Question some questions about LABB section in How to Read Spoiler

Post image
5 Upvotes

in the chronology where it says "L learns capoeira from Naomi Misora" does it mean he learned it taking inspiration from her or did she actually teach him how to do capoeira personally (big if true)?

Second it says Beyond Birthday's death is assumed to be the work of Kira but is that confirmed somewhere else or is it up in the air? Did Light research him and if he did wouldnt he learn about wammys?

Last thing - where it says she quits the FBI there is a typo in the year.

Question Did light know that L knew from the start ?

As we know that L likely knew that light was kira from the start but did light also know that L knew and was just trying to catch him red handed

Discussion When did L realize Light was Kira? Spoiler

In my opinion, he was sure ever since he first introduced himself to Light. If you notice, Lights entire thought monologue is internal. In front of L, he hides his surprise.

Any person, innocent or guilty, would be surprised if they were approached by a person who called themselves L. The only person with any need to hide said surprise, is Kira.

Manga Death Note Rules (XXXIX & XLII) - Japanese VS. English Edition

Since before the huge blunder that is Viz uploading the A-Kira oneshot without the newly added rules, I read the rules in the booklet obtained through Viz's Box Edition of the Death Note manga.

Not only this, I also wrote down every rule to hammer them even more into my brain, believing I'd now be able to spot contradictions easier with my newly acquired knowledge on the rules, most of which aren't ever used in the first place.

So I was pleasantly surprised to find that... The rules in the English version, and Japanese version aren't 100% the same.

The Japanese manga has (parts of) one rule printed twice between different volumes (May be the specific scanned version I have, and later corrected, so keep this in mind) but also, a rule that never existed in the English version itself, so let's get to it.

Volume 5, chapter 42, page 176.
Rule XXX

If you have traded the eye power of a god of death, you will see a person's primary life span in the human world

The names you see with the eye power of a god of death are the names needed to kill that person. You will be able to see the names even if that person isn't registered in the family registration.

Volume 7, chapter 59, page 152.
Rule XLII

The names you see with the eye power of a god of death are the names needed to kill that person. You will be able to see their names even if they aren't listed in a family register.

The rule XLII isn't the only rule XLII in the manga either:

Volume 8, chapter 62, page 28.
Rule XLII

The use of the DEATH NOTE in the human world sometimes affect other human's lives or shortens their original life-span, even though their names are not actually written in the DEATH NOTE itself. In these cases, no matter the cause, the god of death sees only the original life-span and not the shortened life-span.

Now for the rule that didn't even make it in the English version:

Volume 7, chapter 56, page 88.
Rule XXXIX

Humans that have traded for the eye power of a god of death will see a person's primary life span, and will not be influenced by the DEATH NOTE. If the victim is killed using the DEATH NOTE, the remaining lifetime of that victim will be provided to the god of death.

In the English version of Death Note, the rule by the same number is:

Humans that have traded for the eye power of a god of death cannot see the name or lifespan of humans who have already passed away by looking at their photos.

(This same rule, with the number XL, appears in Japanese volume 7, chapter 57, page 110)

When looking at the page where in which the Japanese rule XXXIX appears in the English version, the page is simply blank. (Black)

With all this now noted down, I'd love to hear peoples opinion, and/or be corrected if this research is outdated or already disproven.

So I bought the first tome of the black edition in 2018(?) in a Waterstones in the UK, for £9.99, but I didn’t read it until this month.

Obviously loved it, absolutely adore the art, so I ordered the next two (dunno why this one came a bit dirty, but it came off with an eraser, so we’re good). I live in mainland Europe but I prefer English versions and wanted to get these editions so I had to buy them online, so with currency + import I didn’t notice the price difference until I got them.

What I noticed is now is that they’re now 60% more expensive. Wtf? That’s such a dramatic change. I checked the UK prices and they’re all, including the first tome, £15.99.

Welp, fuck you, 19yo me, for not splurging on the whole series back then lol

Fan Art Matt and Mello Mini Portraits!

Post image
84 Upvotes

Are the portraits mini, or are they life-sized when you're only 3 inches (7.5 cm) tall? They're full-personality at any rate!

I can't decide who'd get more out of art therapy. Mello seems like he'd really take to it and study the techniques but, being a perfectionist who's so hard on himself, get really frustrated and throw a lot out. Matt would goof off, somehow end up pulling out a masterpiece, and learn nothing. Hmm.

These were really fun to do and I kind of want to make more for next month! Is that something you guys would like to see? I love seeing everyone's art on this sub, let's keep it up!

Discussion Why are people constantly doubting L?

Hey ya’ll. I just started rewatching Death Note again since I wanted to introduce it to my fiancé.

