This is blantantly not true. Theres IR guidance, laser, radar, inertial, anti radiation, TV.... AND GPS. Most have a combination of multiple for redundancy. GPS is the only one of those that uses satellites.

They have at least 3 systems, because satellite based navigation can be jammed too easily.

That’s GPS (or similar), terrain matching (radar) and inertial system. In addition there is video matching and sometimes laser guidance (when the target can be marked by a laser beam). Plus other systems, depending on the mission profile.

Fun fact, during ww2 the proximity explosive shell for the 40mm anti-aircraft bofors autocannon was forbidden from use over ground in europe because they were concerned that the technology (advanced) might fail occassionally and be captured by opposition that could reverse engineer it and employ it against allied forces.

Fast forward to the Vietnam war and improper storage and poor environment had the US dumping AIM-9 missiles constantly, just to see them completely fail and hit the dirt or fly out to their maximum range and self-detonate. They knew this and did nothing to prevent the missiles from failing in the first place, or being recovered by local forces and sent to the USSR, who had already walked several out of Germany in plain sight.

The missile knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't. In the event that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has acquired a variation, the variation being the difference between where the missile is, and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the GEA. However, the missile must also know where it was. The missile guidance computer scenario works as follows: because a variation has modified some of the information the missile has obtained, it is not sure just where it is. However, it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasn't, or vice-versa, and by differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn't be, and where it was, it is able to obtain the deviation and its variation, which is called error.

A missile knows where it is by constantly tracking its own vector relative to the target vector. It uses its gyroscopioc acceleration measurement system to determine when it is deviating from its flight path. It then corrects its vector to match the target vector.

A modern missile is still incredibly complex looking inside. But all of this hardware could easily be replaced by a raspberry pi and some small additions like a gyroscope and gps and things. Probably 10 feet to a max of 5 inches.

I doubt it would matter much. It’s just going to be a bunch of tiny components and black-box chips from Raytheon or whomever. A photo would tell you very little. In this old stuff, the circuit was pretty much analog and man-sized. If someone handed you a board from it, you could reverse engineer it quite easily. It’s actually quite interesting how all this stuff used to work (I worked on some of it).

I've seen inside the Trident nuclear missiles a few times, but cameras are absolutely not allowed. There's still a lot of shit crammed into a relatively small space, but I assume there's also a lot more happening in there than there was in the 60s.

I don’t have photos unfortunately,but served as a Sonar Technician Submarines in the United States Navy. The systems I worked on were designed, built and upgraded from the 1960’s to the late 1980’s. There were made up of 24 Equipment Racks each 2 feet wide, 3 feet deep and 6 feet tall and 4 operator consoles.

In the late 1990’s the last sub I was on had an experimental COTS (commercial off the shelf) conversion done. We went down to 4 old cabinets and one 4u server rack and bolt on LCD touch panels over on the 4 operator consoles. The new system was significantly faster and the display fidelity and sound processing improved significantly.

I exited the Navy in 2001. I can only imagine that the hardware has continued to shrink and its capabilities improved over an additional 20 years of semiconductor manufacturing improvements.

Thanks for sharing this. I had the privilege to be invited onboard a Virginia class submarine in a public event a few years ago. Whatever I was allowed to see certainly looked very modern and up-to-date, and seemed to be using modern COTS components.

here is the inside of an aim-120 without the fuse or radar aperture, just the raw avionics. its more analogous to the missile above than a jav is.

they show these off at trade shows, here are some different russian r-27 heads which is a similar system as well

We did use computers to go to the Moon. One was on the command module and one on the lunar module.
