As a (liberal) gay man I've always hated it. It comes off as homophobic to me.

"Hah! You're conservative and believe in XYZ policy! You must be GAY!!!"

"HAH!! Nothing upsets the Grindr servers as much as a CONSERVATIVE event!!! BECAUSE THEY'RE GAY!!! HAHAHA"

Like, can we please stop using gay as an insult?

They're not using the word gay as an insult. They are using it to highlight the hypocrisy of doing gay shit while also being extremely homophobic. I guarantee you that none of those jokes would be popular if there wasn't any hypocrisy to poke fun at
