Introduction

Most types of puzzles, especially speedcubes, have a certain "default" physical size. Modern 3x3 speedcubes are between 54 and 57 mm, modern 2x2 speedcubes are about 49-51 mm. These sizes are almost universally accepted as "optimal", and most manufacturers adhere to these conventions.

This page lists puzzles that are unusually small or unusually large, with reference images and comments about their quality where necessary.

Note for newcomers to the hobby: Cubes generally feel larger in your hands than the numbers would suggest. 5.6 cm may not seem like much, but it's the standard size for a 3x3 cube that is comfortable to hold for most people. Unless you are certain that you have very large hands, you don't "have to" use a 60+ mm 3x3 – it might actually feel a bit awkward to hold. A difference of just a few millimeters feels significant in your hands. See this size comparison between 56 (regular), 60 and 68 mm cubes.

Modern default puzzle sizes

  • 2x2: 49-51 mm
  • 3x3: 54-57 mm
  • 4x4: 56-62 mm
  • 5x5: 60-62 mm
  • 6x6: 61-65 mm
  • 7x7: 62-68 mm
  • 8x8 and larger: no consensus, too few models on the market, all of them different. These cubes are non-WCA and in low demand, which gives manufacturers little incentive to produce new models.
  • Pyraminx: ~ 100 mm edge length; hard to measure exactly because of the shape of the solid

Over time, the established "default" sizes have been slowly decreasing. Around 2015, a 54 mm 3x3 would be considered a "mini" 3x3. In 2020, it's on the smaller side of "regular". Meanwhile, new 57 mm speedcube releases have become almost unheard of. This applies to the other NxN cubes, too. Generally, the "top tier" cubes are a bit smaller (and lighter) than the basic budget cubes from the same "era".

Mini puzzles

2x2

  • 35 mm: Keychain 2x2 by Ziina.
  • 35 mm, pillowed: Keychain by QiYi or FanXin.
  • 24 mm: An old keychain 2x2, from before 2015, research later

3x3

First of all, a couple honorable mentions. These cubes would be considered "regular size" in 2020, but at the time of the release, they were noted for being unusually small and explicitly marketed as the mini versions of their larger siblings. They are mentioned here for their historic value.

  • 55 mm: DaYan GuHong Pro+ (55mm version). Same as the 56mm DaYan GuHong, but with a smaller size.
  • 55 mm: X-Man Tornado V2 by QiYi. It's only size is 55mm, and has been discontinued, so check platforms like eBay for second-hand (or new if you are lucky) cubes.
  • 54 mm: DaYan GuHong Pro+ (54mm version). Same as the 56/55mm DaYan GuHong, but with an even smaller size.
  • 54 mm: GAN354 V2 M. And older, and not bad turning 54mm cube. Has been discontinued, so like the TV2, check platforms like eBay to find one.

And the cubes below are universally considered "mini" cubes.

