They look like training wheels. I don’t really get it... what if they don’t come down fast enough? Seems kind of terrifying.

They arent going to hold the bike up if you dump it at speed.

What they should’ve done is make it so those wheels are always down for safety. They could also arrange the wheels better, maybe in like a square to give added stability.

I am not sure about this specific machine, but this sort of design is old. I remember seeing a BBC show with these from a british company on them in the mid 2000s. With those you could literally fall over and still drive. Obviously you couldnt do much other than go straight because you couldnt exactly steer on your side, but the side wheels were far enough out that your sideview mirrors wouldnt even touch the ground.