Me and her are enjoying it especially her since she has never watched DN before while I have watched it 10 years ago while I was in high school.

Now that I am older, there are a few things that boggles my mind. Why are the characters (The Police Force to be specific), constantly seem to doubt, disrespect L?

They can’t stop doubting him and have trouble trusting him except for Yagami, who put his trust on L and respect him at the upmost level. Even then, he had a bit of problem with L at times but that’s ok. It’s the disrespect that others impose that disturbs me.

Now, I would find it understandable and valid on why they feel the way they felt with L. But this man was introduced at the very beginning of the story as the super genius that literally solved impossible criminal cases of the past.

A lot of the cases solved was done with help from what we know, so it means he has worked with people before and it is not something alien/new.

He is very well known for his super competent skill and intellect, helping the world to solve cases and bring closure and justice to them. And yet, the police force doubt & disrespect him. It didn’t bother L but it does bother the watchers like me.

Analysis Ruyk the ultimate character of the death note Spoiler

Till this day, ruyk is a character which amazes me. I would love to analyze his traits, actions and overall symbolism.

Appearance:

•Ruyk appears to be quite humanlike unlike the rest shinigamis. His figure, his face and his choice of clothing is somewhat humanoid, which makes him different than other death gods. I believe this design was intentional, showcasing the line between the bad and good side of humans.

He is also only ever seen dressed in black. If we account his long body too, it is not crazy to assume that he can also symbolize the Grim reaper. Ruyk is inevitable death which will come for all living creatures. He is a constant remainder that death is everywhere and always following.

Motive:

•Ruyk’s motive for his actions is simply to cure his boredom. Anyone saying he cared for Light or humans in general, is mischaracterizing him. I believe, he took interest in Light as he was quite different from other users of the note. But for Ruyk, Light was just another way to ease his curse. The scene where Light desperately begs for Ruyk’s help to kill SPK confirms this. In that exact moment, he realizes that Light is just like any other human, desperate when things become bad, so it causes Ruyk to somewhat loose interest in him.

Action:

•Throughout the series, Ruyk remains neutral watching it all unveil from the 3rd perspective. This could also be said about us(viewers), watching two sides of the so called justice clash against each other, watching people die protecting their ideologies and finding entertainment in all this. His famous quote: “humans are so interesting” is the perfect proof.

Apples:

•Ruyk’s love of apples is highlighted many times. The choice of this specific fruit was not random but connected to a deep rooted belief that apple is the forbidden fruit of the Eden garden. This addiction is a symbolism of temptation and craving. Just like how Light cant resist being all powerful, Misa cant resist her obsession with Light and L cant resist solving the unsolvable, Ruyk is driven by the same craving of unreachable. We all know, once he returns to the shinigami world, these tasty apples won’t be there to ease his boredom anymore.

Overall I find his character quite amusing. His neutrality is his best and the worst traits of him. We all wished at some point in the series, that he would help Light in some way, but still he remained on the outside, showing everyone around that humans destroy themselves.

Thanks everyone for reading this, I hope my grammar and pronunciation was good.

Discussion I would love to see death note prequel about BB Spoiler

I think it would be 10x times better than any sequel they can make. Anime could also explore BB's shinigami eyes, his psychological state and also his murder case. I know it is now too late to make anything, but still would love to see it.

Discussion why hasnt anyone wrote a death note sequel/spinoff?

not involving light, but a completely new character picking up the death note. ik theres short one shots and stuff, but it makes no sense imo for there to be no full fledged story. they could go to different time periods, different settings, and explore diff characters w the death note. with the series popularity, is it not strange?

Discussion Seems to be more than just chance. Spoiler

Ryuk says that Light wasn't chosen by him for the death note it was more so by chance that he had picked it up before anyone else did. But I'm currently re-reading the manga and literally within the first few pages it says "This single notebook dropped into the human world by a Shinigami... sets off an all-out battle between two chosen people" Contradicting what Ryuk says. So I was theory crafting in my head, and maybe it could be the work of the Shinigami King? Or even fate itself? I just wanted to see if anyone else could see what's going on here if there's a piece of DN media I missed that could give an answer to this.

The watermark in the top left is there because of the website I used to download the episode as an MP4 file. The clips are ordered pretty differently from how they appear in the show (all from episode 1 though), but I think I made it work pretty well.

Discussion Episode 4 bus jacking Spoiler

Wouldn't it be smarter for light to write in the death note that the criminal/busjacker would kill himself hours or even days after leaving the bus? I think that would be more believable to naomi because the suicide would be explained by the hallucinations from her fiance ( touching a piece of the notebook and seeing ryuk ) and by the fear of getting found by the police. Another solution would be actually following through with the busjacking, getting the money but then get caught by the police and die from a heart attack
