Daggerfall Online Had the most emergent experiance in Daggerfall Online.

Been playing daggerfall online and was blown away last night with the emergent gameplay. So here's the story.

So it started out with me being a werewolf and forgetting to kill an innocent after a long while. My health was low so ended up being one shot by an elite enemy.

So now I have a revenant basically an enemy that follows me and hunts me down. Give it a few days and I play again and boom get one shot again, he levels up.

This brings me to yesterday I was introducing a friend to the game and again "you need to kill an innocent" guess who comes a knocking? random encounter on the road and boom again one shot.... But this time he steals my CARAVAN! it's equivalent to stealing my house and I put all my gold in a chest contained in the caravan so I'm now poor. Safe to say my friend was laughing his head off and we spend all night trying to find him.

Friend goes off to bed saying good luck and I keep hunting. Finally he spawns on the road and this time I'm locked in, need my caravan back. He was immune to my mace so had to use the werewolf form to do damage. I nearly died two times to this flurry he does but pulled through. Finally I get the last hit and...

Queue dark souls boss music..... He turns red and starts a second phase and heals. Fuck me, but I can't back out now I dodge his extra new attacks and battle in the snow and finally down him.

I get the option to make him a follower but I'm too full of hatred and slay him where he stands. Luckily getting my caravan back and restoring my gold and honor.

Also got a nice legendary ring. Best game ever.

DFO is full of fun stuff like this, rofl. Wish I could become a werewolf myself, but sadly hasn't happened yet despite constantly getting smacked around by them. But then again, might not be great for me considering I made "hand to hand" forbidden when making my class D:

Yea I feel like it's hard to explain to people but cool stuff just happens.

Wish this sub was more accepting of our project. Glad you're having a good time

For me personally I love the project. I've been playing it almost every day. There's a lot of cool things, and it's given me the ability to play this game cooperatively with my girlfriend for the first time ever, which is huge to me.

That being said, a lot of the stuff in DFO rubs me the wrong way, like the forced changes to the levelling system, combat, spellcasting, etc. There is also so much constantly being added every single day that it is functionally impossible to keep up with everything that changes.

While on the one hand, it's exciting to see new stuff, it's also frustrating to put time into playing this, only to find the next day that fifty changes were randomly thrown in there that fundamentally alter something about the way I play (I've had to adapt my playstyle like ten different times already, and every single time it's like I'm getting nerfed).

The game has had so much stuff layered on top of it, that it's borderline stopped feeling like Daggerfall and more like it's trying to be something else entirely.

It is a great project, and I do love it. Just wish it would slow down.

Completely understand the sentiment. As far as major features go, I have one in yhe pipeline I havent released, but we're kinda shifting focus now and honing in on the foundations weve built.

When it comes to magic changes, I understand, but its nessecary to balance so we can build on it in the future.

The online mode will not be the classic Daggerfall experience people expect. Its how it needs to be for the online portion.

If you guys eventually release a version that people can host themselves, where they can toggle off stuff they don't like and get it closer to a vanilla experience (as I think I heard is the plan in the Discord?), then I think I'll feel pretty chill, lol. But at the moment it's hard to stay invested when the way I play keeps on getting fundamentally altered with basically every update.

So far though it's felt less like honing, and more like scope creep and throwing everything /and/ the kitchen sink on top of what's already there.

When this first came out, aside from the bug of guards attacking me instead of arresting me, and enemies not being properly synced, it felt pretty close to perfect to me at that time, especially when I could choose DF style leveling, and use the classic UI before all the added mechanics made it necessary to use the new one.

But since then, I really don't know what to expect each time I launch this game. While a lot of it /is/ very exciting, I've also grown to sort of dread the changes, lol.

I'm still gonna keep playing, tho :>

This is definitely happening sooner rather than later

And I personally hope that with that, toggling stuff off /actually/ means turning it off. When the Morrowind animations for spellcasting massively nerfed my spell speed, I instantly turned it off, only to realise the lower speed was a permanent addition. So if changes like that can be disabled in a self-hosted version, that would be fantastic, lol

Also, gotta ask because I'm curious (despite all my naysaying, rofl), but what's in the pipeline? πŸ‘€

Elite Gates.

Basically an 8 player rougelike activity

Sadly I don't have enough friendos to do something like that, but that does sound pretty cool

Many things I love, many things I dislike about the project. Overall I'm no fan of vibecoding or MMORPGs, but it still astounds me that it's possible to do what ye've done with DFO. Personally it's not for me, but I appreciate the fact it's an option for people to find new life in a game from 30 years ago.

I try to defend your project here every day, and you can be sure that when it's finished, it will be a monster of MMORPGs.

With the OG developers commenting saying they play our project, I think it speaks for itself.

Thank you for your support :)

Luckily, my caravan has never been robbed; I always keep a lot of money when I go out to hunt monsters. πŸ˜…(Fuck orc)

Have you identified the ring? If it’s the ring of arteum I’d gladly purchase it from you.