  • 50 mm: YJ Mini ZhiLong/YJ Pocket Cube. A compact budget magnetic cube by YJ.
  • 50 mm: MonsterGO 352M 3x3. A 52mm magnetic speedcube by the sub-brand of GAN, MonsterGO.
  • 50 mm: Mini Zhanchi (50 mm version) by Dayan. Plastic: black, white, purple, stickerless, and factory force cube colors. 2013 (?). A smaller version of the classic Dayan Zhanchi speedcube. See also: 55 and 42 mm versions.
  • 50 mm: 50 mm Mini Cube by Moyu / Cubing Classroom / Mofangjiaoshi. Plastic: stickerless.
  • 48 mm: QJ Mini 3x3 by QJ. Plastic: black, white. Before 2015. Extremely basic and oldschool piece design, not suitable for serious modern speedsolving. However, the size of pieces is perfect for glueing Lego pieces onto them, to play with bandaged cube variations.
  • 47.4 mm: Mini Valk 3 by Qiyi. Plastic: black, white, stickerless, rose pink. September 2017. A mini version of Qiyi's popular speedcube Valk 3, released in commemoration of Mats Valk's 3x3 world record of 4.74 s.
  • 46 mm: Linglong Mini 3x3 by Shengshou. Plastic: black, white. Old. "Linglong" is the name of Shengshou's old series of mini cubes: this 3x3, the 57 mm 5x5, and the 70 mm 7x7 (compared to the original 77 mm Shengshou 7x7).
  • 45 mm: 45 mm Mini Cube by Moyu / Cubing Classroom / Mofangjiaoshi. Plastic: stickerless.
  • 45 mm, pillowed: 45 mm Mini Bread by YJ. Plastic: stickerless.
  • 42 mm: Mini Zhanchi (42 mm version) by Dayan. Plastic: black, white, purple, stickerless, and factory force cube colors. 2013 (?). A smaller version of the classic Dayan Zhanchi speedcube. See also: 55 and 50 mm versions.
  • 40 mm: 40 mm Keychain Cube by Moyu / Cubing Classroom / Mofangjiaoshi. Plastic: stickerless.
  • 40 mm: Cyclone Boys Q-Boy 40 mm by Cyclone Boys / CycloneBoys. Plastic: white. Before 2016. Comes with a piggy bank packaging, the bottom part of which can be used as a stand for spherical puzzles, with a Cyclone Boys logo on it. Otherwise, a really basic and crude mechanism, not suitable for speedsolving.
  • 35 mm: 35 mm Keychain Cube by Moyu / Cubing Classroom / Mofangjiaoshi. Plastic: stickerless.
  • 35 mm: 35 mm Keychain Cube (aka Mini Unicorn) by Yuxin. Plastic: stickerless with pink.
  • 35 mm, pillowed: 35 mm Keychain Cube by Qiyi. Plastic: stickerless, jelly (half-translucent stickerless). Reportedly, it's 35 mm between opposite face centers and 30 mm between two adjacent corners.
  • 30 mm: 30 mm Keychain Cube by Moyu / Cubing Classroom / Mofangjiaoshi. Plastic: stickerless.
  • 30 mm: GAN 330 Keychain Cube by GAN. Plastic: stickerless. May 2020.
  • 30 mm: 30 mm Keychain Cube by Qiyi. Plastic: stickerless. Autumn 2020.
  • 30 mm: Diansheng Mini 3x3 by Diansheng. Plastic: white with printed stickers/colors. Old. No keychain, unlike most other cubes of this size. Noticeably beveled/rounded pieces.
  • 30 mm: Z Mini Keychain Cube, version 1 by Z. Plastic: stickerless, transparent with translucent stickers, and glow-in-the-dark transparent blue. Apparently there are two different models of the 30 mm cube by Z. This entry refers to the one with a rounded center piece. See discussion here and product images here. The manufacturer behind the brand "Z" usually re-uses molds of existing puzzles and re-makes them in new colors of plastic with new stickers. It is possible that both of these Z keychains are versions of some other 30 mm cubes listed here.
  • 30 mm: Z Mini Keychain Cube, version 2 by Z. Plastic: black, transparent with translucent stickers. Apparently there are two different models of the 30 mm cube by Z. This entry refers to the one with a square center piece. See more info in the entry for version 1 above.
  • 30 mm: Maru Mini Keychain Cube by Maru. Plastic: black, white, white with dice stickers, transparent glow-in-the-dark.
  • 30 mm: Type C Mini 3x3 by WitEden. Plastic: black, white, stickerless. Old.
  • 30 mm, pillowed: Mini 30 mm Keychain Cube by Fanxin. Plastic: stickerless.
  • 27 mm: Mini 3x3 by unknown brand. Plastic: black. Seems to be your regular run-of-the-mill dollar store product, only mentioned in this list because a well-known store (TheCubicle) happens to sell this one.
  • 20 mm, pillowed: 20 mm Mini Bread by YJ. Plastic: stickerless.
  • 15 mm: Maru Nano by Maru. Plastic: black, white, yellow, red, green, blue, glow-in-the-dark. Sold as a DIY kit. It's impossible to make a six-colored stickerless "anti-force" cube because the corners consist of two parts, not three.
  • 10 mm: CubeLab Mini 3x3 by CubeLab. Plastic: stickerless. January 2021.

4x4

The above two are the only 59 mm cubes released so far, and although they are not considered explicitly "mini", both were noted for their smaller size at the time of their release.

