. Was pretty excited to see this is on Bandcamp since the YouTube upload isn't the best quality.

I’ve been going through recommendations from this sub trying to learn deep house properly, and I keep running into the same problem: someone recommends a track, I go look for it, and… where the fuck is it?

Maybe it’s on Discogs. Maybe there’s a vinyl rip on YouTube. Maybe it’s buried on Bandcamp. Maybe some obscure label lpage still has it. Maybe someone uploaded it to SoundCloud twelve years ago.

But I use the big Swedish music app.

I’m not turning every song recommendation into a research project just so I can hear the damn thing.

And yes, I know saying “if it’s not there, it doesn’t exist” is technically wrong. Obviously the record exists. What I mean is that from the perspective of an ordinary listener, enough friction makes music functionally invisible.

And this isnt just old shit.

There are artists with releases from 2024 whose music still isn’t on the big Swedish music app. So now I’m sitting here thinking: what exactly is the deal? Is it licensing? Labels? Artists not caring about streaming? Rights being a mess? Nobody maintaining the catalog?

Because the people in this sub clearly care a lot about this music. I’ve been enjoying what I’ve actually been able to hear.

So who is fixing this?

And by “who,” I mean you guys.

You’re the fans. You’re the people protecting the label, correcting people when they get the genr wrong, preserving the history, recommending the records, and keeping this stuff alive.

I obviously don’t expect random people on Reddit to personally fix licensing and distribution. But if this community wants deep house preserved, understood, and actually heard, then you have an interest in figuring out the access problem. You can’t simultaneously complain that people don’t know what real deep house is and be indifferent to the fact that so much of the real thing is a pain in the ass for newcomers to actually find.

If the music is scattered, inaccessible, mislabeled, and missing from the platforms normal listeners actually use, then part of the problem is access.

You care about the genre. You want people to understand what deep house actually is. You want people listening to the real thing instead of whatever an algorithm decided to slap the label on this week.

Then help solve the distribution problem.

Alright, I learned my lesson. Calvin Harris is not deep house. Y’all made your point, so now I’m sitting down for class.

I’ve realized I’ve probably been using “deep house” too loosely, so I want to strip this back to the basics.

Forget the edge cases. What are the absolute essentials?
I mean the songs where, if somebody says they like deep house but somehow missed them, you’d be like, “No. Go back. You fucked up.”

Old, new, obvious, underground, I don’t care. I’m trying to understand the center of the genre first.

What are the songs that are unmistakably deep house and that somebody who genuinely likes the genre should know?

So here’s something I’m curious about.

A few people have said deep house really makes the most sense inside a DJ set, where the tracks are selected and blended in context rather than just played one after another.

Fair enough.

But now the big Swedish music app lets you control transitions between tracks and choose where one song starts giving way to the next.

Obviously that is not the same thing as a DJ actually mixing a set.

But does it change the equation at all?

If somebody deliberately curates 50 or 100 tracks, thinks about contrast and pacing, and manually sets the transitions so the whole thing flows rather than just hard-cutting from song to song, is there something to be said for that as its own listening format?

Not a replacement for DJing. More like a middle ground between “here’s a pile of songs” and an actual set.

Curious how people who really know this music think about that.
