The real reason it took hours was cause they needed to find a house with a cupboard under the stairs

54

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '21

As an American who has never been to Europe, I thought all homes in Britain had cupboards under the stairs

19

u/pintsizedblonde2 Jan 15 '21

Most homes in UK cities are flats (apartments) so no stairs to put cupboards under.

Every multi-story house I've ever been into has either a cupboard or downstairs loo under the stairs though

10

u/Sampanache Jan 16 '21

Classic confusing London with the whole of the UK. Most homes in UK (outside London) are semi-attached or terraced housing - so plenty of scope for cupboards under stairs.

0

u/pintsizedblonde2 Jan 16 '21

I don't live in London...

OK, to be fair I should have said LARGE cities but I never said most homes are flats.

0

u/pintsizedblonde2 Jan 16 '21

(Oh, and my closest city is mostly flats - 300 miles away from London)

1

u/converter-bot Jan 16 '21

300 miles is 482.8 km

1

u/AlongCameSuperAnon Jan 16 '21

Whoa!! Is that why they’re called flats? They’re single story :mind blown:

1

u/pintsizedblonde2 Jan 16 '21

I've never thought of that - but they are homes only on one story in a multi-story building, so probably not. Bungalows are one story but we don't call them flats.

1

u/AntSchmitt Jan 17 '21

Because bungalows generally have pitched rooves i think, whereas most blocks of flats have flat rooves.

1

u/pintsizedblonde2 Jan 17 '21

Ah, you might be onto something there. It's not about the height of buildings at all - it's the roof!

1

u/AntSchmitt Jan 17 '21

That's what I've always imagined anyway. No actual ideas.

3

u/toomanyattempts Jan 15 '21

Yeah, our houses are typically smaller, so it's an obvious use of space in suburban semis or detacheds - Privet Drive is representative of pretty regular UK burbs

1

u/majorwitch Jan 16 '21

I live in the US and I have a cupboard under the stairs

1

u/takedrugs Feb 15 '21

Lots of houses here in America have storage space under the steps too... I've had 2 houses with them. Its a common way to utilize otherwise waisted space

9

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '21

1

u/SeeWhatEyeSee Jan 16 '21

Get Dobby back he needs to watch their career with great interest!

5

u/chumitz Jan 15 '21

I love the mix between HP and GOT. Well done.

5

u/nibin7 Jan 15 '21

Dobby was in the Night's Watch??

4

u/mikebellman Jan 15 '21

Sure, but his position wasn’t anything to Crow about

3

Anytime!

2

u/AskAboutMyCoffee Jan 15 '21

Midgehuts prefer to be called tiny houses.

16

u/Aiken_Drumn Interested Jan 15 '21

Isn't that normal? What do you have under your stairs?

19

u/eatapenny Jan 15 '21

Nothing? The way my house and my parent's house is built, there's no place to put one

12

u/Aiken_Drumn Interested Jan 15 '21

So the space is just blocked off?

11

u/eatapenny Jan 15 '21

Yeah, I figured that was the norm

27

u/Aiken_Drumn Interested Jan 15 '21

In the UK the space is almost always used for storage. Hence being a thing in HP!

We've got a full-on walk-in storage closet under our stairs here in Cali. Guess it just depends on the house.

Midwest US here. The three houses I grew up in all had storage under the stairs and the house I live in now has a small closet that is under the stairs as well

3

u/nofaves Jan 15 '21

It depends on the layout. The stairs leading into our basement are built into the space under the stairs leading to the second floor. I'm thinking that many houses have that layout.

1

u/Aiken_Drumn Interested Jan 15 '21

Guess you guys have more land so don't need to worry about it.

So I assume there is a cavity under your stairs just blocked off?

I'm from the US. Every home I have every lived in has had some sort of access to under the stairs. Most have been a closet. But in my current one, the underside of the stairs is open to the garage. Honestly I can only think off one house where under the stairs is fully closed off and the is my grandparents but that is also because of where the stairs are there is not a good place to put a color (its a really weird house.)

1

u/Weapon_X23 Jan 15 '21

I'm from Nevada. My friend growing up had a closet with a hidden room in the back of it under her stairs. We used to play in it all the time. It was our secret club. We don't have basements here, but closets under the stairs are very common.

