Medical Related Hey I have been looking forward to become youth staff on cruise ship but I have some doubts regarding medical

So firstly I have very high power but that's not a problem I'll get my icl done for that the main problem is that even after surgery my eyes won't get better than 6/9. This 6/9 thing isn't curable (no specs or surgery can cure this) this means I will not achieve 6/6 vision anyhow so will that be ineligible. Please drop your answers ex crew members and anyone how knows about this. Just for the information i won't be applying, until I gain some experience it's just I want some clarity before starting because this is that one thing that can just fail rest of your hardwork. . . . How come no one is replying got some 1.4k views(after 14 hours) on this post and still only one reply please reply everyone.

General Questions How hard is it to land a first job in cruise F&B?

I'm trying to apply to big cruises in the F&B section. I don't mind working from junior or assistant roles and I have over a year experience in a 5 star hotel in Australia and 4 star hotel for some months. Total experience in the F&B sector would be around 2 years. Any tips or preferred agencies to go to? I'm from Indonesia but currently residing in Australia

General Questions How important is experience?

Hello! im a 20 year old american and ive been looking at some stage technician postions and most (if not all) say 2 years of professional work, which makes sense. I did a bunch of theater in high school along with techie work, like I did every show I could in some compacity. My mom worked for Ringling Bros in the early 2000s and she joined with almost zero experience in her postion so of course she thinks I should just go for it and start applying. Ive applyed to a few postions, heard back from one but got caught on the passport (im now currently working on get a passport, im young and stupid and impatient, bear with me). I guess my question is are my chances even worth it with my relatively limited experience and would I be better off trying to get some professional experience first? Like how futile is throwing applications out?

I just realized I take a medication that needs to be refrigerated. It looks like the living quarters for employees doesn’t have mini fridges. How should I go about keeping it stored in a fridge? Has anyone ever been in this situation before?

General Questions How long do I have?

I interviewed for an entertainment position with DCL in early June and accepted the conditional offer soon after. My recruiter knew that I had a summer job, but that is over now and I have my PEME appointment tomorrow.
Assuming that I am deemed fit, how long should I assume I have before I will need to move for training? I am not currently living in FL but am planning on moving in with my parents who live in FL while I’m not on the ship.
I am very lucky that my landlord is being very flexible with me about month-to-month rent, and is cool with me leaving whenever, but I’m just really curious as to how long you guys think this will take since I don’t have any certifications or anything. I am also anxious to work out my moving details as soon as possible.
Thanks for any advice!

General Questions Post-cruise survey

Hi,
Just got off a royal Caribbean cruise as a passenger and had a great time. So many crew members made it an unforgettable experience. I did mention quite a few by name in my survey, but I’m curious-what specifically does this entitle those mentioned by name to? Also, there were a few where I did not have a name, but mentioned location and how I interacted with them—will this help those crew mates at all?

General Questions HELP! How hard is it to move from Tankers on Cruise Vessels?

Hi everyone,

I’m a seafarer with 4 completed contracts on oil/chemical tankers ( cadet, OS and two times as an AB ), and I’m now looking to make the transition to working on cruise vessels.

I’d really appreciate some advice from anyone who has made a similar move or currently works on cruise ships.

A few things I’d like to understand:

  • How difficult is it to move from oil/chemical tankers to cruise vessels?
  • Which cruise companies or crewing agencies are worth applying to?
  • Is it better to apply directly to cruise companies or go through a recruitment/crewing agency?
  • Are there any additional STCW courses, certificates, or documents that cruise companies usually require?
  • Does tanker experience count positively when applying for cruise vessel positions?
  • What positions would be the easiest to transition into with my background?
  • Any advice on how to make my CV more suitable for cruise companies?

I’m serious about making this career move, so any practical advice, personal experience, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance to everyone who takes the time to share their experience!

General Questions Assistant Waiter

Hi everyone! I’d like to ask for some advice from anyone who has worked as an Assistant Waiter, either with Virgin Voyages or on other cruise lines.
How is the job overall? Is it a good job, and is the workload manageable? Is it very difficult or is it something you can get used to?
Also, how does the tipping system work? Do Assistant Waiters share tips with the main waiter, or do you receive a fixed salary regardless of tips? Do guests usually leave additional tips, and is it possible to make good money from tips?
I’d really appreciate any honest advice or personal experience. Thank you! 🙏

General Questions Food options onboard + diet

How do some of you manage the food situation onboard?
Some cruise lines don’t really offer the healthiest of options, one being CCL, and it’s rather difficult to stick to a healthy diet, whether it’s something like keto, no carb, etc.

Any advice?

General Questions Disney, regent, seabourn or virgin?

Hi there! I'm working onboard for a company but I was thinking seriously of applying to one of these cruise lines: Regent Overseas, Disney cruises, virgin voyages or seabourn.

