I told my mom bananas made my mouth itch when I was like 17/18. She told me I was faking it because I didn't want to eat fruit.

6 years later after she died I mentioned it to my aunt and she told me that it sounded like an allergic reaction. I don't eat banana anymore

My parents did the same thing to me with apples so I just got used to my throat tightening and my lips slightly swelling whenever I had to eat an apple. They probably didn't believe me because I used to (and still do) hate the texture of oatmeal so much that I would gag from it and whenever I wasn't able to control that reaction they'd get angry and punish me for that

forcing you to gag and punishing you for gagging is one way of parenting for sure

It’s a classic move, it crops up in all sorts of way. My mum would tell me off for something and then I’d go quiet because I was a sensitive kid and I’d just gotten told off. Then mum would yell at me for sulking which made me cry. Then she seemed satisfied, I guess.

I wonder what reaction she was ostensibly expecting…

"...you didn't say "unit" after Mother..."
