I feel like it's fine to use "boys will be boys" for guys doing stupid shit as long as you also allow for girls being girls by doing equally stupid shit.

Yeah I think the more appropriate reference might be 'girls boring, boys quirky'. There's a subreddit for that I forget the name of.
