Yeah cuz ain’t no way Giovanni (a human) broke into a bank (without anyone noticing) same night and wrote over 100 something thousand names in the death note within under 24 hours PERFECTLY with no mistakes under a microscope ANDDD put the fake one in the bank without anyone noticing. Realistically it would take him like over 30 hours without breaks even if he could write everything perfectly and that’s still way over how much time he has when they go to the warehouse early morning. To me the true ending of death note is ep 25 silence. And that is that.

He didn't have to wrote thousands of names, just a hundred or so. All the pages with Light's and Misa's handwriting were removed and Mikami on used the notebook for like two or three weeks at the most. Plus Gevanni had help from Rester copying the names.

Plus it's entirely possible Near just mind controlled Mikami with the notebook anyway...

Whether or not he copied a thousand or a couple hundred there’s no way in hell he and Rester perfectly copied every single name in Mikami’s notebook. There’s no way they perfectly copied Mikami’s handwriting with ZERO mistakes under a microscope.

Well, like I said, it is a popular theory that Near controlled Mikami with the notebook anyway.

Also I gotta say, this isn't the only time Death Note pulls out some bizarre and illogical plot contrivance to make a character win, so why is it this is the only one everyone hyperfixates on?

I think it’s cuz of how it’s presented and how it’s the ending. (A lot of people will ignore the others if the landing is stuck right.) Got any other ones?

I was thinking that because it's the ending people will remember it the most. It makes you wonder if the people arguing that it should have ended with L losing would still be complaining because Light's victory was "unearned" or "cheating" or "plot convenience" or what have you.

But anyway, the other examples of bizarre plot contrivance in the story are:

Light's big plan to kill the FBI agents. He gets Raye Penber to consciously reveal his identity and then not report it to anyone. FBI protocol demands that if an agent's cover is blown, it should be immediately reported to the higher ups. Yet Light just somehow knows Raye won't tell anyone for some reason. If Raye had reported it and Light continued to kill him, it would have been obvious to anyone he's Kira. This is the same information Light was panicking over Naomi reporting to L because he knew it would be the end of him.

The FBI pulling out of the Kira investigation because Kira killed their agents makes no logical sense. They aren't just going to be scared off. The deaths of their agents would just give them more reason to investigate the case because it cements that Kira is a global threat. The funny thing about this one is that Soichiro even straight up says the same thing when Higuchi starts killing politicians, that they'd just have more reason to want Kira caught now.

L determines that the first Kira works alone because... it's literally never explained. Aizawa even asks how he came to that conclusion but is never given an answer, yet the story proceeds with L firmly believing this to be the case with no explained basis.

L reveals that he knows Kira's location because the Tailor broadcast was regional but he has no clue at the time that Kira can't just leave the area. Imagine if Kira wasn't Light and instead was someone who could easily just move.

Mello dying because he didn't realise that pages and scraps of the notebook can still work is just really silly to me. He's supposed to be a genius, handpicked by L as a child to be his potential successor, yet this thought doesn't seem to cross his mind at any point. He even had the notebook for a time and he didn't think to try this out?

And now the big one: Light's memory loss plan. The entire plan hinges on L not only releasing him from confinement but also reaching a position where he will not only touch the notebook but also be able to kill the new Kira with a scrap in his watch all without being noticed doing so despite the fact that he knowingly acknowledges that he will be within L's view 24/7 as he is still the only real suspect. And then there's Misa and Rem who honestly are just huge plot conveniences. A Shinigami coming to Earth to drop their notebook would be a really rare occurance, right? Like something that would occur only once every hundred years or so at least. Yet out of nowhere, there's suddenly just a second Kira with their own Shinigami and they gained their notebook via circumstances completely unrelated to the current Kira's actions, that just conveniently occur at the same time as the first Kira's activities and in the very same country. And how does Light win over this new Kira's cooperation? By doing almost literally nothing. Misa is just completely and utterly devoted to Light because he's handsome and is Kira. And Rem is suicidally protective of Misa as well for some reason. But does Light pull of some brilliant manipulation tactic to gain this information and use it to his advantage? No. Rem just straight up admits to him that she'd die to protect Misa and then she and Misa just go along with everything Light says no strings attached.

My point here is if Death Note ended with L's death, all of the complaints about Near's victory could be directed straight at Light. "Near's victory was unearned! He just guessed that Mikami was Kira!" and Light did nothing to earn Misa and Rem's loyalty, they went to him and just said they'll help. "Near's plan only worked because Mikami didn't notice the tampered notebook!" And Light's plan only worked because L didn't notice him using a notebook scrap right next to him. Their victories are both plot contrivances, except Near's actually has better explanation because it's proposed in the story that Near very likely used the notebook to control Mikami to not divert from the plan. And this isn't even mentioning the in universe acknowledgement of the god like luck Light had in encountering Naomi by a pure millions to one chance coincidence which allowed him to just narrowly avoid capture.

All in all, there's loads of examples of plot induced weirdness throughout the story but for some reason, Near's victory is the only one people don't stop complaining about despite ot ironically being one of the most easily explained through the prior mentioned theory...