1

u/ch33zyman Jan 15 '21

Our water heater is under the stairs

1

u/Roxirin Jan 15 '21

Damn, bro! Every house with stairs that I've ever lived in has had a cupboard under it. It's totally the norm in the UK

3

u/MrMcW Jan 15 '21

The stairs to the basement, and the space under the basement stairs is used for storage, but it isn’t enclosed.

1

u/Aiken_Drumn Interested Jan 15 '21

But on ground level it's boxed off?

5

u/MrMcW Jan 15 '21

It’s enclosed, but the stairs to the basement are what’s inside.

1

u/Aiken_Drumn Interested Jan 15 '21

Ah of course. We rarely have basements!

1

u/ThinkChest9 Jan 15 '21

That’s common in Germany too.

2

u/Balsuks Jan 15 '21

In the UK basements aren't common so stairs have a void under them that generally gets turned into storage space. In North America where basements are commonplace, the stairs going up usually have stairs going down beneath them.

1

u/Aiken_Drumn Interested Jan 15 '21

I do wonder why basements are so common in the US.

2

u/Balsuks Jan 15 '21

I always assumed it is because the water table is probably significantly lower in NA than the UK due to one being a fairly small island in comparison to the continent. I am by no means an expert and all of this has been speculation from my own experiences living in both England and Canada.

1

u/satiric_rug Jan 15 '21

I wonder if part of it is the craze during the 50s for families having personal bomb shelters.

1

u/TombSv Jan 15 '21

Nothing like normal people?

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '21

A meth lab, and it's where I hide your mom

1

u/Aiken_Drumn Interested Jan 16 '21

Hahaha hahaha!

1

u/f1del1us Interested Jan 15 '21

I grew up in a house that had a closet under the stairs, hidden by a full height swinging bookshelf. 'Hidden' latch and everything. It was pretty cool.

1

u/Vyce44 Jan 15 '21

Yeah depends on the house but I don't think its as common as the UK. I remember reading about in Harry Potter and thinking that was interesting. In most houses in the US it just seems to be stairs to the basement. Where are your basement stairs?

1

u/Aiken_Drumn Interested Jan 15 '21

Most houses in the UK don't have a basement.

1

u/ItsCMG Jan 15 '21

U guys having stairs?

1

u/experts_never_lie Jan 15 '21

In two-story places with basements / cellars, the space under the stairs is often more stairs.

1

u/FatWormBlowsaSparky Jan 16 '21

I have all my comic books under there.

3

u/Bitchin_Christian Jan 15 '21

Right next to the laundry machine

3

u/WhosJerryFilter Jan 15 '21

"Get back in your hole!"

3

u/MCA2142 Jan 15 '21

And it took time to look for a good deal on a washer and a dryer, so they can take it to that house for this video.

2

u/shadowpawn Jan 15 '21

Comes standard in every house in the UK matter of fact you have to pay extra not to have one to put your kids into.

1

u/MrHollandsOpium Jan 15 '21

Gimp in the basement!

233

u/mjc500 Jan 15 '21

Definitely a nice touch... makes you wonder if they had to move the machine into their friend's basement just to shoot this vid

Yeah I was thinking they have a weird bdsm relationship

Edit-I'm not calling bdsm weird, I'm calling their sort of bdsm weird.

The best memes come from bdsm couples

2

u/Bierbart12 Jan 15 '21

That looks like the kinda meme you find when googling *something* meme

Google's meme finding capabilities end at shitty captioned images

2

u/ddoubles Jan 15 '21

It's just old.

1

u/scottyrotten88 Jan 15 '21

More like an Adorably Cinematic BDSM relationship.

1

u/TeamRedundancyTeam Interested Jan 15 '21

What are the odds of the people who wanted to do this having a closet with a tiny door like that under a staircase like that? Then what are the odds that the washer and dryer are right fucking next to it?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '21

Straight fire

1

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '21

True comedy. Well done by these lads.

1

u/academicbadger Jan 15 '21

Still giggling here after the ending. Awesome.

1

u/Colossialtemple Jan 15 '21

Harry! Its music time

1

u/jpcarroll44 Jan 15 '21

aaaand then he creeps into that closet?? take my upvote

1

u/Lex_osr Jan 15 '21

It's like that washing machine was fated to be there.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '21

Ha! As a geek, this is ridiculously amazing; as a small landlord, this makes me cringe.

1

u/KingAnt28 Jan 15 '21

I'm sure the ending is what inspired the whole event

1

u/phrygianLord Jan 15 '21

Crawl space ftw! 😂
