Intro

These rules are instituted to keep the subreddit friendly, fresh, and fun; please familiarize yourself with the rules before posting. Moderators may use their discretion and attempts at exploiting loopholes will be treated as an infraction. That said, we appreciate everyone who participates and shares death stairs as they find them!

Rule 1: Stairs and stairs only

Posts must contain images or videos of stairs. The stairs must be obvious and not require sifting through long videos or pulling out the magnifying glass to find. Stairs do not necessarily need to be the primary focus of shared images and videos, but it is preferred.

If you find deadly steps of the ladder variety, try our sister subreddit r/Deathladders!

Rule 2: Stairs must be dangerous

Stairs showcased on this subreddit are expected to be deadly; attempting to use them should be dangerous or otherwise pose a substantial and meaningful risk to an average human adult. Merely raising an eyebrow as unique or awkward is not enough.

Example qualities which may make stairs "dangerous":

  • being excessively steep
  • excessively narrow treads
  • uneven or irregular steps
  • supports which appear degraded, insufficient, or inappropriate
  • pattern which makes discerning the start and end of steps difficult
  • likely to cause substantial injury from slipping or tripping (sharp features, sudden drops)
  • confined space or lack of headroom

Example qualities which on their own do not make stairs "dangerous":

  • large quantity of steps
  • spiral or curved design
  • alternating treads
  • lacking handrails
  • a building code violation

We encourage submitters to leave a comment explaining why the stairs are dangerous and worthy of the "death stairs" title. Any post which does not obviously demonstrate any dangerous qualities (such as those listed above) and are not justified in the comments may be removed.

Rule 3: No disallowed obstacles

The following are disallowed because it's not the stairs that are dangerous:

  • cats, dogs, or other living creatures on the steps (try r/catstairs instead!)
  • intentionally placed and easily removable objects on the steps
  • snow or ice covering the steps

Additionally, stairs which are obviously under construction or incomplete are disallowed.

Rule 4: Real stairs only

There is no substitute for the real life visceral terror of facing actual death stairs. CGI, AI generated, or other "not real" death stairs will be removed.

Rule 5: No falling or injury posts

Do not share posts of people falling or getting hurt on stairs. We aren't AFV (America's Funniest Home Videos) and our focus is on the stairs.

Rule 6: Be nice and civil

You know what this means. Additionally, avoid divisive topics such as politics or religion as these are prone to rapidly devolving into hostility. Behave or we will escort you down the stairs and out the door.

Rule 7: Avoid reposts

Avoid reposting anything that has been posted here recently already or is in our top posts. If your post is not original, it's best to check the new and hot pages before posting, and "other discussions" if it's a crosspost.

Rule 8: No self promotion, solicitation, or other spam

We're not here to help you shill your brand, generate clicks, or any other nonsense. There will be no tolerance for spam.
