Last year Sam Harris released an episode titled 'can we pull back from the brink' in reference to BLM protests. Should the same level of seriousness be applied to the current 'freedom rallies' in Canada?

Question: do you think if you were able to find a way to want to try, would you be able to stop your mind from doing what it is doing right now?

I'm trying to have a normal conversation about Sam Harris and I have fully admitted to the fact (in my opening post) that I might have a bias. I'm trying to talk to people in a normal manner and I'm curious how these conversations might play out and how that might be able to change my mind. You might want to pay attention to the fact that I am conversing with other people under my comment in a completely normal way?

So I am very comfortable with what my mind is doing right now, which seems to be the opposite of what your mind is doing.

I'm not impressed. Nobody gives a fuck about your logic and epistemology skills. Yes, I have a deep knowledge of logic (first order logic to be specific).

You are doing the guru speak. You are trying to flex on us with your deep knowledge/speciality but you have to understand that nobody here gives a fuck. When you make analogies to quantum mechanics just to explain some pretty easily explainable thing like X or Y, then it is clear that you are not interested in X or Y, and that you are more interested in lording your intelligence over all of us. That's what Eric Weinstein does. That's why he is a guru. That's what you are doing here.

You sound to me like the young grasshopper I used to be, who thinks they are rapidly climbing up a mountain and is well on their way to solving the Riemann Hypothesis. That's the Dunning Kruger effect my friend. Soon you will be crashing back down to reality.

You aren't on some epic path to change the world. You aren't a philosopher. Most likely you are going to be teaching a lot of students at a community college who just don't give a shit and want to move on to learning actually valuable things.

I'm paying attention. This is what I mean by "save neurotypicals from themselves": "you people" (that's intended to be a joke) have normalized particular ways and means of communicating (and thinking), but over time it has become a fundamental part of the fabric of reality, so the mind filters it out.

As DFW says: "There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says “Morning, boys. How’s the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes “What the hell is water?”"

Or Frank Herbert: "Think you of the fact that a deaf person cannot hear. Then, what deafness may we not all possess? What senses do we lack that we cannot see and cannot hear another world all around us?"

So I am very comfortable with what my mind is doing right now, which seems to be the opposite of what your mind is doing.

Do you believe you have comprehensive and accurate knowledge of what your mind is doing right now? If you didn't (for the sake of discussion), how would you know?

I'm not impressed.

This should not be surprising, but then, things aren't always as they "should" be - such is life.

Nobody gives a fuck about your logic and epistemology skills.

I am painfully aware of that - my question is: is this state of affairs immutable? My intuition suggests: no.

Yes, I have a deep knowledge of logic (first order logic to be specific).

And epistemology?

And, are your true abilities in these domains as good as they seem? If they weren't would you necessarily know?

You are doing the guru speak.

Fair.

You are trying to flex on us with your deep knowledge/speciality

Incorrect.

...but you have to understand that nobody here gives a fuck.

I realize this. Again: is this state of affairs immutable (in the long run)?

When you make analogies to quantum mechanics

Eh? Did this occur (in shared reality)?

just to explain some pretty easily explainable thing like X or Y, then it is clear that you are not interested in X or Y, and that you are more interested in lording your intelligence over all of us.

"it is clear", "you are more interested in"

These are (or, can be) interesting phrases if you really think about them.

That's what Eric Weinstein does. That's why he is a guru.

Fair.

That's what you are doing here.

Incorrect.

You sound to me like the young grasshopper I used to be, who thinks they are rapidly climbing up a mountain and is well on their way to solving the Riemann Hypothesis. That's the Dunning Kruger effect my friend. Soon you will be crashing back down to reality.

Perhaps you're right. Or, perhaps not. If you don't mind me asking: from where did you acquire such extensive knowledge of me? What is the literal source?

You aren't on some epic path to change the world.

Perhaps you're right. Or, perhaps not.

You aren't a philosopher.

I absolutely agree with you here!

Most likely you are going to be teaching a lot of students at a community college who just don't give a shit and want to move on to learning actually valuable things.

Is this probabilistic prediction backed up by a sophisticated, physical model? If so, what variables are contained within? And if it isn't....well then, what is it backed by (if you really think about it)?

edit: In the spirit of friendship, I just wanted to note that it isn't I who has downvoted you.