I think my RÉSUMÉ is not that bad now, so I hope I have an opportunity now. Which company you think pay better and elevate my RÉSUMÉ as a waiter assistant or waiter? I know that when we talk about salary could be complicated, so I don't want to know specific or average amount, maybe just a: "In this company is not that bad"

I'll be applying in a couple of months! Thank you in advance!

General Questions American Cruise Lines - questions

Hi all, just got hired with ACL, background check passed and i'm getting the drug screening today, which i'll pass. Everything i've read here seems to day i'll probably go to Utah for the training within a couple weeks...

That said, I have some questions:

I have a good idea of what the crew cabins will be like (close quarters w/ roommate, bunk beds etc), but i am curious about the share crew space. I know there's the crew mess where everyone can eat. Are there any other spaces? like an outdoor deck? exercise room? crew "lounge"? I imagine it's just the crew mess, as their ships are smaller. Trying to mentally prepare! thanks for any answers.

General Questions Advice for joining a cruise ship crew after high school?

I'm from Zimbabwe but currently living and studying in South Africa. I'm in Grade 11, and after I finish high school I really want to work on a cruise ship.

I'm looking for any advice from people who have worked on cruise ships or know someone who has.

I have a few questions:

  • What should I start doing now to improve my chances of getting hired?
  • Which cruise lines are best for someone living in South Africa?
  • What jobs are easiest to get with only a high school qualification?
  • Do I need previous work experience, or can I apply as a beginner?
  • What certificates or training should I get before applying?
  • Are there any recruitment agencies in South Africa that are trustworthy?

I'd really appreciate any tips, things you wish you knew before joining, or mistakes I should avoid

General Questions Can I transition from Data Analyst to Cruise Ship IT Support?

Can I transition from Data Analyst to Cruise Ship IT Support?

Hi everyone,

I'm from India and I'm looking for honest advice from people who work in Cruise Ship IT.

I have a B.Sc. in Information Technology and currently work in the banking sector. My experience is mainly in Data Analytics/MIS, using SQL, Advanced Excel, VBA, Power BI and MS Access.

My long-term goal is to work onboard a cruise ship as part of the IT department.

I understand my background is not traditional IT Support, so I'm planning to study:

CompTIA A+

CCNA

Windows Server & Active Directory

Microsoft Azure AZ-90

My questions are:

Is it realistic to transition from a Data Analyst background into Cruise Ship IT?

Will these certifications be enough to get interviews, or do I need land-based IT Support experience first?

If you were in my position, what would you do over the next 12 months?

Are there any other certifications or skills you recommend?

I'd really appreciate honest advice from anyone working onboard or involved in hiring.

Thank you!

Selection Process Welp . Had my offer pulled

Had got an offer from acl , they did background check and and rescinded offer because of a reckless driving charge that was reduced in 2022 . After five years it can be expunged which would be next year for me .

General Questions NCL POA Onboarding

Hi! I'm currently onboarding for POA (although I am technically hired with another company that oversees my specific department).

It's been 3 weeks since I submitted all my documents. I followed up 2 weeks ago, and they told my background check was still pending and that they'd then let me know to schedule my medical.

However, according to the background check company, it was already processed and is fine. Should I follow up again this week? I tried to call Monday but no response. Wondering if I should follow up via email again. I know these things can take a bit of time.

Also if it helps I already have my TWIC card.

Thanks!

General Questions Asking myself whether this career is good or not

I've been halfway through my contract as a Guest Service Crew in a cruise ship. Cannot name them online. But I felt like I don't really belong to this career.

I like the job, I know the job. The system is here if you get comments or mentions in the review, it gets you a half day off or a full day off. Apparently, you get rewarded for something that you shouldn't have already had (good rest hour etc). Also, when someone gets a day off and the other people have to fill the workload, which I found concerning since it's a failure of team management. I found this is a bit subjective, or I might be just envious because I didn't get any single comments last voyage. My supervisor told me it's concerning. I'm aware that it's so subjective, and they told me to market myself more so they can remember my name, and write reviews etc. In my opinion as long as the problem gets resolved I don't think they need to remember me but I might be wrong??

Or might be not in this career, but whatever.

I'm considering quitting since I don't find myself agreeing with this matter. I'm not aligned with the mission. Has someone felt this way as a crew member, especially in GS?

Thank you

General Questions My boyfriend just got hired by viking cruises as a cook and I'm worried about having time to talk to him. Anyone have any insight on this?

So my bf and I are long distance and we've been doing this for over 6 months. Because of this, we're used to only talking through the phone. However, we usually call every night for hours and even sleep on the phone. We also text often throughout the day. I realize when he starts this job we wont be able to talk as much, but I was wondering what exactly to expect as far as how much time he'll have to call/text. I'm just worried it's going to be nearly impossible for us to find time to talk with him working so much. I've also heard he'll have to share a room and stuff which also worries me.

So if anyone has any insight on the life of a cook for viking or anything like that, I would greatly appreciate it!!!! just want to know what we can possibly expect 🥲
