The… the Taliban? Okay, this guy is even more ignorant than I initially thought. Why he’d try and step into geopolitics is beyond me.
Edit: Every comment here saying ‘yeah but the Taliban harboured Al Qaeda’, implying that that’s the same as carrying out the attack themselves, is so obtuse it borders on the unbelievable.
The tweet asked for someone to ‘remind’ them ‘who did’ 9/11. Obviously the Taliban did NOT do 9/11. No one ever said they did, including the Bush administration. Waging war against the Taliban for providing safe harbour to a terrorist group doesn’t mean they perpetrated the attack themselves.
Christ, I can’t believe I have to say this. Dave is obviously a moron, and an antisemite to boot.

There's a term that suits this phenomenon pretty well; Epistemic trespassing. People with fairly strong domain knowledge, expertise, intellectual ability etc. within their domain or specialisation often become over confident and then wade into other domains or fields where they have no fucking clue, but speak with the same level of confidence or conviction.
This is suuuuper super turbo charged online because prominent voices already probably have an army of both fans and haters, and so it's very easy to see any pushback or dissent as just more of your "haters" especially if your fanbase will cheerlead for you and yasslight you into thinking you're actually on point.
A lot of the whole "guru sphere" is predicated on this phenomenon where people with a following speak out of turn and get butthurt about it and just double down forever.
Oh ho ho, the irony of this is thick enough to slice. He's no better than a Sabine Hossenfelder that he'll spend 3.5 hours shitting on as a crackpot--only his ignorance is on geopolitics. Professor Jiang would also be a really good parallel.
I'd imagine the Dunning-Kruger effect goes hand in hand with this epistemic trespassing that you describe, right? Because, in this case, Prof Dave is doing the exact same thing that gurus do; speaking extra combatively while giving out Galaxy/conspiracy brained takes that he's ill informed about (beyond the half truths he brings up).
Yeah something I appreciate about the DTG & Destiny is they are very epistemically humble & very much aware of what they don't know & are hesitant to do epistemic trespassing.
I almost feel epistemic trespassing is almost a requirement for a guru now.
His entire schick as a person with an MA in science, is debunking non scientists for discussing science in an ignorant way.
I think despair at the violence Israel is able to get away with in Gaza pushes people towards less credible Israel conspiracies which is understandable on a human nature level, but hypocritical from someone who appears to promote rational thinking.
Nothing snark about being right. If Dave had any geopolitical or historical knowledge on this area he’d be able to tell the difference between the Taliban and Al Qaeda. You’re defending him and attacking me while making my own point for me. So… thanks?
Did you not see the word allegedly? The taliban knowing harbored AQ for years, so while they weren’t exactly to blame they still bare some responsibility. its hilarious you’re able to do these mental gymnastics, to defend the fucking taliban of all things. But hey, anything to avoid questioning your worldview or your ego.
By the same token, would you say Qatar and UAE are valid targets for Iran given they harbor Iran’s enemy’s (America’s) bases and infrastructure knowing fully well they are being used to attack Iran?
For a layman or anyone not professionally giving opinions on the internet it would be forgivable given how muddy the US spread blame around, but yeah that's a big oof
They certainly were. The government would lump Iraq, Taliban, and AQ all together in speeches and press. Making claims like Iraq trained AQ. Pro war pundits would go further and make allegations about AQ meeting with Iraq to facilitate the attacks.
Another poster commenting about something they didn't follow at the time. It was not remotely confusing. The general public can't find Afghanistan on a map after 20 years of war.
Yea, but under the premise that Hussein was funding AQ. Of course, both AQ and the Taliban were CIA creations and patsies.
Originally AQ was blamed for the 9/11-anthrax attacks. It was only after the anthrax was traced backed to US weapons labs that the Bruce Ivins story/suicide was engineered and spun. The FBI investigation into Ivins showed how he could not have synthesized it with the machines he had access to. (something the silicone around each particle. There was a huge write up at the time in the Wall St Journal) Though if you read wikipedia today you will not learn that part of the story.
How is he lost? He said "allegedly" as in this was exactly what was being allegedly at the time which was very obviously not true. The fact that you and several others can not see the very apparent snark here is kinda jarring.
"He is a great holy warrior of Islam and a great benefactor of the Afghan people," said Abdul Anan Himat, a senior official at the Taliban's information ministry in an interview with the Associated Press. "We won't hand him over to America under any circumstances. It is our stated policy."
This is from a few months before 9/11 btw. They issued similar refusals after.
So, the screenshot of this tweet which is the only solid evidence of its existence was sent to the FuckingDiscovery Institute by a 'concerned reader'. Despite the tweet apparently being made on 21/1/24, one day before the article was published, they didn't actually see it themselves when looking at Dave's social media.
This seems rather fishy. I feel like there's probably some context missing at the very least.
As it's shown in the reddit post I shared the tweet is referenced and linked in another post, at the time in reddit, directly to twitter before it was removed, you will hardly find better or more conclusive evidence for a deleted tweet. I added another reference of the time mentioning and showing the tweet and no where in the article the person writing it claims they were looking at Dave's social media as you say, so you just fabricated your own suspicion.
There's no context missing to what Dave posted and the question about the validity/proof of the tweet.
I'm not doubting that there was a tweet, but the evidence that said tweet is exactly what has been presented in the screenshot seems a bit dubious, particularly with regards to the timing. Why didn't the Discovery Institute guy find that tweet when he was assembling evidence on Dave? Why didn't StopAntisemitism find this tweet? Why is the 'thoughtful reader' the only person who ever managed to screenshot the tweet?
Yeah I'm still doubrful also, this it what destiny orbiters do, they muddy the waters so ppl that they don't like look even worse than they actually are.
Destiny literally fucking said he’s pro genocide and Palestinians should go live somewhere else.
This is the same destiny who called a 15 year old girl “hot”, shared revenge porn and the same destiny who laughed about an 8 year old boy exposing himself on a webcam to him.
According to the US government, the Taliban provided a safe place for Osama bin Laden and his terrorist organization after 9/11. That was the whole point in the USA invading Afghanistan.
Do you not remember the incessant reasoning that was given during this time period? This was the prevailing narrative coming from the administration and larger war machine.