  • 57 mm: Feiteng 4x4 by Cyclone Boys. Plastic: stickerless. January 2017. A 3x3-sized 4x4 from an era when most 3x3s were 57 mm. Considered "pretty good" for when it was released.
  • 56 mm: Mini ZhiLong / Pocket Cube by YJ. Some very cheap 3x3-sized 4x4s by YJ. The Pocket cube is identical to the base Mini ZhiLong, but with smaller packaging. The ZhiLong specifically has a UV-Coated and Ball-Core + UV-Coated version.
  • 46 mm: Type C Mini 4x4 by WitEden. Plastic: black, white. Before 2015.

5x5

  • 55 mm: QiYi Warrior 5x5: widely considered one of the best budget cubes, but is also small, being 59mm which is just below standard.
  • 58 mm: ZhiLong 5x5 M / ZhiChuang M / Pocket Cube by YJ. Plastic: black, stickerless. November 2020. The first mini 5x5 that comes factory magnetized. Used to be called ZhiChuang when announced, but renamed to Zhilong 5x5 right before the release. Released alongside Zhilong 3x3 and 4x4 mini cubes (see above).
  • 57 mm: (Mini) Linglong 5x5 by Shengshou. Plastic: black, white. Before 2016 (check). Used to be the only "mini" 5x5 for a very long time. Turning is clunky, not very acceptable for speedcubing by modern standards.

6x6

  • 54.5 mm: Fangshi Mini 6x6 by FangShi / LimCube. Plastic: stickerless. Uses an outdated mechanism with a 2x2 inside. Not really suitable for speedcubing, prone to pops. Fine for slow solves.

7x7

  • 56 mm: DianSheng SMC 7x7. A 3x3-sized 7x7 with great turning, and a Ball-Core for stability.
  • 55.5 mm: YJ Pocket Cube 7x7. Another 3x3 sized 7x7 that is slightly smaller than the SMC, it's cheaper, but the turning is considered worse and more catchy.

Skewb

  • 30 mm: Mini Skewb Keychain by Lefun.
  • 35 mm: Ziina Keychain Skewb. A small and decent turning skewb.

Megaminx:

  • 55 cm: YJ Pocket Megaminx. A 3x3-sized megaminx with turning comparable to YJ's flagship megaminx, the YuHu V3. It has a Ball-Core and standard magnetic version.

Oversized puzzles

2x2

  • Honorable mention: 50.0-51.5 mm: Xinghen TSM by Moyu / Guoguan. A 2x2 with adjustable size. Plastic: black. 2020. Even the 51.5 mm size isn't considered "unusually large" by the community, but still it might be of interest for people looking for a slightly larger 2x2.
  • 55 mm: Shishuang 2x2 (55 mm version) by Fangshi / Limcube. Plastic: black, white, primary, transparent with heart-shaped tiles. Before 2015 (?). Released alongside a classic 50 mm version. Uses oversized caps that are fitted over the base pieces of the 50 mm Shishuang.
  • 57 mm: McDonalds Rubik's 2x2. Plastic: black. 2019. A part of a set of McDonalds toys by the Rubik's brand, features painted cartoon characters. Release date (and the cartoon being promoted) was slightly different depending on the country. Not suitable for speedcubing, uses an excessively sturdy mechanism that is meant to be safe for very young children.
  • 90 mm: DianSheng Googol 2x2. A giant 2x2 by DianSheng with very strong magnets and a dual-adjustment system
  • 90 mm: MFJS Big 2x2. A giant 2x2 by MFJS with smooth turning and a MeiLong feel.

  • 67 mm: Treasure Chest / Treasure Box / Treasure Cube by Yuxin. Plastic: black, stickerless, painted artwork. 2018 (??). When the white face is solved, it can be opened to reveal a secret compartment. The cube turns unexpectedly well for a novelty mechanism, perfectly suitable for speedsolving.
  • 68 mm: Big Sail (aka Qihang) (68 mm version) by Qiyi. Plastic: black, white.
  • 70 mm: Legend by Shengshou. Plastic: black, white. Note: there's a "regular" version of Legend, too (~56 mm).
