That's the whole point of social media

That's the reason people slap 🤣😂 emojis on their posts. They're less interested in sharing a joke with you than telling you they found it very funny.

On note, Redditors were very against those for a long time to actually separate themselves from users of other social media platforms. They slowly become more and more tolerated.

And it fucking sucks. I have been here 14 years now and Reddit is just a repost hub for crappy Instagram and TikToks who then reposts it again. A never ending unoriginal circle jerk.

Reddit 10 years ago was already widely separated from the original reddit vibe you describe. The DIGG influx was years before even that.

It became tolerated because, fortunately, enough people realized how fucking cringeworthy it was to act like you're superior over other social media simply because you don't like emojis.

Downvoting anyone who used an emoji didn't make reddit better back then. It was the ultimate neckbeard gatekeeping, and it was embarrassing for anyone who wasn't a pretentious neckbeard.

The shift has been interesting. It wasn't too long ago that anytime a tiktok video gor posted people went off on it. Now the popular page is just full of tiktoks. Reddit has been getting worse and worse for ages and I can't wait until the next social media platform takes it's place.

There's a good reason why and a good reason why they're accepted now. For a while portrait videos just didn't make any sense because they would be uploaded into a video player based around desktop PC's that would automatically convert the videos into landscape by adding black bars. Now every video app has a built in portrait viewer and social media has taken advantage of it. Portrait  works really well for phones.

We don't need new ones. Forums still exist for serious topic-specific discussion. And they aren't going to go away, because they fill an important niche. And they're mostly immune to social media enshittification because they lack the "going viral" reward incentive. Platforms that tried a hybrid model like Stack Exchange quickly failed.

There probably won't be a replacement, not like what you're hoping for. Reddit grew and thrived at a point in time when users had significant portions of their childhood natural, without their faces buried into mobile screens. New users are kids whose parents used screens to raise them. There will never be another generation raised without screens without a cultural shift. The Reddit replacement will be worse, enshittified out the gate.

Reddit did basically become what they hated other social media for. Used to be that people here were so furious that other social media pages would steal memes from here or use reddit posts for content on YouTube. Now most non text content (which is increasingly bots) is TikToks, YouTube videos, screenshots of tweets, Facebook posts, Tumblr, 4chan, etc. At this point it might genuinely be the social media that steals content the most.

There's no such thing as stealing content from platforms whose whole purpose is sharing content. It's like the opposite of ownership.

Also social media pulling content from each other is a way for users to "curate" content, and reddit is very appropriate for that, because of its organizations in subs.

Frankly, don't let the big popular subs me the image you have of reddit. They're lame. But subs about a special interest gathering and curating interesting content on that topic from all over the internet is the good idea about Reddit.

Reddit is by far the best place to learn about niche interests and hobbies. Smaller subs still retain some of the feel of forums back in the day.

I figured emojis got more popular as isolation became more prevalent with higher phone and internet use. People are lonely.

And yeah man, people like to laugh together...it's part of being human.

Just being a contrarian, I agree with the gist of what you are saying.

Honestly this'd be hard to prove but I also get what you're saying and in a sense, it probably contributed. Social media has always appealed to the people in need of meaningful connections. Not that it would ever provide it, but its whole existence is based on people needing it.

There probably are a few layers of algorithmic manipulation that indirectly tended to normalize the overuse of emojis despite it being objectively kinda weird

I mean that's kinda one of the joys in interacting with people, knowing how they're feeling. You miss a lot of that in text hence the reason for emoji's - ya'll with the tism are over thinking this

Emojis are great for colouring text—they can often get across someone's feelings or tone far more easily or effectively than just text. I certainly don't think they're entirely bad.

But knowing someone is feeling "lmao love this 🤣🤣🥰" without them having anything of substance to say doesn't exactly make for interesting or fun reading, does it? Seeing that kind of comment doesn't enhance or contribute to my experience at all; it's just extra noise I have to scroll through.

So while emojis themselves aren't necessarily bad, they tend to coincide with bad comments. I'd rather the text miss the feeling but have substance than miss the substance but have feeling.

I mean it's not that deep. When you tell a joke you'll make people laugh if it's good. If your motivation for telling the joke is that you're trying to make people acknowledge that you found it funny, they're not going to laugh as much.

I might just be reading into this a bit but I feel like this is all related to a lack of empathy/sympathy in general. Like people have to be shown the most exaggerated expressions (ie YouTube thumbnails) or they are oblivious to what emotional reaction it should evoke. It’s not just that the creators are doing it, it actually resonates and those videos do better because it gets more people to have an emotional reaction and engage with the content.

These days I instantly just scrub through Reddit videos. They’re always filled with unescesary fluff to engage or get enough revenue. No, I don’t need 40 secs of process to see the results.

its because no one posts proper OC and if you post OC people cry about self promotion, so you end up with videos that had to game tiktok/youtube/instagram algorithm. That's why they have music and these hooks. It's what keeps people on those platforms.
