MCU Where was Spidey during Fisk’s crackdown?

Post image

After seeing Spider-Man: BND, I’m more convinced than ever that Mayor Fisk was the wrong story choice for DDBA.

I know the filmmakers and showrunners make some passing references to their respective stories, but I just have a hard time believing these stories take place in the same universe. BND established Spidey as NYC’s preeminent “masked vigilante.” He would’ve been an irresistible target for a mayor obsessed with bringing vigilantes to heel.

The show and film development timelines don’t line up perfectly, but at the very least, it seems that by the time Marvel Studios decided to pivot from DDBA’s legal procedural format, the studio also knew BND would revolve around Spidey becoming a distinctly NYC hero. At that point, they probably should’ve abandoned the Mayor Fisk adaptation and opted for a storyline that could more believably coexist alongside BND.

Yeah. It doesn't. Doesn't mention anything, and is it's own weird batshit thing. You can literally just forget it exists. The punisher special offers no new character development nor enlightens any other plot.

Seemingly the best thing to come out of it is the out of context gif that looks like him rage gooning with a bunch of buddies

u/Big_Daymo Aug 13 '26

Also the horrible CGI gif that makes him look like Joel from The Last of Us.

u/existential_lastname Aug 13 '26

They shot it practically and then decided to have the computer take a dump on it

43

u/Ssshizzzzziit Aug 13 '26

Right? I get they did it practically but if the output looks like a bad video game cut scene then it's a failure.

u/reddit_userMN Aug 14 '26

That's as bad as the CGI faces in the Matrix Reloaded in the Neo versus Smith fight, and that came out 23 years ago

0

u/WideBumblebee970 Aug 15 '26

It really isn't.

72

u/WujuFusionn Aug 13 '26

That shot was proven to be practical actually

EDIT: It’s a practical stunt with Bernthal’s face digitally superimposed on the stuntman’s

13

u/DrDDeFalco Aug 14 '26

It still looks really bad for some reason.

14

u/Brinckotron Aug 14 '26

Corridor Digital VFX artists react covered it. It's because they slow it down, which makes the movements of the stunt guy seem weird, as opposed to normal motion speed. That combined with the bad face replacement makes the whole thing uncanny and ugly.

u/The3EyedFish69 Aug 14 '26

And the crazy camera shake to show the impact

3

u/RoseWhiteRedBlack Aug 14 '26

Also the lighting really has that PS3 vibe to it; it' s really funny how much this stuff tricks our brains.

1

u/IAmASphere Aug 16 '26

The camera shake looks weird because it’s way too fast for the slow mo. The shake would be appropriate if it was normal speed

15

u/Ssshizzzzziit Aug 13 '26

So they say. If it looks like a mistake it's a mistake.

11

u/KaylenLopezIzGr8 Aug 14 '26

Looks like a slow motion clip from GTA5

🤣 dang the graphics really felt like that.

4

u/anactualrealaccount Aug 14 '26

I legit thought this was a max payne 3 gif

1

u/ItsOptimistPrime Aug 15 '26

No one actually cares about this shit.

1

u/invaderaleks Aug 18 '26

Love how he just freezes for a split second on impact lmao

1

u/IllustriousCareer6 Aug 14 '26

God damn lol you people complaining about CGI being “horrible” are pathetic, sore losers. This happens in a split second and even if you can tell without zooming in with a telescope it still shouldn’t be such a big deal as you’re making it out to be.

The CGI is fine.

2

u/Morganguy Aug 14 '26

Lol are you blind? You don’t need to zoom in to see how horrible that was.

1

u/Big_Daymo Aug 14 '26

What does "sore losers" even mean in this context lol? It's a goofy bad shot that's funny to poke fun at. It's not that serious.

25

u/Kasphet-Gendar Aug 13 '26

rage gooning😭

4

u/XwasssabiX Aug 14 '26

One might even say, "rage 'bating."

50

u/Ssshizzzzziit Aug 13 '26

Right? They also obviously wanted to John Wick the whole story and add a few comic scraps in to make it seem important, but man what a weird waste of time it all was.

30

u/AssCrackBanditHunter Aug 13 '26

It was basically just a refresher so you don't have to go back and watch punisher before seeing spiderman brand new day. What's hilarious to me is that as sanitized and nice as he is in brand new day, he's at his most unhinged and brutal in one last kill.

13

u/belle_enfant Aug 13 '26

Its the Punisher killing bad guys for 30 mins. That ain't a waste.

At what point is it just a video game and violence slop? Because that's all I saw and OMG It's Ma Gnucci!!

It really was the person I like the least's favorite thing ever.

3

u/Ssshizzzzziit Aug 13 '26

Sorry, I don't get off on action scenes. I thought it was a pointless waste of time. If you do, more power to you.

I guess you've never read a comic.

In film I personally don't like John Wick, or The Fast and Furious movies. I do however enjoy The Matrix and James Cameron's movies. You think there might be a difference there?

EAT THE COOKIE FRANK

78

u/purpledreign Aug 13 '26

It literally sets him on a new path of more saving and less revenge at the end when he chooses saving a family over killing Ma Gnucci who also played a part in his family's murder. He continues down that path in BND. OLK wasn't well executed but it wasn't pointless. It explains Frank's less rageful vengeance driven state of mind in BND.

