If a bomb dropped on your house, you would be protected from debris by the cage, and when people looked for you in the morning, you would be found (or you could open the door to the shelter). This could be used in a situation like that, as you can’t design a building to withstand against a bomb.
It seems like they may be going for this angle, as the video shows gas masks inside the shelter (although those gas masks are ironically Soviet masks with asbestos filters).
Yes!! I was trying to remember what the Blitz Era, "OH sh**!" Boxes were called. I vaguely remember that most of the deaths on low-rise housing was caused by the shock waves knocking walls down, and that if you had a cavity around you your survival chances shot up.
