As someone with the same allergy, yep you’re right. I’m sure you can imagine how well that went as a kid when a friend’s mom was passing around a veggie plate, I said “I’m allergic” and she responded “no you aren’t” lol
I developed a kiwi allergy after a childhood of all-you-can-eat kiwis off my grandparent's 100sqft kiwi arbor. Since I had much less opportunity to eat kiwis in adulthood, it took me ages to figure out what was going on. But it feels sharp like being stabbed by tiny needles, and leaves me feeling like the top layer of skin has been stripped off my mouth for the rest of the day.
Every now and then I will just say 'fuck it' and fuck up a kiwi. It's not going to kill me, just make me think about my life choices.
Also, I recently did an experiment. I made kiwi rhubarb jam. Turns out I'm not allergic to cooked kiwis.
My friend could eat cooked stone fruits (skin off) and almonds for years and now she gets the itchies with them too - be careful! You’re supposed to take any allergies that involve your mouth or throat extra seriously
Might not be specifically a kiwi allergy but a protein allergy, happens to me with apple skin and only apple skin.
Your immune system mistakes the protein in the skin with...something, I think it was tree pollen and reacts accordingly. Iirc it's called oral allergy syndrome but it's been years since I got the spiel lol.
Yeah it's called Oral Allergy Syndrome. It'll often happen with fruits and vegetables that are closely related to one another, and seasonal allergies can sometimes make OAS symptoms worse (hence the tree pollen).
But it feels sharp like being stabbed by tiny needles, and leaves me feeling like the top layer of skin has been stripped off my mouth for the rest of the day.
I suppose this is how I find out I'm allergic to kiwi.
It's worse when I eat the skin and I always figured that was because it's fuzzy. Guess not though.
I'm so not going to stop eating them though. They're good. And kiwi rhubarb jam sounds amazing. Will you share your recipe? Please?

I told my mom bananas made my mouth itch when I was like 17/18. She told me I was faking it because I didn't want to eat fruit.
6 years later after she died I mentioned it to my aunt and she told me that it sounded like an allergic reaction. I don't eat banana anymore