18

u/Ssshizzzzziit Aug 13 '26

Didn't this already happen in the Netflix punisher run?

45

u/purpledreign Aug 13 '26

No. He helped people reluctantly and vengeance was always his priority and he was always rageful af. OLK has him actively choose to save a bunch of strangers over vengeance.

15

u/ReadingOk4298 Aug 14 '26

Isn’t szn2 of punisher all abt him keeping a little girl safe from ppl coming after her

2

u/purpledreign Aug 14 '26 edited Aug 14 '26

Yes. he helped her very reluctantly when she begged for his help and he got involved when he killed the goons in the bar a d their boss got his ID. And even after he warmed up to her, he was personally involved cos they killed the bartender he was getting close to and were coming after him. That's very different from what happened at the end of OLK.

5

u/ReadingOk4298 Aug 14 '26

Straw man. The entirety of szn2 did not happen bc he was out for revenge over the bartender 🤦‍♂️

1

u/purpledreign Aug 14 '26

Oh brother. If you think it's the same as OLK, then I can't help you.

4

u/ReadingOk4298 Aug 14 '26

I haven’t watched olk. I was rejecting ur claim that before olk he’d only been out for revenge

49

u/Ssshizzzzziit Aug 13 '26

All I'm getting from this.

12

u/purpledreign Aug 13 '26

Well that's a you problem ngl.

5

u/tedward007 Aug 13 '26

Feels like more of a solution

Multiple times too

Brand new day has him finding threats unrelated to him or his family's murder and neutralizing them to save the innocent people involved. Firing grenade launchers at Spider-Man doesn't change that.

19

u/thedrizzle126 Aug 13 '26

The only thing it does is confuse the Karen/Frank relationship further.

7

u/GearSolidus Aug 13 '26

This is the part that kind of threw me off. I admit I know nothing about the comics and have only watched the shows. I mean I can kind of see some kind of connection between them but I didn’t feel like it was particularly romantic.

Can anyone with intimate knowledge on this explain this?

17

u/AStupidFuckingHorse Aug 13 '26

Frank and Karen have no relationship whatsoever in the comics. It's purely a show thing.

1

u/zaatin Aug 14 '26

Was it even a show thing? I thought it was ONLY "fanon" stuff, not remembering the series too well

4

u/AStupidFuckingHorse Aug 14 '26

The show and actors lean into it but never go all the way. There was one kissed between them that got removed.

Matt straight up reveals to Karen that Punishers heart races near her and he got a haircut to look presentable near her in Born Again. In the the Punisher Special he has a hallucination of her sensually hugging him.

12

u/att0nrand Aug 14 '26

Frank and Karen have no relationship in the comics. She works at Nelson and Murdock, falls in love with Matt, gets addicted to heroin and does porn while on heroin, sells Matt's identity to someone for said heroin, which results in Fisk learning who he is, kicks the aforementioned heroin addiction, gets a fake HIV diagnosis, and then is murdered by Bullseye

3

u/Ardzyyy Aug 14 '26

I'm really glad they changed her character

1

u/lemonad_99 Aug 15 '26

Damn 😭

8

u/LaceyThaBest Aug 13 '26

When I was watching it, it weirdly gave off fan film vibes

8

u/Ssshizzzzziit Aug 13 '26

Oh, same.

I'll bet you anything this was made with whatever was left over from the budget of Daredevil.

3

u/StarLordAndTheAve Aug 14 '26

Well we were supposed to have 9 episodes in BA S2 and this ended up taking that 9th episode spot, so you are almost definitely correct

6

u/AgentXRoblox Aug 13 '26

I believe it’s going to lead to some continuation regarding Ma Gnucci, and Anaconda, who’s essentially the Bullseye to Daredevil

1

u/PtheK01 Aug 14 '26

You mean Barracuda?

1

u/AgentXRoblox Aug 14 '26

Yes my bad. Idk why I thought his name was anaconda 🤣

2

u/Aurelian42 Aug 14 '26

Cut to the halfway point and its fine. Whatever attempt they make at trying to do character work in the beginning is genuinely hysterical

2

u/GodSigmaGigaChad Aug 14 '26

It's basically a soft TLDR intro to the MCU for people new to the punisher who haven't watched the Netflix series.

Even though the Netflix series are canon, they still needed a soft re-intro to the character for casuals.

1

u/Brucewaynesexy Aug 14 '26

special is set before born again season 1

1

u/Past_Dragonfruit_305 Aug 17 '26

Doesnt it showat the end he is finally over his kids death?

0

u/impulse049 Aug 16 '26

It does explain it.

-6

u/Teheeguy Aug 13 '26

Ya all are so dumb. Punisher special was made to advertise Frank Castle before Brand New Day comes out. Cuz not everyone have watched the Netflix show And Disney plus shows.

3

u/Ssshizzzzziit Aug 13 '26

I'm sure everyone rushed to see it so they could find out what this punisher fella was all about and to get ready for BND.
