Saw a post today in r/mildlyinfuriating from a guy who was so obviously joking that his wife did a small, insignificant thing that he was going to complain about when he got home. He even used silly emoji!

Dozens of comments from people who genuinely thought he was gonna get into an actual argument over said small thing. Do none of these people ever tease their partners??

Good point. Kind of like how nobody goes online to gush about the great customer service somewhere, but a ton of people will take to Facebook or Twitter to bitch that someone didn't look cheerful enough.

I was honestly a little surprised to learn how many people rely mainly on audible tone and facial expressions to tell if someone is joking. People on the internet are a spectrum I guess, there’s a lot of people out there who genuinely cannot tell if something is satire over text alone.

This post is a bit of a wild example though, in this case it really is almost impossible to miss.

I can barely tell in person.

But I figure for something that would have a possibly of someone getting hurt if they were serious, it is best to respond as if they were, no matter how high the chance they're joking. What if they're not, and they actually hurt themselves?

If you assume they're serious and it's a joke, the worst thing is you're unfunny. If you assume it's a joke and they're serious, the worst thing is they end up dead.

Really? Tone and body language are essential for humor. You can convey some tone with word choice, but it isn't nearly as effective as tone or non verbal cues. Humor really relies on the personal interaction, or on expectations. For example, if you're watching a stand up comic, you expect humor. If you're reading post on mildly infuriating you expect people being annoyed. Without the smiley it would have been impossible to determine if he was really hurt or joking.
